The Serengeti plains β€” Tanzania's great wilderness, where the Great Migration unfolds for nine months of the year

Safari Destination Comparison

Serengeti vs Masai Mara

Two parks, one ecosystem. The honest comparison β€” from an operator who has spent 48 years in Tanzania's bush.

The Same Ecosystem, Different Countries

The Serengeti and Masai Mara are technically one ecosystem β€” the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem β€” divided by the Tanzania-Kenya border. The wildebeest migrate between them following the rains, spending nine months in Tanzania's Serengeti and three months in Kenya's Masai Mara. But the experience of visiting each is meaningfully different: in scale, in crowd levels, in cost, and in how they combine with a Kilimanjaro climb. Here is the honest comparison.

Serengeti vs Masai Mara β€” Side by Side

FactorSerengeti (Tanzania)Masai Mara (Kenya)

The Factor That Decides It β€” If You Are Climbing Kilimanjaro Too

If your trip includes climbing Kilimanjaro as well as a safari, the choice between Serengeti and Masai Mara is effectively made for you: the Serengeti every time. A Kilimanjaro climb departs from Arusha in northern Tanzania. The Serengeti is a 4–5 hour drive or a short flight from Arusha. Your safari can begin the day after you descend from the mountain. There is no border crossing, no international flight, no currency exchange, no change of operator. One company runs your entire trip.

The Masai Mara requires crossing into Kenya β€” a flight to Nairobi or a long drive to the border, then another transit into Kenya and a separate safari operator. For the same ecosystem and essentially the same wildlife experience, this added complexity is hard to justify. The Serengeti delivers the Mara-Serengeti experience without any of the cross-border friction.

Which Park in Which Month

January – MarchSerengeti only. Calving season in the southern Serengeti (Ndutu). This is exclusively in Tanzania β€” not accessible from Kenya.
April – MayEither park. Green season. Fewer tourists, lower prices, excellent photography. The Serengeti is lush and empty. The Mara is quiet.
JuneSerengeti. Wildebeest begin moving north from the southern Serengeti. Northern Serengeti is spectacular and very few tourists.
July – OctoberEither park β€” this is peak season for both. The migration crosses the Mara River in the Masai Mara (Kenya) and the Grumeti River in the western Serengeti (Tanzania). Both offer extraordinary wildlife viewing. The Serengeti is less crowded per square kilometre.
NovemberEither park. Short rains begin. The migration starts returning south from Kenya to Tanzania. Green season starts, prices drop.
DecemberSerengeti. The migration is back in the southern Serengeti for calving season. Festive season means higher prices and more visitors.

Serengeti vs Masai Mara β€” FAQ

Which is better β€” Serengeti or Masai Mara?

For first-time safari travellers and those focused on the Great Migration, the Serengeti is the stronger choice. It is larger, less crowded, and hosts the migration for nine months of the year. The Masai Mara is excellent β€” particularly for photography and river crossings β€” but it is smaller, more expensive, and gets significantly more crowded in peak season. The Serengeti gives you more space, more wildlife variety, and better value for money.

What is the difference between the Serengeti and Masai Mara?

The Serengeti is in Tanzania; the Masai Mara is in Kenya. Geographically, they are part of the same ecosystem β€” the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem β€” separated only by a border. The wildebeest migrate between the two, spending roughly nine months in the Serengeti (Tanzania) and three months in the Masai Mara (Kenya). Beyond the border, the differences are in park management, crowd levels, cost, and the type of experience each offers.

Can I see the Great Migration in both the Serengeti and Masai Mara?

You can, but it requires crossing the Tanzania-Kenya border, which adds complexity and cost. The migration passes through the Masai Mara from approximately July to October, when the wildebeest cross from the Serengeti into the Mara and then back again. If seeing the full migration β€” including the calving season in the southern Serengeti from January to March β€” is your goal, stay in Tanzania. The southern Serengeti calving is entirely in Tanzania and is not accessible from Kenya.

Which park is less crowded β€” Serengeti or Masai Mara?

The Serengeti is significantly less crowded per square kilometre. The Mara-Serengeti ecosystem is roughly 30,000 square kilometres in total, but the Serengeti (Tanzania) portion is about 14,750 square kilometres while the Masai Mara (Kenya) is only about 1,500 square kilometres. During peak season (August to October), the Mara fills with vehicles at river crossings. The Serengeti, with its vast space, disperses visitors more effectively β€” though the Ndutu area in the south does get busy during calving season (January to March).

Is the Masai Mara more expensive than the Serengeti?

Yes, the Masai Mara is generally more expensive than comparable options in the Serengeti. The Mara commands premium pricing because of its reputation, its small size (which creates scarcity), and the high demand from luxury safari operators. Serengeti accommodation ranges from budget camping to ultra-luxury lodges, giving you more flexibility. Park fees in both are similar, but the Mara's lodge and camp pricing tends to be 20–40% higher than equivalent properties in the Serengeti during peak season.

Which park is better for combining with a Kilimanjaro climb?

Unquestionably the Serengeti. A Kilimanjaro climb departs from Arusha in northern Tanzania, and the Serengeti is a 4–5 hour drive from Arusha (or a short flight to Seronera or Kogatende). There is no border crossing, no currency exchange, no change of operator. You descend from Kilimanjaro, rest in Arusha, and drive into the Serengeti the next morning. Combining the Mara with a Kilimanjaro climb requires a domestic flight from Arusha to Nairobi and a cross-border transit β€” possible, but unnecessarily complex for the same ecosystem.

What wildlife will I see in each park?

Both parks offer exceptional wildlife viewing. The Serengeti has a slight edge in predator populations β€” particularly lion and cheetah β€” and is one of the best places on earth to see the Big Five. The Mara is famous for its large lion prides and dramatic river crossings. Elephant, buffalo, giraffe, and zebra are abundant in both. The key difference: the Serengeti's scale means you can experience genuine wilderness and see wildlife far from other vehicles. The Mara, being smaller, offers more concentrated sightings but with more vehicles present.

Which is better for photography β€” Serengeti or Masai Mara?

The Masai Mara has a reputation for exceptional photography, particularly of river crossings and predator action. The smaller park means wildlife is more concentrated and predictable. The Serengeti offers greater variety β€” open grasslands, rocky outcrops, riverine forests, and the vast golden horizon that defines the African savannah. For landscape photography, the Serengeti is unmatched. For action photography at river crossings, the Mara is spectacular. Either park will deliver extraordinary images β€” your choice depends on what you want to photograph.
