10-Day Tanzania Itinerary

10 Days in Tanzania โ€”
Summit and Safari

A complete day-by-day guide to 10 days in Tanzania: 7 days climbing Kilimanjaro via the Machame Route, followed by 2 days in Tarangire and Ngorongoro Crater.

Ten days is the sweet spot for Tanzania. Enough for the summit. Enough for the safari. Enough to do it properly.

A 10-day Tanzania itinerary is the most requested combination for one reason: it works. Seven days on the Machame Route gives your body the acclimatisation it needs for a realistic summit attempt. Two days on safari โ€” Tarangire and Ngorongoro Crater โ€” delivers the wildlife spectacle that makes Tanzania famous. This is the itinerary Safari Kilimanjaro has refined over 46 years of operation.

Day by Day

The 10-day itinerary โ€” hour by hour

1Afternoon/Evening

Arrive in Tanzania โ€” Kilimanjaro Airport to Arusha

Most international flights land at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) in the mid-afternoon. Safari Kilimanjaro meets you in arrivals with a private transfer to Arusha โ€” 60-90 minutes through the Rift Valley. Evening: gear check and climb briefing with your lead guide at the hotel. Overnight at an Arusha lodge. No acclimatisation happens on day one โ€” you rest.

25-6 hours trekking

Machame Gate to Machame Camp (3,000m)

After a final briefing and breakfast, you transfer to the Machame Gate (1,800m). The trek begins immediately through dense rainforest โ€” the path is well-marked but steep. By late afternoon you emerge at Machame Camp (3,000m), where your first camp sits on the edge of the moorland zone. Most people feel the altitude here โ€” breathlessness on steep sections, slightly heavier sleep. This is normal.

34-5 hours trekking

Machame Camp to Shira Camp (3,840m)

A shorter day in distance but significant in altitude gain. You cross the Shira Plateau โ€” a vast, moon-like landscape at 3,500m+ with views of Kibo Peak that become more dramatic by the hour. The air is noticeably thinner. Conversation pace slows. Your guide will emphasise slow movement and high water intake. Shira Camp has outstanding views of the mountain, particularly at sunset when the Western Breach glows orange.

47-8 hours trekking

Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp (3,960m)

Today is the most important acclimatisation day of the Machame route. You climb to Lava Tower (4,630m) โ€” the highest point of the route before the summit attempt โ€” then descend to Barranco Camp (3,960m). Climbing high and sleeping low on this day is what makes the Machame route significantly safer than faster alternatives. The Barranco Wall looms ahead, the most dramatic geographical feature of the climb.

54-5 hours trekking

Barranco Wall to Karanga Camp (4,035m)

The Barranco Wall is the climb's most photographed section โ€” a near-vertical scramble of approximately 300 metres that looks far more intimidating than it is. No ropes are needed; your guide's hand is always available. After cresting the wall, you traverse across valleys and ridgelines to Karanga Camp. Afternoon at Karanga is rest, food, and hydration. Tomorrow is the last camp before summit base.

63-4 hours trekking

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,673m)

A short but steep push to Barafu Camp โ€” summit base at 4,673m. The terrain is alpine desert: rocky, exposed, with almost no vegetation. The air at Barafu contains approximately 40% less oxygen than at sea level. Everything slows. Your guides will brief you thoroughly on summit night protocols: layered clothing, headlamp, pacing, what to eat, what to do if you feel unwell. Early dinner and sleep by 19:00. You will wake at 23:00.

712-16 hours total

Summit Night to Mweka Camp (3,100m)

Midnight departure. You climb in darkness with headlamps creating a chain of lights up the mountain. Stella Point (5,756m) is reached at or before sunrise โ€” the crater rim with Kibo's glaciers illuminated in the first light. From Stella Point, 1-2 hours along the crater rim brings you to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) โ€” the roof of Africa. The descent from the summit to Mweka Camp is 8-10 hours. By the time you reach camp, you will have been moving for 12-16 hours. You have summited. Now the real reward begins.

83 hours descent + transfer

Mweka Gate to Arusha (Recovery Day)

Short final descent to Mweka Gate (1,640m). Certificates presented. Private transfer to Arusha. Hot shower. Real bed. Your guide takes you to a restaurant in Arusha for a proper celebratory dinner. This is the most underrated night of any climb โ€” the pride, the relief, the shared accomplishment in the group. You sleep at 1,400m altitude tonight. Your body begins the recovery it desperately needs.

9Full day game drive

Safari: Tarangire National Park

After breakfast, your safari guide meets you at the hotel. You depart for Tarangire National Park โ€” the park that most safari visitors underrate. Tarangire in the dry season (June-October) has the highest elephant concentration in Tanzania, with herds of 200-300 gathering near the Tarangire River. Baobab forests, tree-climbing lions, and some of the best predator action in northern Tanzania. The park is quieter than the Serengeti and has a wild, exploratory feel that many experienced safari-goers prefer.

10Full day + transfer

Safari: Ngorongoro Crater to Kilimanjaro Airport

Dawn departure for Ngorongoro Crater โ€” the world's largest intact caldera and Tanzania's most reliable wildlife viewing area. In 6-8 hours on the crater floor you will almost certainly see all members of the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and the rare black rhino. The concentration of animals in this 264kmยฒ caldera is extraordinary โ€” density you simply cannot find anywhere else in Africa outside of a vehicle. Afternoon transfer to Kilimanjaro Airport (approximately 3 hours from Ngorongoro). Departure or onward connection.

Questions

10-Day Tanzania FAQ

Is 10 days enough for Kilimanjaro and a safari?

Yes โ€” and it is the most popular combination for a reason. Ten days gives you seven days on the mountain (Machame route) with a proper acclimatisation day, followed by two full safari days. You will see the Big Five, reach the summit, and return home without rushing. The critical factor is itinerary design: avoid back-to-back travel days without rest, and ensure your descent from the mountain gives you at least one night at Arusha altitude before the safari starts.

What is the summit success rate on a 10-day Machame + Safari itinerary?

Approximately 88-92% for the Machame route on a 7-day ascent. The key variable is the Lava Tower day โ€” climbers who take this day seriously and hydrate adequately perform significantly better on summit night. Safari Kilimanjaro' 10-day Machame summit rate for 2025 was 91%.

Why Tarangire and Ngorongoro and not the Serengeti?

On a 10-day itinerary, you have time for approximately 2 safari days before fatigue and onward travel logistics become factors. Tarangire and Ngorongoro are the two best parks for a short safari: Tarangire for elephants and dramatic landscapes, Ngorongoro for the highest wildlife density and Big Five probability. You will not feel short-changed by skipping the Serengeti on 10 days.

What is the physical fitness requirement for a 10-day combo?

No technical climbing experience is needed. The requirement is cardiovascular fitness and mental resilience. You should be comfortable hiking 6-8 hours in a day with a 10-15kg backpack. Preparation should start 3-4 months before the trip with stair climbing, hiking, and aerobic exercise.

Can I add Zanzibar to a 10-day itinerary?

Technically yes, but it compresses the safari. A Zanzibar add-on would replace the second safari day โ€” instead of Tarangire + Ngorongoro, you would do one park, then fly to Zanzibar on the afternoon of Day 9. If you want both Zanzibar and a proper 2-park safari, you need 14 days minimum.

What is the best time of year for a 10-day combo?

January-February and June-October are the strongest windows. January-February offers the clearest Kili conditions, short crowds, and Ngorongoro's best game viewing. June-October adds the Great Migration in the northern Serengeti. March-May is the green season โ€” lower prices but challenging mountain conditions. December has peak pricing but exceptional conditions.
