This is the minimum viable itinerary. Five days is the shortest possible Kili + Safari combination. The 4-day Marangu has a lower summit success rate (approximately 60-65%) than longer routes. We only recommend this if you are a strong hiker, have no schedule flexibility, and understand the trade-off. If you can add even one more day, the 7-day Machame + Safari is substantially more reliable.
The shortest path from summit to safari
Five days is the absolute minimum for a Kilimanjaro climb combined with a Tanzania safari. The Marangu route is the only way to achieve it — four days on the mountain, then a rapid descent followed by an afternoon game drive in Ngorongoro Crater before evening departures from Arusha.
Ngorongoro Crater at 2pm to 6pm is still exceptional — the afternoon is when the big cats are most active, elephants move to the water, and the flamingos are most vivid against the shallow soda lake. You will see more wildlife in four hours on the crater floor than in two full days in most other parks.

Day 4 — Summit Night and Return to Horombo
Depart Kibo Hut between 23:00 and 01:00. The ascent to the summit takes 7-9 hours via Gilman's Point (5,685m) and then along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). The temperature at the summit at dawn is typically -10C to -20C. You reach the summit as the sun rises over the Serengeti 5,000m below. The descent to Horombo takes 7-9 hours.
