Common Questions
Choosing the right combo
What is the best Kilimanjaro + Safari combo for first-timers?
The 10-day Machame + Ngorongoro is the best first-timer option. The Machame route is the most popular in Tanzania, our guides know it intimately, and the 7-day itinerary includes a proper acclimatization day at Lava Tower. Combined with a 2-day Ngorongoro Crater safari, it covers the two signature Tanzania experiences without being overwhelming.
How do I choose between the Machame and Lemosho routes?
Choose Machame if you want the classic experience with good acclimatization at a lower price. Choose Lemosho if you want the highest summit success rate (~95%), more remote scenery, and are willing to pay a premium for 8 days on the mountain. Lemosho approaches from the west, giving you different views and a more gradual altitude gain. Both are tented routes.
Is a 3-day safari long enough after Kilimanjaro?
For most climbers, 2 full safari days is the minimum to feel the contrast between the mountain and the bush. The 3-day express combo visits Ngorongoro Crater (half day) and Tarangire (full day) — enough to see the Big Five and understand what Tanzania safari offers. If wildlife viewing is a priority over the climb, consider a 4+ day safari.
Can I do a safari-only trip without the Kilimanjaro climb?
Yes — our safari-only packages start from $1,456 per person for 3 days covering Ngorongoro and Tarangire. Safari-only trips skip the mountain logistics and can be shorter or more focused on specific wildlife interests (photography, birding, Great Migration). See our full safari-only options at /safari-tanzania-only/.
What is the price difference between 10-day and 14-day combos?
The 10-day Machame combo starts at $3,952 per person. The 14-day Lemosho combo starts at $5,096 — a $1,144 difference that covers: one extra climb day (better acclimatization, higher summit rate), one extra safari day in the Serengeti, and upgraded accommodation at luxury tented camps. The per-day cost actually works out slightly cheaper on the 14-day ($364/day vs $395/day).
Which combo is best for seeing the Great Migration?
To see the Great Migration crossings (July–October), you need at least 4 safari days in the northern Serengeti. The 14-day Lemosho + Northern Circuit Safari (4 days in Serengeti) is purpose-built for this. The 10-day combo covers Ngorongoro and Tarangire which have resident wildlife but not the migration crossings. Book migration-focused trips at least 4 months ahead — peak season fills up.
What is the single biggest factor in choosing a combo duration?
Your fitness and altitude adaptation matter more than duration. A well-paced 7-day Machame has a higher success rate than a rushed 6-day climb. For the safari portion, more days = more parks and species diversity. The 14-day is the sweet spot: high summit success, meaningful safari time, and enough flexibility to adjust for weather or wildlife sightings.
Why do some operators quote much lower prices for the same itinerary?
Price differences between operators for similar itineraries come down to: crew wages (ethically employed operators pay fair wages), group size (budget operators pack 15-20 climbers per guide), accommodation tier (budget operators use the cheapest camps), and safari vehicle (shared minibus vs private Land Cruiser). The cheapest quote often excludes park fees, transfers, or tips that are included in our packages. Always ask for an itemized breakdown.
