Best Time to Trek Kilimanjaro
The ideal climbing windows β and why they matter
July β August
Peak climbing season
The dry season is in full swing. Clear skies, firm trails, and the highest summit success rates of the year β 90-95% on routes like Machame and Northern Circuit. This is when the mountain is at its most spectacular: views from the crater rim are unobstructed, and the summit night sky is typically crystal clear.
September β October
Sweet spot for trekking
The long dry season ends, crowds thin out, and conditions remain excellent. September in particular delivers everything: 88-92% summit success, wildlife still concentrated in the Serengeti from migration, and lodge availability opens up. October can bring early short rains in the highlands β the mountain is still very climbable.
January β February
Best for first-time trekkers
The short dry season offers dry, clear conditions and good summit success rates (85-90%). Crowds are moderate. January brings Ndutu calving β a wildlife spectacle on the safari side. February is our most underrated month: great weather, excellent conditions, and significantly less crowded than July-August on the mountain.
Avoid March through mid-May for climbing β the long rains make trails slippery and success rates drop to 65-75%.

Common Questions
Frequently asked about timing
What is the best time to trek Kilimanjaro?
The best time to trek Kilimanjaro is during the dry seasons: June through October and January through February. July and August offer the highest summit success rates (90-95%) with the clearest skies. September gives you the ideal balance of great conditions and fewer crowds. Avoid March through mid-May when the long rains make trails slippery and reduce success rates to 65-75%. See our route-by-route success rate breakdown.
Can I climb Kilimanjaro during the rainy season?
Technically yes β the mountain never closes. But the long rains (March-May) make trails slippery, visibility poor, and success rates drop to 65-75%. November short rains are gentler and the mountain is quieter. If your dates fall in shoulder seasons, talk to us β we can often find good climbing windows even in 'off' months.
What is the Great Migration and when can I see it?
The Great Migration is the world's largest movement of land animals β 1.5 million wildebeest plus zebras and gazelles following seasonal rain across the Serengeti and Maasai Mara. River crossings (the most dramatic events) happen in the northern Serengeti from July to October. Calving season is in Ndutu (southern Serengeti) from January to March. We can build your combo around migration timing. See our Great Migration + Kilimanjaro guide for the full breakdown.
Is it safe to do a safari immediately after climbing Kilimanjaro?
Most climbers are ready for game drives the day after descending. You'll spend the first post-climb day resting in Arusha β a proper hot shower, a good meal, and eight hours of sleep work wonders. By Day 2 most people feel normal. Our itineraries always include at least one rest day before the safari starts in earnest. If you're concerned about fitness, let us know β we can adjust the pace. See our full guide to safari after Kilimanjaro.
How far is the safari from Kilimanjaro?
Your safari vehicle will collect you from Arusha, a 45-minute drive from Kilimanjaro Airport. The Serengeti is a 4-5 hour drive from Arusha (or a 90-minute light aircraft flight). Ngorongoro Crater is 3 hours away. Tarangire is 2 hours. Lake Manyara is also within easy reach. All major safari parks are comfortable driving distances from Kili base β no need for longhaul travel between experiences.
What's the minimum number of days needed for a combo?
A minimum viable combo is 10 days: 7 days on the mountain (Machame route) + 2 days of safari + 1 rest day. At this duration you're moving efficiently. Our 10-day Machame + Ngorongoro & Tarangire combo hits this sweet spot. For the full experience including the Serengeti properly, we recommend 14 days minimum.
