Both options are included in relevant packages; the flight option simply compresses the transfer time.

We monitor all incoming flights to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) in real time. If your flight arrives after midnight, we meet you regardless — our Arusha team is on call 24 hours. If your international flight is delayed by 24 hours or more and affects your climb start date, we adjust your itinerary at no cost. For minor delays (a few hours), we shift your Day 1 Arusha rest day accordingly and the climb begins the following morning. The only scenario where a delay causes a problem is if it compresses your total trip days below what the itinerary requires — we will tell you honestly if this is the case before you book.

What happens if I get injured on the mountain?

Our guides carry a full trauma first-aid kit, pulse oximeters, emergency oxygen, and a Gamow bag for treating severe altitude sickness. For injuries above 4,000m that prevent safe walking, our emergency protocol includes: emergency oxygen delivery, guided descent with stretcher support if required, and evacuation by mountain rescue vehicle from the nearest reachable road. If hospitalisation is needed, we transfer you to St. Francis Hospital in Arusha. For severe cases requiring repatriation, your travel insurance emergency evacuation cover is activated — this is why insurance with helicopter rescue coverage is mandatory. In 48 years, we have never had a client fatality on the mountain.

Is there Wi-Fi on the mountain or during safari?

There is no Wi-Fi on the mountain. The higher camps (Kibo, Kosovo, Arrow Glacier) have no mobile signal at all. Lower camps (Barranco, Karanga, Shira) sometimes get faint Tigo or Vodacom signal. Do not plan to work remotely during the climb — this is not a criticism of your commitment, it is a practical reality. On safari: most permanent camps and lodges have Wi-Fi, though connections are slower than urban broadband (typically 1–3 Mbps). Mobile data (Tigo, Vodacom) works in most safari parks. If staying connected is important to you, let us know and we can suggest lodges with the best connectivity.

What dietary requirements can be accommodated on the mountain?

We can accommodate most dietary requirements with advance notice. On the mountain: our cook prepares separate vegetarian, vegan, halal, gluten-free, and lactose-free meals from a set menu. We carry dry provisions that cover most needs. Please note: at altitude, digesting heavy protein or very high-fibre foods is difficult — our menu is designed around what bodies tolerate well at elevation. For safari: all lodge and camp restaurants accommodate dietary requirements and we inform each property in advance. If you have severe allergies (nuts, shellfish) or medical dietary needs (diabetic, coeliac), tell us at booking and we will work with our kitchen teams individually.

Can I climb Kilimanjaro if I have a medical condition?

It depends on the condition. We have guided climbers with controlled hypertension, controlled Type 2 diabetes, mild asthma, and previous joint replacements. What matters is: the condition is stable and well-managed with medication, you have a doctor's letter confirming fitness for high-altitude trekking to 5,895m, and you have discussed altitude-specific medication (e.g. Diamox for altitude acclimatisation) with your doctor. Conditions that require careful assessment include: cardiac conditions, uncontrolled hypertension, severe asthma, and insulin-dependent diabetes. We ask all clients to complete a health questionnaire at booking — this is reviewed by our team and, where needed, by our consulting physician in Arusha. We will tell you honestly if we have concerns.
