Planning

Planning Your First Combo Trip

Is combining Kilimanjaro and a safari a good idea for a first trip to Tanzania?

It is the single best way to experience Tanzania. Most first-time visitors have two goals: test themselves on the mountain and see wildlife at scale. Both are genuinely possible in one trip. The combo is also practical โ€” Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) is 90 minutes from Arusha, the safari gateway. Your international flights already get you there. Adding four days of safari costs less than a separate trip and requires no extra flights. We have been running combo itineraries since 1978 and it remains our most requested format for first-time Tanzania visitors.

How many days do I need for a Kilimanjaro + safari combo?

The minimum viable combo is 10 days: 7 days climbing (Machame route) + 2 days safari + 1 rest day. At this length you are moving efficiently. Our recommendation for first-timers is 14 days minimum โ€” this gives you 7 days on the mountain, 2 rest/recovery days, and 5 days of safari covering the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire. A longer trip means you are not rushing either experience and you arrive at each destination with more energy. The longest we regularly arrange is 21 days โ€” Machame, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Zanzibar.

Do I need a visa for Tanzania?

Most nationalities can obtain a Tanzania tourist visa on arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) or Julius Nyerere Airport (DAR). The cost is $52 for most passport holders (US, UK, EU, AU). You will need: a passport valid for 6+ months, proof of yellow fever vaccination (required if arriving from a yellow fever country, recommended regardless), a return ticket, and proof of accommodation. Visa-on-arrival queues can be long โ€” we can arrange a fast-track service through a local partner if you prefer. Business visas ($104) allow longer stays if you need them.

Do I need travel insurance for this trip?

Yes โ€” and not all policies cover Kilimanjaro. Standard travel insurance often excludes activities above 4,000m, so check the policy wording carefully. You need a policy that covers: high-altitude trekking (to 6,000m), emergency medical evacuation (this is critical โ€” helicopter evacuation from the mountain costs $15,600-30,000 without insurance), trip cancellation, and personal belongings. We recommend Battleface, World Nomads, or True Traveller for Kilimanjaro-specific cover. Share your policy number and emergency contact with your consultant before departure. This is not optional โ€” it is essential.

Health

Health and Altitude

What vaccinations do I need before traveling to Tanzania?

Yellow fever is the only mandatory vaccination if you are arriving from a yellow fever endemic country (parts of sub-Saharan Africa and South America). For your own protection, we strongly recommend: Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid, Tetanus, and Cholera. Rabies is recommended if you will be near any animals. Dengue fever exists in coastal areas โ€” use insect repellent. Malaria is present in lower elevations of Tanzania but not at Kilimanjaro's altitude (above 3,000m) and not in the highland safari parks. Anti-malarial prophylaxis is still recommended for the lower-elevation parts of your trip. Consult a travel clinic 6-8 weeks before departure.

Will I suffer from altitude sickness on Kilimanjaro?

Almost everyone experiences some degree of altitude effect. The key number to know: Kilimanjaro's summit is at 5,895m โ€” that is nearly 20,000 feet. Altitude sickness symptoms (headache, nausea, fatigue, shortness of breath) are common above 3,500m and affect roughly 75% of climbers to some degree. The good news: our itineraries are designed around altitude acclimatisation โ€” we follow the climb-high, sleep-low principle on every route. Proper hydration, pace discipline, and listening to your body make a significant difference. Our guides are trained to monitor symptoms daily. If symptoms become serious, our protocol is immediate descent โ€” no summit attempt is worth your health.

Fitness

Fitness and Preparation

How fit do I need to be to climb Kilimanjaro?

You do not need to be an athlete โ€” but you do need a baseline of cardiovascular fitness and the willingness to walk for 5-8 hours per day at altitude. The fitter you are, the more you will enjoy the climb and the higher your summit success probability. We recommend: 3-4 months of preparation including 2-3 cardio sessions per week (hiking, running, cycling, swimming), one long hike per weekend in your final month, and strength work for your legs and core. The most important factor is not raw fitness โ€” it is your body's ability to function well at altitude. Age is not a barrier: we have guided climbers from 10 to 82. The oldest summiter we have personally guided was 79.

The Climb

The Kilimanjaro Climb

What is the success rate for summiting Kilimanjaro?

The average summit success rate across all operators is around 65%. Safari Kilimanjaro consistently achieves 85-90% because we prioritise proper acclimatisation itineraries โ€” we never rush the climb. The route you choose makes a significant difference: Machame (our most popular) runs at 80-90% success. Lemosho runs at 85-95%. Marangu (the 'Coca-Cola' route) has lower success rates due to its faster ascent profile. Our consultants will recommend the right route for your fitness level and timeframe. Climbers who follow their guide's advice on pace and hydration dramatically outperform the average.

What happens if I cannot summit โ€” do I get a partial refund?

We will never push you beyond what is safe. If altitude sickness or injury prevents you from reaching the summit, your guide will make the call โ€” and it is always a conservative one. We descend immediately when symptoms warrant it. In terms of pricing: the park fees, guide costs, and accommodation that have already been committed are non-refundable. But we will work with you on a rescue and evacuation plan at no extra guiding cost, and we will do everything possible to rearrange your safari to accommodate the changed schedule. The safety decision always comes first โ€” and we will be honest with you about realistic summit probability before you even start the climb.

What is the best route up Kilimanjaro for first-timers?

For first-timers, we recommend the Machame Route โ€” it offers the best balance of scenery, acclimatisation, and summit success of any route. It is a 7-day itinerary which gives your body more time to adjust to altitude compared to the 6-day options. The Rongai Route (approaching from the north, near the Kenyan border) is a good option for those who want fewer crowds โ€” it is less frequently taken. The Lemosho Route is excellent for those with extra time (8-9 days) and offers the most pristine start to the climb. We do not recommend Marangu for first-timers despite its lower price โ€” its faster profile means lower summit success rates. Your consultant will help you choose the right route for your fitness level and timeframe.

Packing

Packing for the Trip

What should I pack for a Kilimanjaro climb and safari combo?

Pack in layers โ€” temperatures range from +30ยฐC at the base to -20ยฐC at the summit. The essential kit list: hiking boots (well broken in), thermal layers, a down jacket rated to -20ยฐC, waterproof outer shell, sleeping bag rated to -15ยฐC, headlamp, high-SPF sunscreen, and a 60-80L trek bag. Your day pack (30L) carries water, layers, and camera. For the safari portion, neutral-coloured clothing (no bright colours or white), a light fleece, comfortable walking shoes, binoculars, and a good camera with zoom are the essentials. We send every client a full packing checklist 8 weeks before departure. We also rent technical gear (sleeping bags, trekking poles, down suits) if you prefer not to buy.

On The Ground

Life on the Ground

What kind of food is served on the mountain and during the safari?

On the mountain: breakfasts are continental (eggs, toast, porridge, fruit), lunches are packed trail lunches (sandwiches, boiled eggs, fruit, cheese), and dinners are cooked hot (rice, pasta, meat, vegetables, soup). We can accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and most other dietary requirements with advance notice โ€” just tell us at booking. Safari meals are taken at lodges and camps: full breakfast buffets, packed lunches during full game drive days, and three-course dinners. Tanzania's cuisine is a pleasant surprise โ€” nyama choma (grilled meat), ugali (maize staple), and fresh tropical fruit are staples.

Can I charge my phone and camera batteries during the trip?

On the mountain: charging is possible at the lower altitude camps (Lemosho Glades, Shira Camp) via solar panels or generator at some camps โ€” but it is unreliable and slow. We strongly recommend bringing multiple charged batteries and a power bank (20,000mAh minimum). At Arusha lodges between the climb and safari, charging is fully available. On safari: all our partner lodges and camps have charging points in the tents/rooms. For photography, bring at least 3 batteries and a solar charger if you are a heavy user. The wildlife does not repeat itself โ€” you will be shooting constantly.

Safety

Safety and Solo Travel

Is Tanzania safe for solo travelers?

Tanzania is one of Africa's safer destinations for solo travellers. Violent crime against tourists is rare. The main practical risks are: petty theft (don't leave valuables unattended), road safety (wear seatbelts, don't ride motorbikes), and altitude illness (monitor yourself). As a solo traveller, you will be paired with other climbers on group climbs โ€” our group sizes are small (maximum 8) so you will get to know your fellow climbers. Single supplements apply to accommodation unless you request a shared room. Our guides are with you from arrival to departure โ€” you are never alone in a foreign situation. Solo female travellers: Tanzania is generally welcoming. See our women climbing Kilimanjaro guide for specific advice.

Costs

Money and Costs

Should I tip the guides and porters? How does that work?

Tipping is customary and expected โ€” it makes up a significant portion of mountain crew income. The standard tip pool for a 7-day Machame climb is $260-350 per climber, distributed among the guide, assistant guides, cook, and porters by the head guide. Our team carries your main luggage (up to 15kg) โ€” you only carry your day pack. On safari, tipping your guide is also customary: $16-25 per day for excellent guiding is the range. We provide tipping guidelines in writing before your trip and the head guide manages the mountain tip pool fairly.

How much does a Kilimanjaro + safari combo cost in total?

Our combo packages start from $3,952 per person for a 10-day Machame + 3-day safari. This includes: park fees, accommodation, meals on the mountain, certified guides, private safari vehicle, lodge stays, and all transfers. International flights ($832-1,500 from Europe, $1,248-2,000 from North America), tips ($364-500), travel insurance ($83-200), visas ($52), and personal gear ($312-800 if buying new) are not included. The total for a well-prepared first-timer from Europe or North America typically runs $6,240-9,500 for a 14-day quality combo. See our Kilimanjaro Safari Cost page for a full price breakdown.
