Day-by-day itinerary

This itinerary is designed for experienced hikers with limited time. The pace on the mountain is demanding โ€” we do not recommend this for genuine first-time climbers unless you are already hiking at altitude regularly.

Elevation: 1,840m
Distance: 11 km
Time: 5โ€“6 hours

Day 1 โ€” Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Arusha to Machame Gate (1,800m). The climb begins through rainforest โ€” lush, green, and deceptively beautiful. You will gain roughly 1,000m today o...

Highlight

First views of the Shira Plateau emerge as you clear the treeline.

Elevation: 3,840m
Distance: 5 km
Time: 4โ€“5 hours

Day 2 โ€” Machame Camp to Shira Camp

A short but steep day. The terrain shifts from rainforest to heath and then moorland. The air thins noticeably โ€” this is where most people start to...

Highlight

Kibo volcano appears ahead โ€” your summit target, visible for the first time.

Elevation: 3,900m
Distance: 10 km
Time: 6โ€“7 hours

Day 3 โ€” Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

This is your acclimatisation day in disguise โ€” you climb to 4,600m at Lava Tower before descending to Barranco Camp (3,900m). The 'climb high, sleep low' principle is your best tool against altitude sickness. The Lava Tower section is the most demanding of the trip so far: exposed, rocky, and requiring real effort. Barranco Camp is one of the most spectacular campsites in the world โ€” the Barranco Wall looms directly above you.

Highlight

The Barranco Wall at dawn โ€” a 300m cliff face you will scramble up tomorrow.

Elevation: 4,000m
Distance: 5 km
Time: 4โ€“5 hours

Day 4 โ€” Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Day 4 begins with the Barranco Wall scramble โ€” not technical, but sustained. The Wall is steep but the rewards are immediate: sweeping views across the Great Rift Valley and down into the Karanga Valley. After the Wall, the trail contours along the southern circuit before a final ascent to Karanga Camp. This is shorter and quieter than other days โ€” a welcome relief after yesterday's demands.

Highlight

Climbing the Barranco Wall as the sun rises โ€” genuinely unforgettable.

Elevation: 4,673m
Distance: 3 km
Time: 3โ€“4 hours

Day 5 โ€” Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Short. Steep. Cold. This is the setup day for summit night. Barafu Camp sits on a bleak, exposed ridge with Kibo crater visible above you. You arri...

Highlight

The last hot meal before the summit. Tents at 4,673m in the cold dark.

Elevation: 5,895m โ†’ 2,700m
Distance: 5 km up / 12 km down
Time: 14โ€“16 hours total

Day 6 โ€” Summit Night and Descent

Departure between 23:00 and 01:00. The climb to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) takes 6-8 hours via Stella Point or the direct Barafu ridge. The temperature at...

Highlight

Standing at Uhuru Peak as the African sun rises over the Serengeti 5,000m below.

Elevation: 0m descent
Distance: Transfer + game drive
Time: Full day

Day 7 โ€” Arusha + Ngorongoro Crater Safari

You wake in Mweaki Camp after the longest day of your life. After breakfast, you descend to Arusha (2-3 hours), arriving by mid-morning. A hot show...

Highlight

Ngorongoro lion pride on the crater floor โ€” your first wildlife after six days on the mountain.

Ngorongoro Crater at sunrise โ€” your reward after the mountain

Ngorongoro Crater โ€” the world's largest intact volcanic caldera and your final stop after the summit.

Is the 7-day right for you?

This itinerary exists because real people have limited annual leave. If you have 7 days in Tanzania and want to climb Kilimanjaro AND do a safari, this is the only way to do it. But it demands more from you than our longer combos.

โœ“ Choose 7 days if...

  • โ€”You are a strong hiker with recent multi-day mountain experience
  • โ€”You have been above 3,500m at least once in the past 6 months
  • โ€”You run or cycle regularly and have strong cardiovascular endurance
  • โ€”You have just 7 days of annual leave available
  • โ€”You have a high pain threshold and understand the physical demands

โ†’ Choose 10 days instead if...

  • โ€”This is your first multi-day high-altitude hike
  • โ€”You are over 50 years old with any cardiovascular concerns
  • โ€”You want to properly enjoy the safari experience, not just survive it
  • โ€”You have even modest flexibility in your travel dates
  • โ€”You want the highest possible summit success rate (~90%+)

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 7 days enough for Kilimanjaro and a safari?

It is tight โ€” this is the most compressed combo we offer. You get one full safari day (Ngorongoro Crater) and a 6-day Machame climb. The Machame route at 6 days is faster than ideal but achievable for fit hikers. If you have any flexibility at all, we recommend the 10-day minimum: it gives you proper acclimatisation on the mountain and a more relaxed safari. Seven days is for climbers who have limited leave and are already endurance-fit.

Why Machame and not Marangu for a short trip?

The Machame route has a higher summit success rate than Marangu (85% vs 65%) because the ascent profile is better for acclimatisation. On a tight timeline, you need every advantage. Marangu's continuous ascent without proper height variation makes altitude sickness more likely. We do not recommend the Rongai route for combos โ€” it approaches from the north and adds transfer time that cuts into your safari.

What is the summit success rate on this itinerary?

With 6 days on Machame (instead of the ideal 7), expect approximately 80-85% summit success for first-time climbers at good fitness. The key variable is how well you hydrate, eat, and pace yourself on the summit night. Our guides are experienced at pacing groups and identifying early signs of altitude issues โ€” they will not push you if the situation is dangerous.

Is this itinerary suitable for first-time climbers?

Only if you are already a strong hiker with a high fitness level. First-time climbers attempting the 6-day Machame without prior altitude experience carry higher risk of not summiting or developing serious altitude sickness. We recommend at least one prior multi-day hike above 3,000m. If you are a genuine first-timer with a short timeframe, consider the 10-day Machame instead โ€” the extra days pay for themselves in summit probability.

What does a typical 7-day itinerary look like?

Day 1: Arusha to Machame Gate, climb to Machame Camp (1,840m). Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp (3,840m). Day 3: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp (3,900m) via Lava Tower โ€” critical acclimatisation day. Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (4,000m). Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,673m). Day 6: Summit (5,895m) then descend to Mweaki or Millennium Camp. Day 7: Mweaki to Arusha, then drive to Ngorongoro for a full crater game drive, return to Arusha in the evening or overnight at a lodge.

Why does the safari only cover Ngorongoro?

Time. The drive from Kilimanjaro to the Serengeti takes 6-7 hours each way. On a 7-day itinerary, you simply do not have the hours. Ngorongoro Crater delivers the highest wildlife density per square kilometre of any park in Tanzania โ€” you can see the Big Five in a single game drive. It is the most time-efficient safari option for this itinerary.

โ€œWe only had a week but Safari Kilimanjaro made it happen. Six days on Machame, one day in Ngorongoro โ€” and we summited. The office kept in touch the whole time on WhatsApp. Zero hassle.โ€

โ€œBooked the 7-day as a surprise for my husband's 40th. He thought he wasn't fit enough but the team built a plan around his training. Summit day was the hardest thing he's ever done โ€” and he cried at the top.โ€

โ€œDid the 7-day as a couple with no prior high-altitude experience. Kassim's team was realistic about expectations โ€” they told us we'd need to pace well. We did, and we made it. The crater safari the next day felt like a dream.โ€
