How many days do I need for Kilimanjaro and safari combined?
A minimum of 8 days covers a short safari after a 6-day climb. However, 12β16 days gives you the proper 7β8 day Lemosho or Machame climb plus 4β5 days of meaningful safari across Tarangire, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater. Rushing either experience to save days rarely works β altitude adjustment on the mountain and wildlife viewing in the parks both reward time.
Is it safe to do a safari after climbing Kilimanjaro?
Yes. The safari parks operate at 1,200mβ1,800m elevation β far below Kilimanjaro's summit at 5,895m. By the time you reach the safari circuit, you will have spent at least 48 hours below 3,000m and typically 2β3 days back in Arusha at 1,400m. Altitude-related effects fully resolve at these elevations. The only real risk is muscle soreness from the descent, which a game drive handles easily β you are sitting, not walking steep trails.
What should I pack for a Kilimanjaro and safari combo trip?
You need gear for two distinct environments. For the mountain: thermal layers, a quality -20Β°C sleeping bag, hiking boots broken in for the trek, and crampons for the summit night. For the safari: light neutral clothing, a good camera with zoom, binoculars, and sun protection. The overlap is small β quick-dry safari clothing works on the mountain but mountain thermal gear does not work in 35Β°C safari heat. We send a full 3-page packing list on booking and revisit it in your pre-trip call with Kassim.
Can beginners do both Kilimanjaro and a safari?
A healthy person with no mountaineering experience can summit Kilimanjaro β 95% of our successful climbers were beginners. The mountain is a trek, not a technical climb. What it demands is cardiovascular fitness, mental resilience, and proper acclimatisation. Safari is accessible to virtually anyone β game drives involve comfortable vehicle travel with short nature walks. The combo suits first-timers precisely because the safari provides a gentler second half of the trip after the mountain challenge.
What happens if I don't summit Kilimanjaro β can I still do the safari?
Absolutely. In fact, we have a specific recovery itinerary for climbers who turn back before the summit. The mountain experience itself β the forests, the Lava Tower at 4,600m, the Shira Plateau β is extraordinary even without the Uhuru Peak flag. After a rest night and a hot shower in Arusha, you are ready for the safari circuit. Many clients who did not summit tell us the wildlife experience more than compensated. We never treat a non-summit as a failure β the mountain gives what it gives.
Which Kilimanjaro route is best for combining with a safari?
The Lemosho Route is our recommended pairing for safari because of its 8-day itinerary β the best summit success rate of any route at 95%+. The extra days give your body more time to acclimatise, which means you arrive at safari feeling stronger, not weaker. The Machame Route at 7 days is the second choice β slightly cheaper, still excellent summit rates. The Marangu Route is less ideal for combining because hut accommodation is more rigid, and if altitude sickness strikes, you cannot easily adjust the schedule.
How much does a combined Kilimanjaro and safari trip cost?
A 10-day Machame + safari combo starts from $3,952 per person. A 14-day Lemosho + comprehensive safari starts from $5,096 per person. Both prices include all park fees, professional guides, accommodation, meals on the mountain, and safari vehicle with driver-guide. What is not included: international flights, Tanzania tourist visa ($52 at JRO), tips for mountain crew ($260β$416), personal travel insurance, and personal gear. Compare that to booking climb and safari separately with different operators β our combo price typically undercuts the combined cost by 10β15% because we eliminate the intermediary margin.
How fit do I need to be for the Kilimanjaro and safari combo?
For the safari component: minimal fitness is needed. Game drives are accessible to most people. For the mountain component: you need solid cardiovascular fitness. The fitter you are, the more you will enjoy the trek. We recommend 3β4 months of preparation: hiking or stair climbing 3β4 times per week, 45β90 minutes per session, building to the equivalent of 1,200m elevation gain in a day. Cycling, swimming, and running all build the needed cardiovascular base. Prior mountaineering experience is not required β determination and preparation matter far more than natural talent.
What is the best time of year for a Kilimanjaro and safari combo?
JanuaryβMarch and JuneβOctober are the prime windows. JanuaryβMarch offers the best summit conditions β lower winds, clearer skies, warmer temperatures on the mountain β plus the calving season in the Serengeti where the Great Migration produces thousands of newborn wildebeest. JuneβOctober coincides with the dry season: easier wildlife viewing as animals cluster around water sources, cooler mountain temperatures, and the classic green season transition. The shoulder months of AprilβMay have cheaper pricing but the long rains make the mountain more challenging and some roads in the southern parks become difficult.
Can I do this trip as a solo traveller?
Yes β and many solo travellers find the combo particularly rewarding. On the mountain you join a small group of 6β10 climbers with your own guide and support crew. On safari you may join a group or take a private vehicle. Solo travellers on the combo do not pay a forced single supplement if they are willing to share a tent on the mountain β we pair solo travellers of the same gender unless you request otherwise. The pricing works out favourably compared to booking solo supplements with two separate operators.
Should I do safari before or after climbing Kilimanjaro?
For most travellers we recommend safari first, then Kilimanjaro. The logic: if altitude sickness cuts your climb short, you still have the wildlife experience as consolation. If you do the safari first and the climb fails, you have lost both. That said, experienced mountaineers or those with summit as their non-negotiable often prefer to climb first β the achievement feels cleaner at the top of the narrative. We discuss this in detail during your planning call and the decision is yours β we have done both sequences successfully with hundreds of clients.
How does altitude sickness affect the safari portion?
It does not β by design. Altitude sickness on Kilimanjaro is caused by rapid ascent to elevations above 3,500m. By the time you complete the mountain and descend to Arusha at 1,400m, all altitude effects have resolved. The safari parks are all well below 2,000m. There is no residual altitude effect on safari. The concern some clients have β will I still feel ill on safari after the mountain β is unfounded. You may feel muscle soreness from the descent, but that is a physical recovery issue, not an altitude issue.
Is it cheaper to book Kilimanjaro and safari separately or as a combo?
A combo booking is almost always cheaper than booking the two components separately. When you book with one operator for both, you eliminate the intermediary margin that each operator adds when selling to a broker or end client. We pass that saving back to you. Additionally, logistics are more efficient: one airport transfer, one operator coordination, no gap days between operators where you are paying for accommodation with no activity. Our 14-day Lemosho + safari combo is typically $416β$624 less than the same itinerary booked as two separate trips with two operators.
How do I prepare for Kilimanjaro altitude before the trip?
The single most effective preparation is cardiovascular training β hiking, stair climbing, running, cycling. Aim for 3β4 sessions per week in the 3β4 months before your climb, building gradually. No specific altitude chamber or altitude medication is needed for Kilimanjaro if you follow the 8-day Lemosho or 7-day Machame routes with proper acclimatisation built in. If you have a history of altitude illness, discuss this with your doctor β Diamox (acetazolamide) can help some climbers adapt faster, though we recommend trying it before the trip to see how your body reacts. Hydration also matters enormously at altitude: drink 3β4 litres of water per day on the mountain.
What wildlife will I see on safari after Kilimanjaro?
Our standard post-Kili safari covers Tarangire (elephant herds, baobab landscapes), the Serengeti (Big Five, the Great Migration depending on season), and Ngorongoro Crater (compact wildlife density, including black rhino). On a 4β5 day safari you have a strong chance of seeing all of the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino. The Ngorongoro Crater floor is one of the most reliable places in Africa for rhino sightings. Birders will find 400+ species across the circuit β the diversity is remarkable.
How soon after climbing Kilimanjaro can I start my safari?
We recommend a minimum 24-hour rest in Arusha after descending from Kilimanjaro before starting your safari. This gives your muscles time to recover from the 5,895m descent and allows you to have a proper night's sleep at 1,400m elevation. Most clients fly into Arusha the afternoon after summit night and begin safari the following morning. If your descent was difficult β for example, if you came down faster than planned due to altitude symptoms β extending to 36β48 hours in Arusha is wise. The safari vehicles are comfortable, and game drives involve sitting, not walking, so you do not need to be fully recovered to enjoy wildlife viewing.
What photography opportunities does the Kilimanjaro and safari combo offer?
The combo is a photographer's dream β two completely different landscapes within one trip. On the mountain: the forest zones of the lower slopes offer macro wildlife photography (colobus monkeys, birdlife, giant lobelias), the alpine desert zone produces dramatic basalt and scree textures, and the summit night delivers the most iconic silhouette photography in Africa β summiteers against the flat-topped Kibo crater with the sun rising behind. On safari: the wildlife opportunities are extraordinary. We recommend a 200β600mm zoom lens for wildlife, a wide-angle for landscapes, and a smartphone works remarkably well for video. Your guide knows exactly where to position the vehicle for the best angle on a lion pride or a leopard in a sausage tree.
What travel insurance do I need for the Kilimanjaro and safari combo?
Travel insurance is mandatory for this trip β no exceptions. Your policy must cover three specific things: medical evacuation from Kilimanjaro (helicopter rescue from 5,895m can cost $31,200β$52,000 without insurance), trip cancellation and interruption (if altitude sickness forces you to descend early), and high-altitude activities. Many standard policies exclude anything above 4,000m β verify your policy explicitly covers Kilimanjaro summit night. We recommend a policy with a minimum $104,000 medical evacuation benefit, $5,200 trip cancellation, and a clause for adventure activities. Companies like World Nomads, SafetyWing, and Battleface specialise in high-altitude coverage. Share your policy details with us before departure β we log your emergency contacts and evacuation protocol.
What is the age limit for the Kilimanjaro and safari combo?
The minimum age for the Kilimanjaro portion is 10 years old, based on Tanzania National Parks regulations. In practice, we assess children aged 10β15 individually β the climb is demanding for young bodies and the altitude affects children differently. Most operators and our own experience suggest 12β13 is the practical minimum for an enjoyable summit attempt. There is no maximum age limit β our oldest summiteer was 79. What matters is fitness and health, not age. Climbers over 65 require a signed medical clearance from their doctor. Safari has no age restrictions at all β our safari vehicles accommodate children and elderly guests comfortably. Family groups with children under 10 can do a safari-focused itinerary while adults handle the mountain portion.
How much should I tip the mountain and safari crews?
Tipping on Kilimanjaro is customary and significant β your mountain crew of 5β7 people (guide, assistant guides, cook, porters) rely heavily on tips as income. The industry standard tip range is $260β$416 per person for the entire climb. At Safari Kilimanjaro, we advocate for the higher end of this range because the crews work extraordinarily hard β carrying 15β20kg of gear, setting up camp, cooking meals at altitude. For safari, tipping is appreciated but less structured: $10β$21 per day for your safari driver-guide is appropriate. Do not tip in USD cash on the mountain β USD attracts unwanted attention; tip in Tanzanian shillings drawn from an ATM before the climb, or ask us to add a crew tip pool to your invoice for convenience.
Can I add Zanzibar to my Kilimanjaro and safari combo?
Yes β the Zanzibar add-on is one of our most requested extensions. After the physical intensity of the mountain and safari, Zanzibar offers the perfect recovery environment: warm Indian Ocean, Stone Town cultural exploration, snorkelling or diving on the reef. A typical extension is 3β5 nights. We usually recommend adding Zanzibar at the end of the trip rather than between mountain and safari β the malaria prophylaxis and sun/relaxation contrast works better sequentially. Adding Zanzibar to a 14-day Lemosho + safari package brings the total trip to 17β19 days and adds approximately $832β$1,560 per person depending on accommodation level. Zanzibar beach resorts range from boutique to luxury, and the transition from Tanzanian savanna to Indian Ocean island is one of the most dramatic in Africa.
What is your deposit and cancellation policy?
A 30% deposit secures your booking. The remaining 70% is due 60 days before your departure date. Cancellation terms: up to 60 days before departure β full refund minus the 30% deposit. 30β60 days β 50% refund. 15β30 days β 25% refund. Under 15 days β no refund. These terms reflect our advance commitments to guides, porters, camps, and park authorities. If Safari Kilimanjaro ever cancels (safety advisory, insufficient group), you receive a full refund with no conditions. See our /booking-terms/ page for the full schedule.
Is my money safe if I book with Safari Kilimanjaro?
Your deposit is held against real commitments β we pre-book camps, park permits, and guide salaries before your trip begins. This is why our cancellation terms reflect those commitments. If we cancel your trip for any reason on our side, you receive a full refund immediately. We have been operating since 1978 and our reputation depends on every client returning home satisfied. We are a member of the Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO) and all client payments are handled through our Arusha office β no offshore payment processing.
