How to Plan Your
Kili + Safari Combo
A step-by-step guide to combining a Kilimanjaro climb with a Tanzania safari. Everything you need to know before you book โ from days required to common mistakes that ruin the trip.
Combining a Kilimanjaro climb with a Tanzania safari is the most common Tanzania itinerary we design โ and the most commonly done poorly by travellers who book with operators who do not run both products. This guide covers every planning decision from how many days you need to how to avoid the mistakes that turn a great combo into a frustrating one.
Step by Step
Six planning decisions that determine the quality of your trip

Mistakes to Avoid
The four mistakes we fix most often
โ Back-to-back booking with different operators
You end up managing two WhatsApp threads, two sets of logistics, and no single point of accountability. If your flight is delayed and you miss the route start, the Kili operator and safari operator each point at the other. We have resolved this situation for dozens of travellers who came to us after it happened.
โ Climbing Kili and starting safari the same day
Altitude illness does not care about your schedule. Descending from 5,895m to 1,800m in a day, then getting into a safari vehicle, is physically irresponsible. Most clients feel fine the day after descent โ but the first 24 hours require rest. We include a mandatory recovery day. Any operator who schedules game drives on descent day is cutting corners on your safety.
โ Underestimating the long rains
March through mid-May is the long rainy season on Kilimanjaro. Trails are slippery, visibility is poor, and summit success rates drop. Some operators still sell climbs during this window โ and clients still book them, unaware of what they are signing up for. We will not sell you a climb during peak rainy season unless you specifically request it with full knowledge of the trade-offs.
โ Booking too few safari days
A common itinerary we see from travellers who have booked elsewhere: 6 days total, with 5 spent on the mountain and 1 spent on safari. One game drive is not a safari. You will spend more time in the vehicle than watching wildlife, and you will miss the Serengeti or Ngorongoro entirely. Minimum for a real safari experience: 2 full days in addition to the mountain, covering Ngorongoro and one other park.
Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
How many days do I need for a Kili climb and safari combo?
Minimum: 10 days (7-day climb + 2 safari days + 1 rest day). This covers Machame + Ngorongoro Crater + Tarangire. Recommended: 13-14 days minimum if you want to include the Serengeti properly. The more days you have, the better both experiences get โ a 10-day combo is efficient, a 14-day combo is transformative.
Should I climb first or do safari first?
We strongly recommend climbing first and safari second. The physical demands of the mountain โ the altitude, the ascent, the descent โ are significant. Starting your safari fresh after recovering from the mountain is a better experience. There is also a psychological dimension: the sense of achievement from the summit creates a heightened appreciation for the wildlife below. Finishing on a high note, not a depleted one.
What if I get altitude sick on the mountain โ does it affect my safari?
It depends on the severity. Minor altitude symptoms (headache, fatigue) are common and resolve quickly once you descend. If symptoms are severe enough to require medical attention or evacuation, we adjust your safari accordingly โ either shortening it, reducing the pace, or in extreme cases postponing the safari portion entirely. We have managed this scenario many times and have protocols in place. Any reputable operator will have the same.
Can I do safari while still adjusting to altitude?
Yes โ but only after you have descended from the mountain. The altitude on safari (1,200-1,800m) is not problematic. What is problematic is starting a game drive on the same day as your descent from 5,895m. Once you have had a full night's rest at altitude below 2,000m, you can begin game drives. We build this into every itinerary we design.
What about visas, vaccinations, and travel insurance?
You will need a Tanzania tourist visa ($52 for most nationalities, available on arrival). Yellow fever vaccination is required if arriving from a yellow fever country โ and recommended regardless for travel to national parks. We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical evacuation (not just medical expenses). Evacuation from the mountain or remote safari areas by helicopter can cost $20,800-50,000 without insurance. We will not allow you on the mountain without confirming you have appropriate coverage.
