The Order Question

Kilimanjaro Then Safari
vs Safari Then Kilimanjaro

One of the first logistics questions every combo traveller faces: which experience should come first? Forty-seven years of Tanzania operations tells a clear story.

The Short Answer

For most travellers โ€” and we have done this thousands of times โ€” safari first, then Kilimanjaro is the smarter sequence. Not because the mountain is less important, but because the mountain is the bigger gamble. Altitude sickness, weather cancellations, fitness limitations โ€” these can end a climb. If the climb ends early, you still have the safari. Reverse the order and a failed summit means you leave Tanzania having missed both experiences.

That said, there is a valid case for climbing first. If you are exceptionally fit, if the summit is the non-negotiable primary objective, if nothing else would satisfy you โ€” go Kili first. But understand the risk you are accepting.

The Two Sequences

Option A โ€” Safari First, Then Kili

Altitude risk mitigation

AMS affects 75% of climbers. If you develop serious altitude symptoms on the mountain, you can still salvage the safari.

Wildlife as the reward

After the physical test of the mountain, arriving in the Serengeti feels like entering another world. The contrast is extraordinary.

Recovery time built in

The safari naturally provides recovery time โ€” gentle game drives, good food, comfortable camps. You decompress after the mountain test.

Better summit focus

Knowing the safari is already completed removes one source of mental pressure. You can commit fully to the climb.

Recommended itinerary

Days 1-4: Arusha + Serengeti/Ngorongoro. Days 5-7: rest in Arusha, acclimatise lightly. Days 8-15: Kilimanjaro climb (Lemosho 8-day). Summit, descend, fly home.

Option B โ€” Kili First, Then Safari

Achievement first

Summiting Uhuru Peak is the defining moment of the Tanzania trip. Doing it first means your greatest achievement is not shadowed by fatigue.

Cleaner narrative

Africa's highest peak, then the wildlife. The story of the trip has a natural arc: mountain, then savanna.

No safari fatigue

If you do the safari first and fall in love with Tanzania, you may feel less urgency to push for the summit. Reversing the order protects summit motivation.

Shorter safari if you turn back

If the climb fails and you need to head home, at least the primary objective was attempted first.

Recommended itinerary

Days 1-8: Kilimanjaro climb (Lemosho 8-day). Summit, descend. Days 9-10: rest + hot springs recovery in Arusha. Days 11-14: Serengeti/Ngorongoro safari. Fly home.

Will I Be Too Tired for Safari After Climbing?

This is the concern we hear most. The honest answer: you will be sore, but not exhausted. A game drive is not a trek. You sit in a vehicle, you stop for walks, you eat well, you sleep in a proper bed. After a rest day at altitude and a night in Arusha, most clients report feeling genuinely restored. Several have told us the safari was more enjoyable because of the mountain โ€” the contrast made both experiences sharper and more memorable.

The one exception: if you summitted and the descent was brutal โ€” say a night march to meet a sunrise summit โ€” you might need two recovery days before focusing on wildlife. We build this into every post-Kili safari itinerary as standard.

FAQ โ€” Safari First or Kili First

Is it better to climb Kilimanjaro before or after a safari?

For most travellers, we recommend safari first, then Kilimanjaro. Here is why: if you attempt the mountain first and altitude sickness cuts your climb short, you can still enjoy the safari as consolation. Reversing that โ€” doing the safari first, getting injured or ill, and then failing the summit attempt โ€” loses you the wildlife experience. That said, climbers who are exceptionally fit and well-prepared can comfortably do Kili first.

Will I be too tired from climbing Kilimanjaro to enjoy a safari?

Not if you plan the rest day correctly and choose a smart itinerary. After summitting, we include a full rest day at altitude before descending. Climbers typically descend from the peak to 3,000m in a single day, then spend the night at a lower camp. By the time you reach the safari vehicle 2-3 days after the summit, muscle soreness remains but you are not mountaineering โ€” you are sitting in a comfortable 4x4 game drive vehicle. Most clients report the safari feels restorative after the mountain.

What is the ideal rest time between Kilimanjaro and a safari?

We build in 2-3 days between the mountain descent and your first game drive. Day after summit is spent at lower altitude recovering. Day two involves the drive from the mountain region to the safari circuit โ€” Arusha to the Serengeti or Ngorongoro. You arrive at your first camp by late afternoon. By your first full safari day, you are typically well-rested and ready to focus on wildlife.

Can altitude sickness from Kilimanjaro affect my safari?

By the time you reach the safari circuit, you will have been at altitude below 3,000m for at least 48 hours. Altitude effects resolve fully within 1-2 days of descending. The safari parks operate at 1,200m-1,800m โ€” well below any altitude concern. There is no residual altitude risk once you leave the mountain.

What if I climb Kilimanjaro and don't summit โ€” can I still do the safari?

Absolutely. In fact, we have a specific recovery itinerary for climbers who turn back before the summit. The mountain experience itself โ€” the forests, the Lava Tower, the Shira Plateau โ€” is remarkable even without the Uhuru Peak flag. Climbers who do not summit typically still have 3-4 days of genuine mountain experience. After a rest night and a hot shower in Arusha, you are ready for the safari circuit. This is not a consolation prize โ€” it is a different extraordinary experience.

Does the order affect the total cost of the trip?

No โ€” the sequence does not materially change the cost. The logistics are similar in both directions: either way you are moving from Arusha to the mountain, then back through Arusha to the safari circuit. The only minor cost difference is if you fly out of Kilimanjaro Airport after the safari (instead of Arusha), which may affect internal flights. We plan the routing to minimise this regardless of order.
