Arusha Tanzania โ€” gateway to Kilimanjaro and the Northern Circuit safari parks

Arusha Arrival Guide

Your First Day in
Arusha, Tanzania

You have landed at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Here is everything that happens next โ€” and everything you need to know before you board.

The Gateway Town

What Is Arusha โ€” and Why Does It Matter for Your Trip?

Arusha is a small city in northern Tanzania โ€” population roughly 500,000 โ€” that sits at the geographic heart of Tanzania's tourism industry. It is not a tourist destination in itself. It is a logistics hub: the place where flights end, vehicles depart, and guides gather before heading to the mountain or the parks. Most visitors spend between one and three nights here.

The city sits at 1,400 metres altitude, on the lower slopes of Mount Meru โ€” the same altitude as many European ski resorts. This matters because it is the last taste of "normal" altitude before your climb takes you rapidly higher. The oxygen content here is about 83% of sea level. Most people feel it for the first 24 hours โ€” a slightly heavier breath on stairs, a marginally faster heartbeat. By the time you are briefing with your guide, your body is already beginning to acclimatise.

Arusha is also where the Kassim family has operated Safari Kilimanjaro since 1978. Every pre-climb briefing, every gear check, every itinerary begins in this town. The Arusha you experience as a visitor โ€” the hotels, the coffee shops, the morning markets โ€” is not polished for tourists. It is working Tanzanian city life, and it is part of the full picture of what this country is.

Day 0 โ€” Your Arrival

What Actually Happens When You Land

Most international flights land at Kilimanjaro International Airport in the mid to late afternoon. Here is the sequence from runway to hotel bed.

01

Step 1: Immigration & Customs

After landing, you pass through immigration at JRO โ€” the same terminal used by all international arrivals. Have your passport, return ticket, and proof of yellow fever vaccination ready if required. The visa-on-arrival counter (most nationalities: $52) is clearly signposted. Queues vary โ€” allow 20-45 minutes depending on how many flights have arrived simultaneously. Your luggage is usually waiting by the time you clear customs.

02

Step 2: Meet Your Transfer Driver

A Safari Kilimanjaro representative will be waiting in the arrivals hall, holding a sign with your name. If you cannot find them, call the emergency number in your booking confirmation โ€” we monitor all major flight arrivals. If you have any issues with luggage, your driver will assist in coordinating with the airline lost baggage desk before departing.

03

Step 3: The Drive to Arusha

The transfer from JRO to your Arusha hotel takes 60-90 minutes, passing through the town of Kilimanjaro and the small settlements of the lower slopes. On a clear day you will see Mount Meru to the west; on a rare clear evening, you may glimpse Kilimanjaro's summit ice fields to the north. This drive is your first real introduction to the Tanzanian landscape.

04

Step 4: Check In & Evening Briefing

On arrival at your Arusha hotel, you will check in and have time to shower and rest before dinner. In the evening โ€” typically after dinner โ€” your lead guide will visit to introduce the team, give a route overview, and begin answering your questions. This is not a formal presentation. It is a conversation. Ask anything. The more you know before you start, the better the climb goes.

05

Step 5: Early Night

You will be asleep by 9pm โ€” and you should be. Summit night begins at midnight in roughly a week's time. The body that arrives jet-lagged and exhausted from a long flight is the same body that will be asked to perform at altitude. Rest is not optional. Your guide will confirm departure time for the morning, and someone from the team will meet you for breakfast.

Day 1 Morning

The Pre-Climb Briefing and Gear Check

On the morning after your arrival, your lead guide arrives at the hotel after breakfast. Over 60-90 minutes, they will walk you through everything you need to know: the exact route profile, daily elevation gains and camp altitudes, how the pace groups work, what the signs of altitude sickness look like and what the protocol is if they appear, what food to expect, how tips are managed, and what to do in an emergency.

This briefing is one of the most underappreciated parts of a guided climb. Most of what makes a climb go well โ€” or badly โ€” comes down to whether the client understands their own body and the guide's instructions. We have sent hundreds of climbers who were nervous before this briefing and felt genuinely prepared after it.

The gear check follows. Your guide will inspect your boots (sole condition, break-in), your layers (are they actually warm enough?), your sleeping bag rating, your day pack fit, and your medication. If anything is wrong or missing, we have spare equipment in Arusha โ€” walking poles, sleeping bags, down jackets, and more โ€” that can be fitted before departure.

โ€”

Route Profile Review

Your guide shows you the exact trail on a map โ€” camp elevations, daily distances, altitude gain per day.

โ€”

Medical Check

Any current medications, any recent injuries, any ongoing health concerns. Altitude and exertion affect everyone differently.

โ€”

Gear Inspection

Boots, layers, sleeping bag, rain shell, headlamp โ€” everything that matters on the mountain gets checked.

โ€”

Q&A โ€” Ask Anything

No question is too small. How do the toilets work? What if it rains every day? Can I charge my phone? Your guide has heard it all.

Common Questions

Arusha Arrival FAQ

Which airport should I fly into for a Kilimanjaro + safari trip?

Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is your destination โ€” it is 90 minutes from Arusha town and the closest airport to both the mountain and the main safari circuit. Several international airlines fly here including KLM, Ethiopian Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Kenya Airways. The alternative is Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam (DAR), which requires a 1-hour domestic connection to JRO. Always check that your international ticket arrives at JRO if possible.

Will someone meet me at the airport on arrival?

Yes. Safari Kilimanjaro provides a private transfer from Kilimanjaro International Airport directly to your Arusha hotel on arrival day. Your driver will be waiting in the arrivals hall with a Safari Kilimanjaro sign. You do not need to arrange a taxi. If your flight lands in the evening, we recommend staying in Arusha that night and beginning the pre-climb briefing the following morning โ€” the transfer alone takes 60-90 minutes from JRO.

What happens on day 1 โ€” the day I arrive?

Arrival day is designed around rest and preparation. Most flights from Europe land in the mid-afternoon. You will be transferred to your Arusha hotel, where you can shower, change, and recover from the journey. In the evening, your lead guide will call or visit to brief you on the climb: route overview, gear check, what to expect day by day, and any health questions. You are also welcome to simply rest โ€” day 1 is not strenuous. Dinner is included at the hotel on arrival night.

Do I need a day in Arusha before starting the Kilimanjaro climb?

Yes โ€” and it is included in every Safari Kilimanjaro itinerary. Arriving in Tanzania and heading straight to the mountain is not advisable. You need at least one night at Arusha altitude (~1,400m) to begin adjusting before you start climbing. This night also allows any delayed luggage from international flights to catch up, gives you time with your guide to ask questions, and lets the Kassim team do a full gear check before you head to the mountain. We have turned away clients who flew in the same morning โ€” altitude onset at 2,000m+ after an overnight flight is a rough introduction.

What should I do if my flight is delayed or my bags don't arrive?

Contact us immediately via WhatsApp or the emergency number in your booking confirmation โ€” we monitor arrivals. If your bags are delayed by the airline, we can help coordinate with the airline locally and ensure your hotel has spare clothing for the first night. If your flight is significantly delayed and you will miss your planned start day, we will adjust your itinerary โ€” this is why we always build a buffer day into longer itineraries. Do not attempt to start the climb without your main luggage.

Is Arusha a safe city? What should I be aware of?

Arusha is generally safe for tourists in the main hotel and tourist districts. As with any city, use normal precautions: keep valuables in your hotel safe, avoid displaying expensive jewellery or electronics in crowded areas, and use registered taxis (your hotel can call one for you). The main tourist areas around Clock Tower and Sekei are well-patroled. Violent crime against tourists is very low. Our guides and drivers know the city well and will advise you on any areas to avoid.

What is the pre-climb briefing and gear check?

On the morning after your arrival, your lead guide will meet you for a full pre-climb briefing. This covers: the route you will be taking, what to expect each day, how pace groups work, what to do if you feel unwell, emergency protocols, and a detailed Q&A. They will then do a physical gear check: your boots are inspected for break-in and sole condition, your sleeping bag is rated, your layers are assessed, your day pack is measured. If anything is missing, we have spare equipment in Arusha and can source what you need locally โ€” we have been doing this since 1978.

Can I use my phone / get WiFi / withdraw cash in Arusha?

Arusha has good 4G coverage via local SIM cards (Tigo, Vodacom, Airtel). We recommend buying a local SIM card at the airport โ€” it takes 5 minutes and costs $5-10 for a week of data. eSIMs also work if your phone supports them. WiFi is available at most hotels and restaurants. ATMs in Arusha accept international cards โ€” withdraw Tanzanian Shillings (TZS) as needed. USD is widely accepted in tourist areas but you will need shillings for small purchases and tips. Your guide will advise on reasonable cash amounts for the climb.

How do I connect the Arusha pre-climb night to the mountain and then to the safari?

Every Safari Kilimanjaro combo itinerary is designed as a single seamless journey: Day 0 (arrive JRO, transfer to Arusha hotel), Day 1 (briefing + gear check in Arusha, overnight), Day 2 (transfer to Machame Gate, climb begins). After the climb (Days 9-10), you return to Arusha, spend one night at a lodge, and depart the following morning for safari. You are never managing your own transport between legs โ€” our team handles every transfer. This continuity is one of the main reasons clients book with us rather than piecing together independent bookings.

What if I arrive a day early or need to stay in Arusha after the safari?

We can arrange additional nights at the same Arusha hotel before or after your main itinerary at preferential rates. If you want to explore Arusha town, we can also arrange a cultural visit: a coffee plantation tour, a Maasai market morning, or a relaxed lunch at one of the town's better restaurants. These are optional add-ons โ€” just tell us at booking. After the safari, most clients fly out from JRO, but you can also connect to Zanzibar (domestic flight from Arusha, 90 minutes) if you are adding a beach extension.
