Balloon Safari vs Game Drive
The silence of drifting at 300 metres above the Serengeti β or the thrill of tracking a lioness across the plains. Two completely different ways to experience Tanzania's wildlife.
The Question We Are Asked Most
Is a balloon safari worth it? The honest answer is: it depends on what you want. A balloon safari is one of the most extraordinary experiences in global travel β silence, scale, and a perspective on wildlife that nothing else provides. A game drive is the classic Tanzania safari: close, immediate, and exciting in a completely different way. The two are not interchangeable. The ideal Tanzania safari itinerary includes both.

Know Before You Book
Balloon safaris must be booked well in advance
Slots are limited and fill quickly, especially during the Great Migration season (JulyβOctober) and in the Serengeti. We recommend booking at least 4β6 weeks ahead, and earlier for peak season. Last-minute availability is rare.
Weather can cancel your flight with no substitute
If wind or rain prevents your balloon from flying, you receive a full refund or a rebooked date β but no alternative wildlife experience is provided. Your morning is lost. Game drives, by contrast, operate in almost all conditions.
The landing can be firm
Balloon landings in the Serengeti are on open savannah and can be bumpy. Passengers need to be able to climb in and out of a high-sided basket and brace for landing. If you have back, knee, or mobility concerns, discuss this with your operator before booking.
Ballooning is not included in standard safari packages
Most safari packages list game drives as included activities. A balloon safari is an add-on β typically $520β$624 per person on top of your base safari cost. Make sure you see the full package price before committing.
You will not get close to animals in a balloon
The aerial perspective is extraordinary for landscape and herd dynamics, but you cannot approach, follow, or track specific animals the way a guide can in a vehicle. If close wildlife encounters are your priority, a game drive is more satisfying.

The Ideal Combination β Both in One Day
The best safaris include both. Start at dawn in a hot air balloon β drifting silently over the Serengeti as the sun rises and the herds begin to move. Land for a bush breakfast. Then, in the afternoon, take a game drive with the same knowledge and use the morning's aerial observations to guide your tracking on the ground. You experience Tanzania from both perspectives in a single day. This is what we recommend for travellers who have the budget and time for only one safari in Tanzania.
Balloon Safari vs Game Drive β FAQ
Can you see wildlife as well from a balloon as from a game drive?
You see different things, not better or worse. From a balloon at sunrise you get a god's-eye view of animal movements, herd dynamics, and landscape that no game drive can replicate. You will see animals undisturbed by vehicles. However, you cannot get close, you cannot track a specific animal, and you have no control over direction. A game drive gives you proximity, the ability to follow action, and the expertise of a spotter. The two experiences are complementary β not substitutes.
Is a balloon safari worth the extra cost?
For a once-in-a-lifetime Tanzania experience: yes. The Serengeti balloon safari at sunrise, drifting over the migration herds or the Ndutu plains, is one of the most extraordinary experiences in global travel. At $572-600 per person, it is expensive. But it is also a complete, self-contained hour β you are in the air before dawn and done by 8am, leaving the rest of your day free. If budget is the primary constraint, a game drive delivers more wildlife time per dollar.
Which parks offer balloon safaris?
Balloon safaris operate in the Serengeti (year-round, best July-March for migration), Ngorongoro Crater (year-round), and Tarangire (seasonal, June-October). The Serengeti is the premier location β the vast open plains make for ideal balloon conditions and the wildlife density is exceptional. Ngorongoro Crater balloon flights offer dramatic crater floor views but the airspace is regulated and slots are limited.
Is a balloon safari dangerous?
Tanzania balloon safari operators are highly regulated and experienced. Safety record is excellent. The main considerations are: you cannot choose your weather β flights are cancelled in high wind or rain (and you receive a refund or rebook), and you must be at the launch site before dawn, which requires an early wake-up. Ballooning is a weather-dependent activity. If your balloon flight is cancelled, you lose that hour β no substitute wildlife experience is automatically provided.
Can children do a balloon safari?
Most balloon operators require children to be at least 7 years old and 120cm tall. This is for safety reasons β the basket is high-sided and the landings can be firm. Younger children are generally not permitted. Some operators have specific family sessions. Check with your operator before booking. Game drives are accessible to all ages β they are the default safari activity for families with young children.
What is the famous Serengeti balloon safari champagne breakfast?
After landing, most Serengeti balloon operators arrange a bush breakfast in the wild β traditionally with champagne, fresh fruit, and a full cooked breakfast set up on folding tables in the savannah. This is included in the standard balloon safari price at reputable operators and is itself a memorable experience. The breakfast location is chosen for safety and aesthetics β you eat surrounded by the plains, not at a lodge.
Is it better to do a balloon safari in the morning and a game drive in the afternoon?
This is the ideal combination. The balloon flight at sunrise captures the golden-hour photography and aerial perspective. The afternoon game drive β after a morning balloon start β allows you to follow up on wildlife sightings from the air and cover different ground. Many safari packages that include ballooning structure the day exactly this way. The contrast between aerial stillness and the excitement of a game drive tracker is part of what makes Tanzania safari so complete.
