The Lemosho route on Kilimanjaro โ€” the best route for combining with a Northern Circuit safari

Route Comparison

Best Kilimanjaro Route for Safari Combo

The route you choose for Kilimanjaro affects more than the climb โ€” it shapes the logistics, timing, and physical readiness for your safari. Here is the honest comparison.

The Route Question Is Also a Safari Question

Most travellers spend a lot of time researching which Kilimanjaro route to take โ€” and not enough time thinking about how that choice affects the safari that comes after. The route you choose determines how many days you spend on the mountain, how tired you are at the bottom, and how quickly you can start safari after descending. These are safari variables as much as climbing variables.

Kilimanjaro Routes โ€” Safari Combo Comparison

Lemosho Route

Best overall for safari combo

8 days on the mountain, 2 days recovery in Arusha, then 5โ€“6 days on safari. Lemosho approaches from the west, through the Shira Plateau, and joins...

Safari Pairing

Excellent โ€” Lemosho finishes at Millstream Camp, a short drive from the Serengeti boundary. The descent route passes through terrain that wildlife agents regularly transit.

Best For

First-time climbers who want the best chance of summiting and a full safari experience.

Trade-off

More expensive than Marangu or Machame due to the longer itinerary and park fees.

Machame Route

Most popular โ€” scenic but steep

7 days on the mountain. Machame is the most popular route โ€” scenic, varied, with dramatic terrain changes. The steeper terrain makes it more challe...

Safari Pairing

Good โ€” Machame finishes at Mweka Gate, south of the mountain, requiring a transfer to Arusha before the safari starts. Add one rest day in Arusha after the descent before starting safari.

Best For

Experienced hikers who want a challenging climb and are comfortable with a tighter itinerary.

Trade-off

Steeper ascent profile means lower acclimatisation. 7-day Machame has noticeably lower summit rates than 8-day Lemosho.

Marangu Route

Only route with huts โ€” simplest logistics

6 days on the mountain, the only route with permanent sleeping huts. Marangu is the most basic of the established routes โ€” it is the old school app...

Safari Pairing

Good logistics โ€” Marangu finishes at Marangu Gate, close to Arusha. The shorter climb means more time for safari. But the lower summit rate is a real trade-off.

Best For

Travellers with limited time who prioritise the safari experience over the summit, or those with prior altitude experience.

Trade-off

Fastest ascent means lowest summit rate. Very basic hut accommodation compared to camping routes.

Northern Circuit

Longest, best acclimatisation, most remote

9 days on the mountain, approaching from the north and circuiting the mountain before joining the summit attempt from the north. The Northern Circu...

Safari Pairing

Excellent โ€” the Northern Circuit finishes in the north of the mountain, closest to the Northern Circuit safari parks. A descent from the north puts you closest to Ngorongoro and the Serengeti. The longer climb means you need a minimum of 14 days for Kili + Northern Circuit.

Best For

Experienced travellers who want the best possible summit chance and have 14+ days for the combined trip.

Trade-off

The longest and most expensive option. Requires a minimum of 14 days for a meaningful Kili + safari combination.

Our Recommendation for Most Travellers

For travellers combining a Kilimanjaro climb with a Northern Circuit safari, we recommend the 8-day Lemosho route. It has the highest summit rate of the commonly used routes (approximately 90%), it finishes in terrain that is relatively close to the Serengeti, and the 8-day length allows for a proper rest day in Arusha between the descent and the start of safari โ€” which matters more than most travellers expect.

If you have 14+ days total, Lemosho + 5-day Northern Circuit safari is the combination we send most of our clients on. If you have more time, the 9-day Northern Circuit route gives you the best possible summit chance โ€” and finishes in the north, closest to Ngorongoro.

Route for Safari Combo โ€” FAQ

Which Kilimanjaro route has the highest summit rate?

The 9-day Northern Circuit has the highest summit rate โ€” above 95%. The 8-day Lemosho is second, at approximately 90%. Both are significantly higher than the 6-day Marangu (approximately 60โ€“70%) or the 7-day Machame (approximately 75โ€“80%). The key variable is not the route itself but the number of days on the mountain โ€” more days means better acclimatisation and a dramatically higher chance of summiting.

Can I do Kilimanjaro and a safari in 10 days?

Technically yes, but it is tight. A 6-day Marangu climb (plus a rest day after descent) leaves 2โ€“3 days for safari โ€” enough for a taste of the Northern Circuit but not enough for a meaningful safari experience. For a proper Kili + safari combination, 14 days is the minimum we recommend: 8 days climbing, 1 rest day, 5 days safari.

Should I climb Kilimanjaro before or after my safari?

After is better โ€” with one important exception. Climbing after your safari means you arrive at the mountain already rested, and the safari itself (walking, early mornings, altitude) is excellent preparation for the physical demands of the climb. The only reason to do safari after Kili is logistical: if your international flight departs from Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) and you want to minimise backtracking, the safari-first ordering can make sense.

What is the minimum number of days needed for a meaningful Kili + Northern Circuit safari combination?

14 days: 8 days Lemosho climb + 1 Arusha rest day + 5 days Northern Circuit safari. This gives you 2 full safari days each in the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire โ€” enough for a genuine experience without feeling rushed. For a more relaxed pace, 16โ€“18 days allows more time on safari and a rest day or two in Arusha between the climb and safari.

Does the route I choose affect the safari experience?

Only in terms of logistics. Lemosho finishes closest to the Serengeti and requires the least transfer time to start safari. Northern Circuit finishes in the north, closest to Ngorongoro. Machame and Marangu both require a drive back to Arusha before starting safari. In terms of wildlife experience, the route makes no difference โ€” the safari is the same Northern Circuit whether you climbed Lemosho, Machame, or Marangu.

Is it better to book the climb and safari separately or as a combined package?

As a combined package is significantly better for the traveller. When one operator handles both, there is no handoff, no communication gap between companies, and no ambiguity about who is responsible if weather disrupts the schedule. Climbers who summit late on day 8 sometimes need an extra half-day to descend properly โ€” with a combined operator, that flexibility is built in. We have managed Kili + safari combinations for 48 years and have the logistics to make the transition smooth.
