After the Summit

Extend Your Trip After the Combo

You have done the climb. You have done the safari. Now what? The natural next steps after a Kilimanjaro-safari combo โ€” from Zanzibar beaches to Rwanda gorillas, from Tanzania southern circuit to a return summit attempt.

Discuss Extension Options

After a Kilimanjaro climb and a northern Tanzania safari, you have experienced two of the most remarkable things the continent has to offer. But East Africa has more to give โ€” and many clients find that a few extra days transforms a good trip into an extraordinary one.

We offer extension planning as part of every combo booking. Whether you want to decompress on a Zanzibar beach, push yourself further with a Rwanda gorilla encounter, or explore the quieter southern parks, we coordinate it seamlessly โ€” one operator, one invoice, no handoffs.

Extension Options

Extend Your Kili Safari | Zanzibar, Gorillas & More

The classic finish to a Tanzania trip. Fly from Arusha to Zanzibar in 90 minutes and transition from the physical challenge of the mountain and safari to the Indian Ocean โ€” white sand beaches, spice tours, Stone Town architecture, and some of the best diving in East Africa. A beach extension after Kilimanjaro is a deeply logical next step: you have pushed yourself physically, you have seen extraordinary wildlife, and you now deserve to simply relax. Most clients who add Zanzibar describe it as the perfect ending.

Duration: 3-5 daysBest for: Relaxation, culture, beaches, diving

$832 per person

Extend Your Kili Safari | Zanzibar, Gorillas & More

Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park is home to the mountain gorilla families made famous by Dian Fossey. A Kili-safari combo followed by gorilla trekking is the most ambitious East Africa itinerary possible โ€” you have done the highest peak in Africa and come face to face with one of the rarest animals on Earth. The trek itself is physically demanding (not at altitude, but on steep volcanic terrain) and emotionally profound. permits are limited and expensive ($1,560 per person per day), but the experience of spending an hour with a gorilla family is unlike anything else on Earth.

Duration: 3-4 days (including travel)Best for: Adventure, wildlife enthusiasts, once-in-a-lifetime experiences

From

$2,080+ per person

Highlight: Volcanoes National Park, golden monkeys, Kigali

Extend Your Kili Safari | Zanzibar, Gorillas & More

Most Tanzania visitors stick to the Northern Circuit โ€” Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire. The Southern Circuit โ€” Ruaha National Park and Selous Game Reserve โ€” offers a completely different Tanzania: wilder, quieter, with fewer vehicles and genuinely remote game viewing. Ruaha has exceptional lion and elephant populations. Selous (now Nyerere National Park) is the largest protected area in East Africa. Adding the Southern Circuit to your Kili-safari combo gives you the complete Tanzania experience.

Duration: 4-6 daysBest for: Second-time Tanzania visitors, serious wildlife enthusiasts

From

$1,560 per person

Highlight: Ruaha lions, Selous boat safaris, remote wilderness

At 5,199m, Mount Kenya is Africa's second-highest peak โ€” and significantly quieter than Kilimanjaro. If one summit is not enough, climbing Mount Kenya after Kilimanjaro is a logical progression. The Sirimon Route up Mount Kenya is beautiful โ€” through ancient cedar forests, past alpine lakes, to Point Lenana (4,985m). You can summit Mount Kenya and descend in the time it takes to recover from Kilimanjaro. This is the itinerary for the serious high-altitude mountaineer.

Duration: 5-7 daysBest for: Experienced mountaineers, peak baggers, second summit goals

From

$1,248 per person

Highlight: Point Lenana summit, Sirimon Route, Mount Kenya National Park

Extend Your Kili Safari | Zanzibar, Gorillas & More

You do not need to fly to Zanzibar to end your Tanzania trip with a beach. The Tanzanian coast north of Dar es Salaam โ€” Mafia Island, Kilwa, and the Saadani National Park coastline โ€” offers pristine beaches without the flight to Zanzibar. Mafia Island in particular is exceptional: whale sharks swim in the bay from October to March, diving is world-class, and the island has escaped the tourism development that Zanzibar has experienced. Saadani is unique in Africa โ€” a national park where you can see wildlife on a game drive and swim in the ocean from the same lodge.

Duration: 3-5 daysBest for: Beach lovers who want to stay in Tanzania, divers, naturalists

From

$624 per person

Highlight: Mafia Island, Saadani National Park, Kilwa Ruins

Some clients come back. They summit Kilimanjaro, feel the pull of the mountain again, and return months or years later to attempt a different route or to summit with a specific goal โ€” the full moon climb, the traverse, the Lemosho 8-day. We have had clients return four times. There is something about the mountain that stays with you. If you are considering returning, we recommend booking early โ€” our returning client programme prioritises dates for people who have already climbed with us.

Duration: 7-10 daysBest for: Those who felt the call, peak enthusiasts, those who did not summit first time

From

$1,560 per person

Highlight: Different route, return client discount, summit achievement

Common Questions

Can I add a Zanzibar extension to my Kilimanjaro safari combo?

Yes โ€” and we highly recommend it. Zanzibar is a 90-minute flight from Arusha. Most clients add 3-5 days after their safari. We can arrange the internal flight, airport transfers, and accommodation at Zanzibar as part of the same booking as your Kilimanjaro-safari combo โ€” one operator, one invoice, one point of contact throughout.

Is Rwanda gorilla trekking physically realistic after climbing Kilimanjaro?

The gorilla trek is challenging but not at altitude โ€” the treks are at 2,500-3,000m elevation, so altitude is not the limiting factor. The challenge is steep, muddy terrain on the volcanic slopes of the Virunga Mountains. If you have just completed a Kilimanjaro climb and are in general good physical condition, gorilla trekking is achievable. We recommend allowing at least two days between your safari end and the gorilla trek start โ€” this gives you time to rest and travel to Rwanda.

What is the most cost-effective extension after a Kili-safari combo?

A beach extension in Tanzania โ€” specifically Mafia Island or Saadani โ€” is typically the most cost-effective because you do not need an international flight. Zanzibar is more expensive during peak season (December-February) due to demand. Rwanda is the most expensive due to the cost of gorilla permits ($1,500 per person per day). Southern Tanzania (Ruaha/Selous) falls in the middle โ€” comparable in price to the northern circuit safari but offering completely different wildlife experiences.

Do I need separate visas for Rwanda and Zanzibar?

Tanzania and Rwanda both offer e-visas for most nationalities. If you are combining Tanzania (including Zanzibar) with Rwanda, you will need both a Tanzania visa and a Rwanda visa. The Tanzania visa covers entry to mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. The Rwanda visa covers entry to Rwanda. Both can be applied for online before departure. We provide full visa guidance as part of our pre-departure documentation.

Can I do the Southern Circuit after the Northern Circuit in one trip?

Yes โ€” it adds significant time (you need to fly from the Northern Circuit to the Southern Circuit, or drive โ€” it is a long journey by road) but it is doable in a 21-day itinerary: 7 days Kilimanjaro, 7 days Northern Circuit safari (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire), 4 days Southern Circuit (Ruaha or Selous), 3 days Zanzibar or travel. This is the comprehensive Tanzania itinerary โ€” the one that gives you everything.
