The Rest Day

Arusha Between Kilimanjaro and Safari โ€” Your Complete Rest Day Guide

Summit night is done. You have earned it. Now the question is: what do you do with the day between the mountain and the safari? Here is the honest guide.

Ask Kassim About the Rest Day

The rest day in Arusha between your Kilimanjaro climb and your safari is one of the most underestimated parts of the Kili + Safari combo. It is not a day to push yourself. It is a day to recover, prepare, and shift gears. Done well, it sets you up to arrive at your first game drive feeling genuinely present โ€” not exhausted, not still processing the mountain.

How to Spend Your Arusha Rest Day

Recovery first, light exploration second, preparation third.

Recovery and Rest

Your body has just been through something significant. Altitude, cold, physical exertion โ€” even if you feel fine on summit day, the recovery day is...

โ†’
Sleep in โ€” No alarm. Let your body decide when to wake.
โ†’
Hot shower โ€” The hot water and steam help clear the lungs and relax aching muscles.
โ†’
Massage โ€” Arusha has excellent massage therapists. A 60-minute deep tissue massage does wonders for summit recovery. Your operator can arrange one.
โ†’
Stay horizontal โ€” Read a book, watch something, nap. The safari starts tomorrow โ€” conserve your energy.

Light Exploration

If you feel good and want to do something light, Arusha and its surroundings offer several low-key activities that are very worthwhile โ€” and a plea...

โ†’
Coffee tour โ€” Arusha is surrounded by coffee plantations. A 2-hour tour at a nearby estate โ€” Tengeru or Usa River โ€” includes the full farm-to-cup experience and ends with a tasting. Fascinating and delicious.
โ†’
Cultural market visit โ€” The Masai Craft Market in Arusha town is overwhelming in the best way โ€” Masai blankets, carved wooden items, painted shields, jewellery. Bargaining is expected and enjoyable.
โ†’
Arusha Museum โ€” Small but well-curated. Exhibits on Tanzanian history, archaeology (Olduvai Gorge is nearby), and the cultures of northern Tanzania. A good 90-minute visit.
โ†’
Lake Duluti โ€” A small volcanic crater lake 20 minutes outside Arusha. Very peaceful, good for a short walk around the lake and birdwatching. Not a major commitment.

Safari Prep (Do Not Skip This)

Some things are worth doing on your rest day that will make the safari smoother. These are the practical tasks that are easy to overlook when you a...

โ†’
Charge all electronics โ€” Camera batteries, phone, power banks, headlamp. Safari camps have limited charging points โ€” start the safari with everything full.
โ†’
Wash up โ€” You have been in tents on a mountain for 6โ€“9 days. Use the laundry service at your Arusha hotel or find a local laundromat. Safari vehicles are enclosed โ€” you will be glad to be fresh.
โ†’
Repack for safari โ€” Your summit kit (down jacket, thermal layers, crampons) is not needed on safari. Pack these away and set out your safari clothing. Store the mountain gear separately โ€” you do not need it again on this trip.
โ†’
Confirm safari logistics โ€” Check in with your operator โ€” confirm tomorrow's departure time, what time the guide picks you up, whether you need anything for the day.
โ†’
Currency and cash โ€” ATM withdrawals in Arusha can be unreliable. Confirm you have enough Tanzanian shillings for tipping and personal purchases. USD is also widely accepted in tourist areas.

Good Food and Good Company

After the austere mountain diet, Arusha offers excellent food. The town has a genuinely cosmopolitan restaurant scene โ€” Indian, Italian, Swahili, E...

โ†’
Spice Garden โ€” Arusha's best Indian restaurant. The butter chicken is exceptional and the naan is baked in a tandoor. A complete contrast to mountain food.
โ†’
Mama Rolf's โ€” Swiss-run lodge with excellent German-Tanzanian cuisine. The schnitzel is legendary among Arusha regulars.
โ†’
Cafรฉ Brasserie โ€” Good coffee, excellent breakfasts, reliable European food in a pleasant garden setting.
โ†’
Tไฟฎไธบ Restaurant โ€” Authentic Tanzanian food โ€” ugali, nyama choma (grilled meat), mishikaki โ€” in a local setting. The best kind of authentic.

Rest Day Practical Tips

โ€ขDeparture time for most safaris is 7โ€“8am. If your hotel is not close to town, ask your operator if you should stay near the safari office tonight.
โ€ขArusha tap water is not reliably safe to drink. Drink bottled or filtered water as you recover โ€” your body has enough to process already.
โ€ขIf you are heading to the Southern Circuit (Ruaha, Selous) after the Northern Circuit, you will need an internal flight from Arusha. Confirm your flight time โ€” these depart from Arusha Airport (ARK), not JRO.
โ€ขAltitude symptoms can persist 24โ€“48 hours after descent. Headache, slight breathlessness, and fatigue are normal. If symptoms worsen significantly after arriving in Arusha, tell your operator immediately.
โ€ขMost safari operators in Arusha offer a day room at their office if your international flight departs late in the evening โ€” useful if you have a late-night flight out of JRO and want to freshen up before heading to the airport.

Rest Day Questions

Can I skip the Arusha rest day and go straight to safari after Kilimanjaro?

Technically yes โ€” and some operators offer this as an option. We do not recommend it. Summit night is the most physically demanding thing most people have ever done. Driving directly into safari (which involves early starts, bumpy roads, and sun exposure) on zero sleep and peak exhaustion is not just uncomfortable โ€” it is unsafe. The rest day is also when your guide briefs you on safari logistics, you repack, and you mentally transition from climber to safari traveller. Think of it as part of the trip, not dead time.

What hotel should I stay in on the rest day?

For the rest day, comfort matters more than location. We use the Safari Lodge, Ilboru Safari Lodge, or Arusha Coffee Lodge depending on availability. All have hot water, good beds, and restaurant food. If you are coming off the mountain and feeling rough, do not skimp on this night โ€” a proper hotel makes a significant difference to how you feel on safari day one.

I feel great after the summit. Can I be active on the rest day?

If you genuinely feel good and the altitude symptoms are minimal, a light activity is fine โ€” the coffee tour, market visit, or Arusha Museum are all easy on this day. Avoid anything strenuous: no hiking, no running, no swimming in cold crater lakes. The risk of post-exertion fatigue is real, and you do not want to arrive at your first game drive feeling depleted.

What if I have altitude sickness symptoms after coming down?

Minor symptoms โ€” slight headache, mild breathlessness, fatigue โ€” are normal and resolve within 24โ€“48 hours as your body adjusts to lower altitude. Rest, hydrate, and avoid exertion. If symptoms are severe (confusion, vomiting, chest tightness, symptoms worsening after 48 hours), tell your operator immediately โ€” this requires medical evaluation, not just rest.

Do I need new clothes for safari or can I use my Kili gear?

You need different clothing for safari. Kili gear is designed for cold, dry, high-altitude conditions. Safari clothing needs to be light, breathable, and in neutral bush colours (khaki, tan, olive โ€” no white or bright colours). Your Kili down jacket is not needed on safari. Your base layers and thermal underwear can be repurposed for early morning game drives in colder months (Juneโ€“August). Your summit fleece is not needed. Set aside a small bag for your Kili gear and store it at your Arusha hotel โ€” you will not need it again on this trip.

What time should I book my international flight out on safari end day?

Most safari itineraries return to Arusha by 4โ€“5pm on the final safari day. If you are flying internationally from JRO (Kilimanjaro Airport), book a flight that departs no earlier than 9pm on that day โ€” 10pm or later is safer. This gives buffer if game drives run late or if there is road traffic on the return to Arusha. If you are flying from Dar es Salaam, book an early evening flight out of Arusha and a connecting flight from DAR.

One operator handles everything โ€” mountain logistics, Arusha rest day, safari. No handoffs, no coordination, no confusion.
