Arusha β The City Before the Adventure
Everything you need to know about Tanzania's safari gateway β altitude, acclimatisation, logistics, and why Arusha matters more than you think.
Most safaris start in Arusha. Most travellers underestimate it.
Arusha is a small Tanzanian city at the foot of Mount Meru, 90 minutes from Kilimanjaro International Airport and the gateway to Tanzania's northern safari circuit. Most travellers pass through it quickly β a night or two before heading to the mountain or the Serengeti β and miss what makes it genuinely interesting.
The city sits at 1,400 metres above sea level. That altitude matters: if you are flying into JRO direct from sea level, spending 24β48 hours in Arusha before starting your Kilimanjaro climb is the single most effective thing you can do to aid acclimatisation. The city is also the last point of genuine logistics before the mountain β your kit check, briefing, and guide meeting all happen here.
This guide covers what Arusha is, what it is not, and how to use it strategically for your combined Kilimanjaro and safari trip.

Why Altitude Matters
Arusha Altitude: Your First Acclimatisation Step
Flying directly from sea level to Kilimanjaro's Machame Gate (1,800m) and starting the climb the same day is one of the most common mistakes made by travellers. Altitude sickness affects 75% of Kilimanjaro climbers to some degree, and acute symptoms are significantly more common in those who ascend too quickly.
Arusha's altitude of 1,400m is not high enough to cause problems β but it is high enough to begin the physiological adaptation process. Spending 24β48 hours at 1,400m before ascending to Machame Gate (1,800m) gives your body time to produce more red blood cells and adjust to reduced oxygen pressure. On a 7β8 day Lemosho or Machame climb, this preparation makes a measurable difference to summit success rates.
We recommend all our Kilimanjaro climbers spend at least one night in Arusha before starting the climb β and two nights if your international flight arrives in the afternoon or evening.

How to Spend Your Time in Arusha
Arusha Tanzania Gateway | Pre-Safari Preparation
Tanzanian coffee β particularly from the slopes of Kilimanjaro and Meru β is exceptional. Several cooperatives near Arusha offer tours where you can walk the fields, see the processing, and taste the result. A 2-hour coffee tour is one of the most enjoyable half-day activities in the Arusha region.
Arusha Tanzania Gateway | Pre-Safari Preparation
Mount Meru (4,566m) is Tanzania's second-highest peak and an extraordinary acclimatisation hike before Kilimanjaro. A 3β4 day Meru climb burns acclimatisation dividend for Kili β hikers arrive at Machame Gate in far better shape than if they had rested completely. Talk to us about combining Meru and Kilimanjaro.
Arusha Tanzania Gateway | Pre-Safari Preparation
Arusha's Central Market and the Maasai Cultural Tourism Program offer genuine insight into local Maasai and Arusha culture. The programme connects visitors with Maasai communities outside the city for village visits, dance performances, and guided walks β a meaningful complement to the wildlife experience ahead.
Arusha Tanzania Gateway | Pre-Safari Preparation
Arusha's outdoor shops stock most of the climbing and safari gear you might need at prices significantly lower than at home. Questions & Answers
Arusha β Before You Arrive
Why do I need to spend time in Arusha before Kilimanjaro?+
Arusha sits at 1,400 metres β altitude high enough to begin acclimatisation but low enough to cause no problems. Flying into Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) and starting the climb the same day is one of the most common mistakes climbers make. Altitude sickness affects 75% of Kilimanjaro climbers to some degree. Spending 24-48 hours in Arusha before ascending to Machame Gate gives your body a critical head start. We include at least one Arusha night in every Kili itinerary we build.
How far is Arusha from Kilimanjaro Airport?+
Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is 55 kilometres from Arusha city centre β approximately 90 minutes by road. We arrange all airport transfers as part of every booking. Many travellers fly into JRO in the afternoon or evening and assume they will start the mountain immediately β in practice this means arriving in Arusha, going to sleep at altitude, and starting the climb the next morning. We strongly recommend at least one full night in Arusha before the climb.
What is there to do in Arusha on a rest day?+
More than most travellers expect. The coffee plantation tours near Arusha are excellent β Tanzanian coffee from Kilimanjaro and Meru slopes is among the world's best. The Maasai Cultural Tourism Programme offers half-day village visits with genuine cultural exchange. For those climbing Kilimanjaro, a Mount Meru acclimatisation hike (3-4 days) burns exceptional altitude dividend for the Kili climb. Arusha's outdoor shops also stock most climbing and safari gear at lower prices than at home.
Can I do a safari from Arusha?+
Yes. Arusha is the natural departure point for the Northern Circuit. Tarangire National Park is 90 minutes from Arusha, making it an ideal first or last safari day. Ngorongoro Crater is 3-4 hours from Arusha. Most combined Kili-safari itineraries begin or end with a night in Arusha, using it as a comfortable base for the transition between mountain and wildlife.
Is Arusha safe for travellers?+
Like any medium-sized African city, Arusha has areas that are better to avoid and areas that are perfectly safe. The tourist-friendly central area, around the Clock Tower andεΈεΊ area, is well-policed and comfortable for visitors. We advise standard urban precautions β no displaying valuables, avoiding isolated areas after dark β which apply equally to any unfamiliar city. Our guests are met at the airport and looked after throughout their Arusha stay.
What should I buy in Arusha before the climb?+
The outdoor shops in Arusha stock most climbing essentials at significantly lower prices than in Europe or North America. Key items to check: quality gloves and liner socks (the most common cold injuries on Kili come from inadequate hand and foot insulation), base layers, water bottles and purification tablets, headlamp batteries, and rehydration salts. Your guide will do a full kit check on the first morning in Arusha and note anything that needs supplementing.
How long should I stay in Arusha after summiting Kilimanjaro?+
One night is standard between the mountain and the safari. After summitting and descending (typically arriving back in Arusha by mid-afternoon on Day 8 of a Lemosho itinerary), we arrange a comfortable lodge, a hot meal, and a long shower. By the following morning you are ready for the safari. For clients doing longer Southern Circuit or Zanzibar extensions, Arusha works as a brief re-entry point between the mountain and the next stage.
