Highlight
Best for: Great Migration, predator action, classic African landscape
Best Months
December–March (calving), July–October (river crossings), Year-round resident wildlife
Drive from Arusha
4–5 hours from Arusha (or fly-in to Seronera/Kogatende)
Days Recommended
2–5 days depending on season and interests
Key Wildlife
Our Verdict
Essential for first-time safari travellers. The Serengeti defines the Tanzania safari experience.

Elephant highways and baobab plains
Tarangire National Park
Tarangire is the most elephant-dense national park in Africa — herds of 50–300 elephants are common. The park is also famous for its ancient baobab trees, its large buffalo herds, and its variety of bird species (550+ recorded). It is the most scenically distinctive of Tanzania's northern circuit parks.
Highlight
Best for: Elephant herds, birdwatching, photography, quieter than Serengeti
Best Months
June–October (dry season concentrations), Year-round
Drive from Arusha
2 hours from Arusha
Days Recommended
1 day (pairs perfectly with Ngorongoro as a 2-day combo)
Key Wildlife
Our Verdict
Tarangire is the perfect complement to Ngorongoro — different landscape, different wildlife focus. Highly recommended as a first day's safari after the mountain.

The pink fringe of Africa's Great Rift Valley
Lake Manyara National Park
Lake Manyara is one of Tanzania's smaller parks but one of its most diverse. The alkaline lake attracts thousands of flamingos; the groundwater forest is home to blue monkeys and olive baboons; the acacia woodland holds lion (famous for tree-climbing) and elephant. A half-day is sufficient, making it an ideal add-on to Ngorongoro.
Highlight
Best for: Flamingos, tree-climbing lions, birdwatching, short additional drive
Best Months
Year-round, best flamingos June–September
Drive from Arusha
1.5 hours from Arusha (or on route from Ngorongoro)
Days Recommended
Half day (add-on to Ngorongoro or as final morning)
Key Wildlife
Our Verdict
A half-day add-on, not a destination in itself. Ideal as the final morning before returning to Arusha/JRO. Most clients combine it with Ngorongoro.

Remote, wild, and utterly different
Nyerere National Park
Formerly Selous, Nyerere National Park is one of the largest protected areas in Africa — larger than Switzerland. It offers a fundamentally differe...
Highlight
Best for: Remote wilderness, wild dog, boat safari, walking safari, off-the-beaten-path
Best Months
July–October (dry season, easiest access)
Drive from Arusha
6+ hours from Arusha or fly-in from Dar es Salaam
Days Recommended
3–5 days minimum (remote, requires flight or long drive)
Key Wildlife
Our Verdict
Nyerere requires extending your trip to 3+ weeks and is best combined with the northern circuit as a add-on, or as the sole safari destination for Tanzania connoisseurs who have done the northern circuit before.
Safari After Kilimanjaro — FAQs
Which safari park should I visit after Kilimanjaro?
Ngorongoro Crater is non-negotiable — every Kilimanjaro combo itinerary should include it. After that, the Serengeti is the second essential park for first-time safari travellers. Tarangire is the ideal first-day safari after the mountain — closer to Arusha, different landscape, excellent elephants. Most 14-day combos include all three. Lake Manyara is a half-day add-on that works as a final morning before departure.
Can I see the Great Migration after climbing Kilimanjaro?
Yes — but timing matters. The Great Migration river crossings (the dramatic part) happen July through October. If you climb Kilimanjaro during these months, you can arrange your safari to be in the northern Serengeti for active crossings. The calving season (February–March) offers a different but equally compelling migration experience. A 14-day combo in July or August gives you both the summit and the crossings.
How many safari days do I need after Kilimanjaro?
Minimum: 2 days — Ngorongoro Crater (full day) plus one other park. Comfortable: 3–4 days — add Tarangire and the Serengeti properly. Extended: 5+ days — northern circuit plus optional add-on of Lake Manyara or Nyerere National Park. The more days you allocate to the safari, the more you will see and the less rushed the experience will feel.
Should I safari before or after climbing Kilimanjaro?
After. Almost without exception. Climbing Kilimanjaro is physically demanding and exposes you to high altitude. Attempting the mountain post-safari — when you are already fatigued and potentially carrying a cold or minor illness from airport/camp exposure — increases your altitude illness risk significantly. Safari first is acceptable only for very short 10-day combinations where the safari is minimal and the climb is the priority.
I have limited time — which parks are essential?
Ngorongoro Crater + one other park. Ngorongoro alone can deliver the Big Five (rhino, lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard) in a single game drive — it is the most wildlife-dense square kilometre in Africa. Adding Tarangire gives you the elephant experience and completely different photography opportunities. This 2-park, 2-day combination is the minimum viable safari after Kilimanjaro.
What about Zanzibar — can I add it to a Kilimanjaro climb and safari?
Yes. Zanzibar is an excellent add-on for clients doing 16+ day trips. The combination is: Kilimanjaro climb, 1-day Arusha rest, 4-day northern circuit safari, then fly to Zanzibar for 3–5 days of beach recovery. The contrast — Kilimanjaro's physical challenge, the Serengeti's wildlife theatre, Zanzibar's Indian Ocean beaches — makes for an extraordinary complete Tanzania experience.
