Best Time for
Kili + Safari Combo
Month-by-month guide to climbing Kilimanjaro and doing a Tanzania safari together. Weather, wildlife, crowds, and our honest verdict for each month of the year.
The Short Answer
September, October, January, and February are the best months for the Kili + Safari combo.
The mountain and the safari have different peak seasons — the dry season (June–October) is best for Kilimanjaro, while the Great Migration creates exceptional wildlife drama from December through March. The overlap windows — January/February and September/October — give you the best of both worlds. Fly camping in the Serengeti is only possible during the dry season, making June–October the ideal window to combine a Kili climb with a fly camping safari night under the stars. See our fly camping guide.

Questions
Frequently Asked
What is the best month for a Kilimanjaro + Safari combo?
September and October offer the best balance of excellent conditions on both the mountain and safari, with lower crowds and better availability than peak months. January and February are equally excellent for wildlife (calving season), though crowded on Kili. July and August give peak conditions but with peak prices and crowds. April is the only month we actively recommend avoiding the combo.
Is the Kilimanjaro + Safari combo available year-round?
Technically yes — we operate the combo every month of the year. Practically, April is the one month we recommend against it due to heavy rain making mountain trails dangerous. The long rainy season (April-May) creates difficult conditions on the mountain even though safari parks remain accessible. May can work on a case-by-case basis as rains taper.
What is the Great Migration and when does it happen?
The Great Migration is the annual movement of 1.5 million wildebeest across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. The cycle: calving (January-March) in southern Serengeti, moving north (April-June), river crossings at the Mara River (July-October), moving south (November-December). For a Kili + Safari combo, July-October offers the most dramatic wildlife viewing — the river crossings are one of nature's most extraordinary spectacles.
Are prices higher during peak season?
Yes. Peak season (July–October, December–February) carries a 15–25% premium on both Kilimanjaro climbs and safari packages due to demand. The best value windows are June and November — just before and just after peak, with excellent conditions and lower prices. April offers the lowest prices of the year but with significant weather trade-offs.
Can I do the combo during the green season?
You can, but it requires flexibility. Green season (November, March–May) means lower prices, lusher landscapes, extraordinary birding, and dramatically fewer crowds. The trade-offs are muddy mountain trails, occasional rain during game drives, and less predictable conditions. For experienced hikers comfortable with variable conditions, green season offers exceptional value.
How far in advance should I book for peak season?
For June–September departures, book at least 3–4 months ahead for the mountain and 2–3 months for safari camps. For December–February, book 4–6 months ahead — this is peak holiday season and camps fill early. Kili park permits (required) are allocated on a first-come basis and popular months sell out. Last-minute bookings in peak season often find nothing available.
