Best Time for the Kilimanjaro Safari Combo
Month-by-month guide to combining the mountain and safari โ conditions, crowds, and what to expect.
The Kilimanjaro-safari combo is a year-round trip โ but some months are significantly better than others. The mountain and the safari have different seasonal rhythms, and the best combo months are those where both experiences are at or near their peak.
This guide covers all twelve months. We are honest about trade-offs โ there is no perfect month that excels at everything. But there are clear winners depending on your priorities: wildlife spectacle, climbing conditions, crowd avoidance, or budget.

Our Top Recommendations
Best Overall: September
September offers the ideal combination of excellent mountain conditions and strong safari wildlife viewing. The northern Serengeti migration crossings continue (typically through mid-September), crowds are lower than July-August, and pricing has eased from peak. This is our most frequently recommended month for the combo.
Best Wildlife: January-February
The Ndutu calving season offers some of the most dramatic wildlife viewing in Africa โ wildebeest births, predator action, spectacular photography. Combined with excellent dry-season climbing conditions, this is the best choice for wildlife-focused travelers who can tolerate moderate crowds.
Best Value: March-May
Safari-only in the green season delivers exceptional value โ empty parks, spectacular landscapes, budget-friendly lodges. Note: April-May are NOT suitable for Kilimanjaro. If you want to combine both in this window, June is your best option.
Best Peak Experience: July-August
For travelers prioritizing maximum wildlife density and optimal mountain conditions above all else, July-August delivers. Accept the crowds and premium pricing โ the experience is genuinely extraordinary if you book 8+ months ahead.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best month for the Kilimanjaro-safari combo?
September and early October are our recommended sweet spot for the combo โ excellent mountain conditions, the migration crossings are typically still happening in the northern Serengeti, crowds are lower than peak season, and pricing is more reasonable. January-February is also excellent for those who want the Ndutu calving spectacle. Avoid April-May entirely for the mountain portion.
Can I climb Kilimanjaro during the rainy season?
Technically yes โ you can climb in April and May, but we do not recommend it. Trail conditions are poor (muddy, slippery, some route sections flooded), visibility can be limited, and the risk of not reaching the summit is significantly higher. If you must climb during the green season, September-October is more manageable than April-May.
Is the combo more expensive during peak season?
Yes โ December through March and July through September are peak pricing periods. The delta is significant: mountain route fees, safari lodge pricing, and flight availability all increase during these windows. The best value months are March, May-June, October, and November โ though some of these months have trade-offs in mountain conditions.
What is the crowd situation on Kilimanjaro during peak season?
July-September is peak on the mountain. Popular routes (Machame, Marangu) can feel crowded โ you may share camps with dozens of other climbers, and the summit trail on summit night can have a queue of headlamps. The quieter routes are Lemosho (still popular but less so than Machame) and Rongai (least crowded northern approach). The Northern Circuit is the most exclusive option with the highest success rates.
Is the safari crowded in July and August?
Yes โ July and August are the busiest months in the northern Serengeti. The concentration of wildlife is extraordinary, but so is the concentration of safari vehicles. The Mara River crossing points can have dozens of vehicles waiting. For a less crowded experience, consider the western corridor (Grumeti) or the southern circuit (Ruaha, Selous) during these months.
When should I book for peak season?
For July-September departures, book at least 6 months in advance โ 8-12 months for the most popular camps and route options. For December-January, book 8-10 months in advance as these dates fill fastest. The mountain permits, camp availability, and safari lodge availability all need to be secured early.
Can I do the combo in the green season?
Yes โ but with conditions. For the mountain portion: September-October is manageable, April-May is not recommended. For the safari portion: green season safari is genuinely excellent โ the landscapes are beautiful, birding is exceptional, and the parks are empty. The trade-off is that some roads may be less accessible and some camps may be closed. Safari-only green season trips are excellent value.
What weather should I expect on the mountain vs. safari?
On Kilimanjaro: temperatures range from +20C at base to -20C at the summit, with strong winds on the crater rim. The lower rainforest zone is hot and humid; the alpine desert is dry and cold. On safari: temperatures are warm to hot (25-35C) during the day, cool (10-20C) at dawn game drives. Ngorongoro Crater can be cold at sunrise (5-10C). Rain is possible in any month but more common in the green season.
