The Experience
What to Expect on a Balloon Safari
1. Early morning pick-up
You will be collected from your camp before sunrise — typically around 5:30am. The pre-dawn start is non-negotiable: balloon flights operate in the early morning when air conditions are calmest and most stable. The drive to the launch site takes 30-45 minutes, often through the park in darkness — your guide will have a briefing about what to expect.
2. Safety briefing
At the launch site, your pilot will give a comprehensive safety briefing. This covers: how to enter and exit the basket, what to do during takeoff and landing, what happens if conditions change, and what to do in the unlikely event of an emergency landing. Balloon flights are extremely safe — but the briefing is thorough and professional.
3. The inflation
Watching a hot-air balloon being inflated is part of the experience. The burner fires, hot air fills the envelope, and the balloon rises from flat to full over approximately 20 minutes. You will be inside or beside the basket during inflation — this is an excellent photographic opportunity from the ground.
4. Takeoff
Takeoff is gentle — the balloon rises smoothly from the ground. You may feel a brief sensation of lift as you leave the earth. Once airborne, the experience is serene: the basket drifts with the wind, there is no engine noise, and conversation is easy. The pilot controls altitude using the burner to heat the air inside the envelope.
5. The flight
For approximately one hour, you drift silently over the Serengeti plains. The perspective is extraordinary: the landscape opens up below you in a way that no vehicle can replicate. Wildebeest herds appear as moving shadows. Elephants look like dark dots. Lions are visible as they patrol their territory. The pilot will narrate what you are seeing and adjust altitude to get the best views. You can photograph freely — there is no vibration or engine noise to contend with.
6. Landing
Landing is typically gentle — the pilot will aim for a clear area and bring the balloon in to land on the basket base. You will need to brace as the basket touches down, then stand still until the pilot confirms the balloon is secured. After landing, you will help with packing the balloon — this is part of the adventure.
7. Champagne breakfast
The bush breakfast is served at the landing site — a table set under an acacia tree, with a full cooked breakfast, pastries, fruit, juice, and sparkling wine. This is one of the most memorable meals of your life: eating eggs and bacon in the African bush, having just drifted silently over the Serengeti at sunrise. What You See From the Balloon
Wildebeest
The Great Migration is visible from the air as moving patterns — hundreds of thousands of individuals appearing as dark patches on the plains. The scale of the migration is apparent from above in a way that is impossible to grasp from the ground.
Elephants
Elephant herds are visible as slow-moving dark shapes. From above, you can track their movement and direction. The contrast between their tiny appearance from 300 metres and the reality of animals weighing several tonnes is striking.
Lions
Lions are often visible from the air — particularly in the early morning when they are most active. A pride of lions seen from above, spread across the grass, is a distinctive and memorable sight.
Giraffes
Giraffes' distinctive shape makes them easy to spot from above. Their movement is slow and deliberate — watching a giraffe walk from 300 metres is a reminder of how differently they inhabit the landscape compared to humans.
The landscape
Perhaps the most compelling view from the balloon is the landscape itself — the river corridors, the kopjes, the gradient of colour from green to golden grass, the distance between water sources. From above, the Serengeti's ecological logic becomes visible.

Balloon flights are subject to weather conditions — the pilot will not fly if conditions are unsafe. The main risk is weather: flights may be cancelled or delayed if winds are too strong or visibility is poor. The operator will reschedule or refund if a flight is cancelled.
What is the best time of year for a balloon safari?
