This is the single most important nutritional intervention for post-climb recovery. With muscle protein catabolism active for five to seven days, adequate protein intake is the primary lever for recovery speed. Eggs, beef, beans, and dairy are all effective. A 75kg climber needs 120–150g of protein per day — roughly three times the normal recommended intake, achievable with two eggs at breakfast, a large portion of meat or beans at lunch, and a dairy-rich dinner.
Carbohydrate Reload — Glycogen Depletion Impairs Cognition
The brain runs on glucose. Glycogen depletion after summit night impairs cognitive function, mood, and decision-making — on top of the altitude effects. Prioritise complex carbohydrates: sweet potato, rice, ugali, bread, pasta. Avoid relying on refined sugars for the bulk of your carb intake — they cause rapid blood sugar spikes and crashes that compound fatigue rather than resolving it.
Hydration — 3+ Litres on Day 1 Post-Climb
Rehydration on the mountain is never complete. On Day 1 post-climb, drink a minimum of three litres of water in addition to your normal intake. More if you are still at altitude or the weather is warm. Electrolytes — Sodium, Potassium, Magnesium
Summit day involves heavy sweating in sub-zero temperatures — paradoxical but true, because the physical exertion generates significant metabolic heat and the wind strips moisture rapidly. Sodium and potassium losses are substantial. Electrolyte tablets or powder added to water are more effective than plain water for rehydration in the first 24 hours. Magnesium is particularly important for sleep quality in the recovery period — it supports the parasympathetic nervous system and helps with the REM rebound that is essential for full cognitive recovery.
Supplement Considerations
Electrolyte tablets (non-negotiable on Day 1), omega-3 capsules (genuine anti-inflammatory benefit for the muscle soreness phase), and vitamin D (limited sun exposure on the mountain plus sunscreen use reduces synthesis significantly) are the three supplements with the clearest evidence base for post-Kili recovery. A general multi-vitamin covers micronutrient gaps from the high-carb mountain diet. No supplement replaces actual food.

Sleep Strategy — Getting Quality Rest After the Mountain
Most climbers oversleep on the first night off the mountain — ten to fourteen hours is not unusual. This is compensatory sleep, driven by the sleep debt accumulated over six nights at altitude, and it is the body doing the right thing. However, this sleep is not fully restorative. REM cycles are still disrupted, and the second night is frequently worse than the first as the body continues recalibrating.
Sleep architecture takes three to four nights to fully normalise. During this window, do not plan intense activity on Days 1 and 2 post-climb. The Arusha hotel should prioritise a quiet, air-conditioned room — not for luxury, but because consistent temperature and darkness are prerequisites for proper REM cycling.
Alcohol impairs REM rebound. This is not theoretical — it is well-documented in sleep literature. One or two drinks after the climb may feel like a celebration, but they meaningfully reduce the quality of the sleep recovery you need most. Save the celebration until Day 3.
Strategic napping works. Twenty-minute naps on Day 2 and Day 3 post-climb improve cognitive recovery without disrupting night sleep architecture — provided they end before 3pm, so as not to delay night sleep onset. The best time for a post-climb nap is after lunch, when post-prandial sleepiness peaks anyway.

When to Start Your Safari — Day 1 vs Day 2 vs Day 3
Day 1 Post-Climb — Rest Is Non-Negotiable
Arusha rest is not optional. Arrive at the hotel by 11am, sleep two to three hours in the early afternoon, eat a full meal, and rest again. Your body is running on stress hormones that are dropping fast, and the first 24 hours off the mountain are about stabilising, not optimising. Any operator who starts a game drive on the afternoon of descent is doing it wrong.
Day 2 Post-Climb — Light Activity Only
A short village walk, a market visit, or a relaxed lunch at a cultural site — this is the correct Day 2 activity. It keeps blood flowing to recovering muscle tissue, gets you outdoors in fresh air, and breaks the psychological monotony of rest without demanding anything physical. Day 3 Post-Climb — Physically Ready for Full Safari Days
By Day 3, sleep debt has been partially addressed, muscle catabolism is beginning to reverse, and altitude acclimatisation has fully reversed. Full-day game drives are manageable and enjoyable. This is why the standard Lemosho or Northern Circuit combo — summit on Day 9 of the climb, first game drive on Day 11 or 12 — is physiologically correct. The spacing is not arbitrary. It is the optimal recovery window.
Emergency Reversal Protocol
If summit day takes longer than planned — you summit on Day 10 instead of Day 9 — add an extra Arusha rest day rather than compressing the safari. The rule: the safari always adjusts to the climber's recovery state, never the other way around. We have never had a client regret adding a rest day.
