Best Time for a Kilimanjaro Safari Combo — Month-by-Month
There is no single "best month" for a Kilimanjaro + safari combo. The answer depends on what you are optimising for: summit probability, wildlife spectacle, crowd levels, or budget. This guide gives you the complete picture for every month of the year.
Every month has trade-offs. January is spectacular for wildlife but busy. April is cheap and beautiful but not climbable. September is our most recommended month for the mountain. December is magical but peak-priced. Here is what 47 years of combined guiding tells us.
Quick answer: September offers the best balance — excellent mountain conditions, strong wildlife, moderate crowds, and good value. October is excellent for climbers who want easier booking. January and February are ideal for wildlife photographers.
The Two Seasons
Peak Season — June to October
Dry weather, highest summit success rates, best wildlife concentration. Peak prices and crowding.
Green Season — November to May
Lower prices, fewer crowds, dramatic landscapes. Some rain disruption on mountain and safari roads. Not recommended for first-time climbers.
Month-by-Month Breakdown
January
Best all-round month. Warm days, wildlife spectacular, dry trails on Kili.
On the Mountain
Machame and Lemosho routes are in excellent condition. Northern Circuit is accessible. Summit success rates are high. Clear mornings and moderate temperatures on the mountain.
In the Safari
The short-grass plains of Ndutu and the southern Serengeti are thick with wildebeest calves — January is peak predator viewing. Excellent lion, cheetah, and hyena action. Ngorongoro Crater is lush and productive.
February
Extension of January's excellent conditions. Best for photographers.
On the Mountain
Similar to January. The mountain is dry and clear. The Machame and Lemosho routes are in prime condition. February nights on the mountain are cold but not extreme.
In the Safari
Wildebeest calving continues in the southern plains through mid-February. Predator action remains very high. After mid-February, the herds begin moving north toward the central Serengeti.
March
Budget option. Lush landscapes but rainy mountain trails.
On the Mountain
The long rains begin in March. Trails become muddy and slippery, especially on Lemosho and Machame's lower sections. Summit success rates drop. Rongai route is less affected as it is on the drier north side. Not recommended for first-timers.
In the Safari
Green season safaris offer spectacular photography — dramatic skies, green landscapes, newborn antelope everywhere. Fewer tourists. Great prices. Some roads in parks become difficult. Birding is exceptional.
April
Not recommended for the mountain. Safari still excellent.
On the Mountain
Full long rains. Machame and Lemosho trails are treacherous. Summit attempts are not advisable. We do not operate scheduled climbs in April. If you have flexibility, postpone to May or wait for the dry season.
In the Safari
April is the quietest safari month. Lush, green, dramatic. Wildlife is still excellent — the parks are less crowded and prices are at their lowest. Photographers love the dramatic light and green landscapes.
May
Transitional month. Late May is better for both.
On the Mountain
Early May is still wet. By late May the short rains sometimes begin and the trails start drying. Lemosho's western approach stays muddy longer. Rongai is the most reliable option if climbing in May. Summit success rates are lower than dry season.
In the Safari
May is quiet. The parks are green and beautiful, and the game viewing is moderate — animals are well-distributed and not concentrated around water. Fewer tourists and good prices.
June
Dry season begins. Peak overall conditions for both.
On the Mountain
The dry season starts. Trails are firm, skies are clear, and temperatures on the mountain are ideal. June is one of the best months for climbing Kilimanjaro. Summit success rates are high. Cold on the summit at night but clear and stable.
In the Safari
The long rains have ended. The herds move into the western Serengeti and Grumeti area. The landscape is still green from the rains. Excellent wildlife viewing. Ngorongoro Crater is spectacular. Tourist numbers increase toward mid-month.
July
Best combined experience if you can handle the crowds.
On the Mountain
July is peak climbing season. The mountain is in excellent condition. Clear skies, firm trails, and high summit success rates. However, the mountain is busy — you will see other groups on the popular routes. Book 3–4 months in advance.
In the Safari
The wildebeest migration reaches the Mara River in the northern Serengeti. Spectacular river crossings — thousands of animals plunging into the crocodile-infested waters. Northern Serengeti is exceptional but very crowded.
August
Prime for both. Peak prices and advance booking essential.
On the Mountain
August continues the excellent conditions of July. The summit night is cold — expect -15°C or below at Uhuru Peak — but the skies are clear and the views are extraordinary. Mountain is at maximum occupancy. Book as early as possible.
In the Safari
The migration is at its peak in the northern Serengeti. The Mara River crossings continue. This is the most wildlife-dense time of year in Tanzania. It is also the most expensive and the most crowded. Worth it if you can secure bookings.
September
A favourite month. Animals moving south, mountain still dry.
On the Mountain
September is our most recommended month for climbing Kilimanjaro. The dry season is holding, the trails are in excellent condition, and the mountain is slightly less crowded than July–August. Temperature at the summit is cold but stable. One of the highest summit success months of the year.
In the Safari
The migration herds begin moving south from the Mara River area. The northern Serengeti is still exceptional in early September. Ngorongoro Crater is excellent year-round. September offers great conditions without the absolute peak crowds of August.
October
Excellent for Kili. Safari conditions good with green return.
On the Mountain
Early October maintains the dry season conditions. By late October the short rains begin — brief afternoon showers that do not significantly affect trail conditions. Lemosho and Machame are still very good. Summit success rates remain high. October is an excellent value month.
In the Safari
The short rains return in October, bringing green flushes to the Serengeti. The landscape transforms quickly from brown to vivid green. Wildlife is still excellent and more dispersed. Fewer tourists and better prices than peak season. A wonderful month for a safari.
November
Budget gem. Short rains are brief and do not ruin the experience.
On the Mountain
The short rains bring brief afternoon showers, mainly on the mountain's southern slopes. Lemosho and Machame are usable but trails are occasionally muddy. Rongai is more reliable. The mountain is quiet and the experience is more private. Summit success rates are moderate.
In the Safari
November is the start of the green season's second act. The short rains are brief and typically occur in the afternoon or overnight — they do not interrupt game drives. The landscape turns green rapidly. Predator action picks up as antelope begin calving toward the end of the month.
December
Festive peak. Book well in advance and expect higher prices.
On the Mountain
December starts with excellent climbing conditions — dry trails, clear skies. The Christmas–New Year period brings maximum crowding and premium pricing. The mountain is busy from summit to gate. If booking for late December, confirm your climb 4–5 months ahead.
In the Safari
December marks the return of the wildebeest calving season in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu. The wildlife action is spectacular — one of the best times of year for predator viewing. Ngorongoro is always excellent. Festive season pricing applies.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cheapest month for a Kilimanjaro safari combo?
April and May are the cheapest months. This is the deep green season — lodge prices drop significantly, some operators offer discounts, and the parks are very quiet. The main trade-off is that the mountain is not safe for first-timers in April (full long rains). May is marginal. For budget without sacrificing mountain safety, November offers a good middle ground.
Can I climb Kilimanjaro during the rainy season?
Yes, but with important caveats. The Rongai route (approaching from the north) is more reliable in the rainy season as it is on the drier side of the mountain. However, we do not recommend the popular Machame and Lemosho routes during April, as the trails become hazardous. Green season climbing is for experienced hikers only. Budget 2–3 extra days of flexibility in case of weather disruptions.
What month has the best chance of seeing the wildebeest migration?
The migration is present in the Serengeti year-round — it is a continuous circuit of approximately 1.5 million wildebeest. The most spectacular moments are: river crossings at the Mara River (July–September) and the calving in Ndutu/Southern Serengeti (January–February). If you specifically want to witness crossings, August is the best single month. For calving, January.
Is September better than July for climbing Kilimanjaro?
Yes, for most climbers. September offers the same dry-season trail conditions as July–August but with fewer climbers on the mountain, slightly better value pricing, and just as high summit success rates. The only advantage of July–August is that the northern Serengeti migration is at its absolute peak — but Ngorongoro and the central Serengeti are excellent in September too.
What is the best time for a Kilimanjaro climb combined with a safari on the Northern Serengeti?
July through early October. The Northern Serengeti (Kogatende area) is where the migration herds concentrate from July when they enter from the Mara River, through September as they graze southward. For the most dramatic combination — Kilimanjaro summit with Northern Serengeti migration — we recommend the 10-day or 14-day Lemosho + Northern Serengeti itinerary, departing late August or early September.
