The Lemosho Route

8 days climbing, 7 nights on the mountain — the highest summit success rate of any route

Duration

8 Days

Summit Rate

~95%

Difficulty

Moderate

Crowds

Low–Moderate

Lemosho approaches Kilimanjaro from the west — the least crowded approach for the first few days, crossing the Shira Plateau with views of the volcano that no other route can match. The longer 8-day itinerary gives your body more time to acclimatise, which is why Lemosho consistently achieves the highest summit success rates on the mountain.

This is the route we recommend for guests who have the time and want to maximise their summit probability. The extra days on the mountain are not luxury — they are the difference between reaching the summit and turning back at 5,000 metres.

Day by Day — Mountain

1

Arrival in Arusha

Meet our team at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Transfer to your Arusha hotel. Kit check with your mountain guide, route briefing, and dinner with the crew.

2

Lemosho Gate → Mti Mkulwa (Big Tree Camp)

drive to Lemosho Gate. Registration and first day through lush rainforest. Arrive at Big Tree Camp (~2,800m) by mid-afternoon. Gentle introduction to altitude.

3

Big Tree Camp → Shira Camp 1

continue through moorland. Views of the Shira Plateau open up. Arrive at Shira Camp 1 (~3,600m) by early afternoon — your first high-altitude camp.

4

Shira Camp 1 → Shira Cathedral → Barranco Camp

Cross the Shira Plateau to Shira Cathedral (a distinctive volcanic formation). Descend to Barranco Valley and climb to Barranco Camp (~3,900m). Long day — but exceptional scenery and excellent acclimatisation.

5

Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp

Climb the Barranco Wall — a 300m scramble that feels more dramatic than it is dangerous. Descend into Karanga Valley, then climb to Karanga Camp (~4,000m). Rest and hydrate.

6

Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp

Short day to Barafu Camp (~4,600m) — the last water point. Rest through midday, early dinner, then sleep before the summit push.

7

Summit Day → Millennium Camp

Midnight departure. Climb through wind and cold to Stella Point (5,739m), then continue along the rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the Roof of Africa. Descend to Millennium Camp (~3,800m).

8

Millennium Camp → Mweka Gate → Arusha

Forest descent to Mweka Gate. Transfer to Arusha. Recovery night — hot shower, cold beer, and the full debrief with your guides.

D2

Tarangire → Ngorongoro Crater

Morning game drive in Tarangire, then drive to Ngorongoro. Stop at the crater rim for views before descending to your lodge on the rim. Sunset over the Crater if the weather holds.

Ngorongoro Crater → Serengeti

Full morning game drive on the crater floor — hippos, lions, flamingos, and the possibility of black rhino. Lunch at a picnic site in the Crater. Afternoon drive into the Serengeti via Naabi Hill Gate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Lemosho the best route for first-time climbers?

Lemosho approaches from the west and gives you the longest time at altitude before the summit push — eight days versus six or seven for Machame or Marangu. That extra time dramatically improves your body’s ability to acclimatise, which is why Lemosho consistently achieves the highest summit success rates on Kilimanjaro. It is also the least crowded route for the first two days.

What is the Crater Camp option on Lemosho?

Some Lemosho itineraries can include an optional night at Crater Camp inside the Kilimanjaro crater — one of the highest campsites in Africa at 5,500m. This is an upgrade option that must be arranged in advance and carries an additional park fee. Discuss with our team if you are interested.

Can I add extra safari days to this package?

Yes — this itinerary is the baseline. Most clients who climb Lemosho want to add a day in the Serengeti or include Lake Manyara, which extends the safari to 5 or 6 days. We quote these additions individually based on your preferred parks, season, and accommodation tier.

Is this suitable for a solo traveller?

Solo travellers are very welcome on the Lemosho + Safari combo. We pair solo trekkers with a same-gender tent partner on the mountain at no extra cost. For safari, solo travellers can join an existing group or pay for a private vehicle supplement.

What happens if I need to cancel?

The climb and safari legs have separate cancellation terms. Mountain: 30+ days = 80% refund, 15–29 days = 50% refund, within 14 days = no refund. Safari: 14+ days = 80% refund, 7–13 days = 50% refund. If you summit Kili but cannot continue the safari due to injury, we will reschedule rather than cancel.
