The Machame Route is nicknamed the "Whiskey Route" — a reputation earned by its steeper, more dramatic terrain compared to the gentler Marangu ("Coca-Cola") Route. It approaches from the south-west, offering varied scenery: rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and ice fields. The 7-day itinerary is the minimum recommended for good acclimatisation.
Our Machame climbs are guided by certified Kilimanjaro guides with an average of 500+ successful summit ascents each. We maintain a 6:1 climber-to-guide ratio on the mountain, exceeding the industry standard.
Day by Day — Mountain
Arrival in Arusha
Meet our team at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Transfer to your Arusha hotel. Trip briefing with your mountain guide — kit check, route overview, and any last questions. Evening dinner with the team.
Machame Gate → Shira Camp
drive to Machame Gate. Registration and warm-up hike through rainforest. Arrive at Shira Camp (~3,600m) by late afternoon. First night at altitude.
Shira Camp → Barranco Camp
The most varied day on Machame — through moorland, past the Lava Tower (4,630m), and down into the Great Western Breach notch. Barranco Camp (~3,900m) sits in a stunning valley. Acclimatisation day disguised as a hard hiking day.
Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp
Technical section: climb the Barranco Wall (graduated scramble, no technical gear needed). Descend into the Karanga Valley, then climb back up to Karanga Camp (~4,000m). The altitude is now real — slow down, breathe, move.
Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp
Final ascent day before summit. Short hike to Barafu Camp (~4,600m) — the last water point. Early dinner, then rest before the midnight summit push.
Summit Day → Millennium Camp
Depart at midnight. Climb 6+ hours to Stella Point (5,739m) or Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — sunrise over the ice fields of the Roof of Africa. Descend to Millennium Camp (~3,800m) for celebration and sleep.
Millennium Camp → Mweka Gate → Arusha
Final descent through forest to Mweka Gate. Celebratory lunch. Transfer back to Arusha. Recovery day — rest, hot shower, reflect on what you just did.

Arusha → Serengeti
Depart early. Drive through Ngorongoro Conservation Area (stop for views at the crater rim). Enter the Serengeti via Naabi Hill Gate. Afternoon game drive on the way to your camp. Wildebeest, zebra, lion, and if you're lucky — a kill.
Full Day Serengeti
Dawn game drive — predators are most active at first light. Return to camp for breakfast. Relax mid-morning. Afternoon game drive toward the northern plains or river corridors, depending on the season and where the migration is located.
Serengeti → Ngorongoro Crater → Arusha
Morning game drive, then depart for Ngorongoro. Descend the crater floor (2,000m) for a final game drive — hippos, flamingos on the soda lake, black rhino if you're fortunate. Drive back to Arusha. Trip ends.

Why Book as a Combo?
Booking the climb and safari separately with two operators costs more than the sum of the parts — two sets of transfer fees, two booking margins, two communication chains. With one operator, you pay one price, deal with one team, and eliminate every hand-off.

What is the Machame Route?
Machame is the most popular route on Kilimanjaro — also called the Whiskey Route due to its reputation for being more demanding than Marangu (the Coca-Cola Route). It approaches from the southwest, passing through five distinct climate zones from rainforest to alpine desert to arctic summit. The 7-day itinerary gives you one acclimatisation day built in (the Lava Tower day), which significantly improves summit success rates.
Is Machame suitable for beginners?
Machame requires no technical climbing experience — it is a trekking route. What it does require is good physical fitness, mental preparation for 6–7 consecutive hiking days, and willingness to hike at altitude. The Barranco Wall involves some scrambling but no ropes or specialist equipment.
Why is the 7-day Machame better than the 6-day version?
The extra day on the 7-day Machame itinerary — specifically the day via Lava Tower (4,630m) back down to Barranco Camp — is a technique called climb high, sleep low. This is the single biggest factor in summit success rates. We only offer the 7-day Machame; we do not operate the rushed 6-day version.
What safari does the Machame combo include?
The Machame + Safari combo includes 3 days: full day in the Serengeti (central or northern depending on the season), a morning game drive on departure day, and a Ngorongoro Crater game drive on the way back to Arusha. It covers the Big Five in a compact timeframe.
Can I add Zanzibar to this trip?
Yes — Zanzibar is a popular add-on after the mountain and safari. Most clients fly from Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) to Zanzibar (ZNZ) after the safari. We can arrange the Zanzibar beach extension as a separate package or as part of the same booking.
Combo sequencing hub
After you pick the route, sequence the safari
The highest-converting combo enquiries come from travellers who understand the sequence: route first, recovery second, safari depth third, then one combined quote.
Choose the climb depth
Machame, Lemosho or Northern Circuit?
Match the mountain route to the safari pace you want after summit night. Shorter climbs need gentler safari starts; longer routes give more recovery margin.
Compare Kili routes →Pick the safari depth
Ngorongoro taste or Serengeti immersion?
Use Safari Kilimanjaro for the combined quote, then go deeper on park research before choosing 3, 5 or 7 safari days.

Your transfer, rest day, climb crew, safari guide and emergency plan stay in one itinerary and one WhatsApp thread from JRO arrival to departure.
