January Kilimanjaro safari combo โ€” Uhuru Peak at sunrise with the Serengeti plains below

January ยท Peak Dry Season

January Kilimanjaro Safari Combo

The clearest skies. The shortest grass. The best predator action of the year. January is Tanzania at its absolute finest.

January sits squarely in Tanzania's peak dry season โ€” and it shows. The weather is the most stable you will find all year on Kilimanjaro, the safari parks are at their most accessible, and the Great Migration herds are gathering in the southern Serengeti in the weeks before the famous calving season begins.

This is not the cheapest month to visit Tanzania. But it is the most reliable. If you have one window to summit Kilimanjaro and see the Serengeti at its best, January is it. This guide covers how to make the most of both experiences in a single, extraordinary trip.

Why January for Kilimanjaro + Safari

Peak Dry Season on the Mountain

January is the driest and most stable month on Kilimanjaro. Rain is rare, the trails are dry on all routes, and summit views on clear mornings are extraordinary. The equatorial sun is intense โ€” proper sun protection is essential โ€” but the climbing conditions are the best of the year. Summit success rates are at their highest. The Machame and Lemosho routes are in excellent condition, and the Rongai route (northern approach) offers exceptional views with less crowding.

Southern Serengeti: Pre-Calving Season

By January, the Great Migration herds have moved south into the Ndutu region and southern Serengeti plains โ€” the same area where 500,000 calves will be born in February. The predators know this: January is when lion prides, cheetahs, and hyena clans are following the herds most closely. Wildlife photography is exceptional โ€” short grass, concentrated animals, and beautiful soft light. Ngorongoro Crater is also at its finest in January: dry, accessible, and teeming with wildlife.

Short Grass, Best Game Viewing

The dry season means shorter grass across all Tanzania parks. Animals cluster around remaining water sources, making them easier to locate. The vegetation is not yet the thick green of the long rains โ€” visibility is excellent, and game drives are productive. January strikes the ideal balance between the lush green season (great for birds and photography, but animals dispersed) and the dry and dusty peak season (animals concentrated but parks busy).

Start the Year at the Top of Africa

There is no better way to begin a new year than standing at Uhuru Peak at sunrise, having just completed the climb of Africa's highest mountain. Our January climbers consistently tell us the same thing: nothing puts the rest of the year in perspective quite like watching the sunrise from 5,895 metres, knowing you walked there under your own power. The post-summit safari is the perfect decompression โ€” relaxing in a Land Cruiser, seeing the migration herds, and letting the achievement sink in.

Safari in January: Where to Go

Serengeti โ€” Southern Circuit (Ndutu)

Focus: Pre-calving migration, predator action, photography

Wildlife: Wildebeest herds building, exceptional cheetah sightings, lion prides active, short grass excellent for spotting

Recommended: 3โ€“4 days recommended

Ndutu and the southern plains are the highlight in January โ€” far less visited than the central Serengeti, extraordinary wildlife

Ngorongoro Crater

Focus: Big Five, crater floor game drive

Wildlife: All Big Five reliably seen, black rhino active, large lion prides, excellent leopard sightings in the Lerai Forest

Recommended: 1โ€“2 days recommended

January is peak season โ€” Ngorongoro is busy but the crater is small enough that a skilled guide finds solitude within it

Tarangire

Focus: Elephant herds, baobab landscapes, birdlife

Wildlife: Tarangire's famous elephant concentrations, tree lions, 550+ bird species, iconic baobab backdrop

Recommended: 1 day recommended

Often combined en route between Ngorongoro and Arusha โ€” a half-day game drive here is an excellent complement to the larger parks

January Combo FAQs

Is January a good month for Kilimanjaro and safari combined?

January is one of the finest months for a Kilimanjaro and safari combination. It sits in the dry season โ€” the most stable weather window of the year โ€” with exceptional game viewing across all northern Tanzania parks. The Great Migration herds are in the southern Serengeti, building toward the February calving season. Predator activity is high, the grass is short, and wildlife is concentrated around water sources. On the mountain, January offers consistently clear skies and the highest summit success rates of any month. It is peak season for a reason.

What is the weather like on Kilimanjaro in January?

January is deep in Kilimanjaro's dry season โ€” the most reliable month for clear weather. Rain is rare, the trails are dry, and summit views are generally excellent. Daytime temperatures at base camp (2,700m) are around 20โ€“25ยฐC. At summit (5,895m), night temperatures drop to -15 to -25ยฐC. The main considerations: sun protection is critical at altitude (the equatorial sun is intense), and the cold at summit requires proper gear. January conditions are considered the best of the year for climbing โ€” more stable than June, clearer than August.

What is the Great Migration doing in January?

In January, the Great Migration herds are concentrated in the southern Serengeti and the Ndutu region โ€” the short-grass plains between the Serengeti and Ngorongoro. This is the pre-calving phase: the herds are building, grazing heavily, and predators are following. The actual calving begins in late January and peaks in February. January is exceptional for wildlife photography because the grass is short (easy animal spotting), the light is soft, and predator action โ€” lions, cheetahs, and hyenas โ€” is high as they target the vulnerable calves. It is one of the best months for photography-focused safaris.

Is January crowded on Kilimanjaro and in the safari parks?

January is peak season โ€” the busiest time of year on Kilimanjaro and in Tanzania's safari parks. The mountain will be busy, and the popular safari routes (Ngorongoro, central Serengeti) see significant numbers. However: the parks are large enough that you will not feel crowded in most areas. The key strategy in January is routing your safari through the southern Serengeti/ Ndutu region, which is less visited than the central Serengeti, and choosing routes and camps that emphasize exclusivity. Our 14-day Lemosho combo includes private conservancy access that avoids the main Serengeti crowds.

How much does a January Kilimanjaro + safari combo cost?

January is peak season โ€” prices are at their highest of the year. A 10-day Machame + northern Serengeti combo starts from $4,264 per person. A 14-day Lemosho + northern circuit (Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro) with conservancy access starts from $5,616 per person. These prices include all park fees, accommodation, guides, meals, and transfers. International flights and tips are not included. The premium over shoulder-season months (May, June, November) is approximately $624โ€“$1,040 per person โ€” you are paying for the best weather and highest summit success rate of the year.

Which Kilimanjaro route is best for a January climb?

For January, we recommend either the Machame route (7 days) or Lemosho route (8 days). Both routes are at their best in January โ€” dry trails, excellent visibility, and high success rates. The Rongai route is also excellent in January as it approaches from the north (less rain). We do not recommend the Marangu route in January despite its shorter duration โ€” the dry conditions make the steeper paths more tiring, and the hut accommodation books out very early in January due to its popularity. Lemosho gives the best acclimatisation profile and is our most recommended route for January climbs.
