April 2026 Green Season
Kilimanjaro Safari in April
Lush landscapes, baby animals, lowest prices — but honest about what April means for your climb and safari combo.
The Honest April Assessment
Kilimanjaro in April
Avoid if possible. The long rains make trails muddy and slippery, visibility is poor, and summit temperatures can be extreme. Success rates drop to 45–60%. Most quality operators offer Rongai-only in April, or skip the month entirely.
Consider moving the climb to May or September.
Safari in April
Excellent — for the right traveller. Lush green landscapes, baby animals from January births, dramatically lower lodge prices (40–60% off peak), and excellent birdlife. Afternoon rain showers are common but brief.
April is one of our favourite months for photography.
What You Will See in April
Baby Animals Everywhere
January and February are peak calving season. April means you see young wildebeest, zebra, impala, and gazelle still with their mothers. Lion prides are active with cubs. The grass is short enough for good visibility but green enough for dramatic photography.
Green Season Photography
The Serengeti in April is a different planet from the dry-season golden savanna. Emerald grasses, dark thunderclouds, dramatic light, and the contrast between green hills and blue sky is extraordinary. Wildlife photographers specifically seek out April for this reason.
Birds by the Thousand
April is peak birding season. Migratory birds from Europe and Asia are present. The flamingo populations on Lake Natron and Lake Manyara are at their highest. The breeding colours of resident birds are at their most vivid.
Elephants in Tarangire
Tarangire National Park comes into its own in April. The Tarangire River stays full, and elephant herds of 50–200 animals concentrate along its banks. The park is green and beautiful, and because fewer tourists visit in April, game viewing feels private.
Park Conditions in April
| Park | Conditions | Wildlife |
|---|---|---|
| Ngorongoro Crater | Excellent — crater floor stays dry, rain does not affect access | High density: lion, elephant, rhino, hippo, flamingo |
| Serengeti (Central) | Good — green landscape, large herds moving through | Resident predators, herds of wildebeest and zebra in transition |
| Serengeti (Western) | Good — herds approaching Grumeti River | Wildebeest in large numbers, crocodiles waiting |
| Tarangire | Excellent — river full, elephants concentrated, fewer tourists | Huge elephant herds, good lion sightings, birds |
| Lake Manyara | Good — birding excellent, lake level high | Flamingo, pelican, thousands of other birds |
| Selous / Ruaha | Difficult — many roads become impassable | Wildlife present but harder to access |

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I climb Kilimanjaro in April?
Honest answer: April is the worst month to climb Kilimanjaro. The long rains bring daily rain, muddy trails, poor visibility, and summit temperatures that can drop to -20C with wind chill. Success rates drop to 45–60% versus 88–95% in the peak months. Most quality operators pause April climbs. If you are set on April, the Rongai Route is your best option — it approaches from the north and receives less rainfall than southern routes. But we generally recommend May or June for an April trip, or moving the climb to September and using April only for the safari.
Is April a good month for a Tanzania safari?
April safari is genuinely excellent for the right traveller. Green season transforms the landscape — the Serengeti is emerald instead of gold, the air is fresh, and the birdlife is extraordinary. Many animals give birth in January and February, so April means you see young calves, foals, and chicks alongside their mothers. Lodge prices drop 40–60% from peak season. The trade-off: afternoon rain showers are common, some roads in remote areas become difficult, and the large herds of the Great Migration are not in Tanzania (they are calving in the Ndutu region through February, then moving north toward Kenya in July).
What is the Great Migration doing in April?
In April, the Great Migration is in transition. The herds that calved in the Ndutu region (January–February) have been moving slowly north through the central Serengeti. By late April, they begin crossing into the Western Corridor, approaching the Grumeti River. This is not peak river-crossing season — that is July through October — but you will see large numbers of wildebeest and zebra moving through the central Serengeti, with excellent predator action as lions and hyenas follow the herds. It is a different, quieter, more intimate migration experience.
Which parks are best for an April safari?
Ngorongoro Crater is the standout in April — the floor stays dry and accessible year-round, wildlife is concentrated by permanent water, and the crater walls block the rain. The Serengeti is excellent for green-season photography — the landscape is lush, the light is soft, and the wildlife is still present. Tarangire is the most dramatically green in April — the Tarangire River stays full and elephant herds concentrate along it. Lake Manyara is bird-heavy in April. The Southern Circuit parks (Selous, Ruaha) are less accessible due to rain.
How much does a Kilimanjaro and safari combo cost in April?
April produces the lowest prices of any month for the safari component. Lodge rates drop 40–60% from peak season (July–August). For a 10-day combo in April — with Kilimanjaro limited to the Rongai Route and a 3-park safari — expect from $3,328–$4,576 per person depending on accommodation level. This is $832–$1,456 less than the same itinerary in peak season. If you skip the climb entirely and do an April-only safari, the savings are even more dramatic.
What should I pack for an April safari in Tanzania?
Pack a light rain layer for afternoon showers — but do not overthink it. April showers are warm and usually brief. Quick-dry clothing in neutral bush colours is essential. A light fleece for early morning game drives. Binoculars are critical — green-season wildlife viewing is often at longer range as animals stay near cover. A waterproof bag for your camera gear. For the Kilimanjaro component, waterproof hiking boots are non-negotiable in April, along with gaiters, quick-dry layers, and a quality rain shell. Your day pack contents will get damp — use dry bags.
