February is the last month of peak calving at Ndutu. You will see newborns still wobbly on their legs, predators in active pursuit, and the extraordinary density of wildlife that makes this season so exceptional. By late February, the herds begin their long march north.

February is an excellent month to climb Kilimanjaro. It remains firmly within the dry season — trails are dry and in good condition, skies are clear, and the mountain is at its most beautiful. Success rates are 85–93%, among the highest of any month. The Rongai Route benefits from the dry conditions particularly in February, making it a viable option alongside the Machame and Lemosho. February also tends to be slightly less crowded than January, making it an attractive alternative for those who cannot secure January bookings.
Where is the Great Migration in February?
February is peak calving season for the Great Migration, with the herds still concentrated in the Ndutu region of the southern Serengeti and Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The calving that began in January continues through mid-February, giving you an excellent chance to witness newborn wildebeest and zebra. By late February, the herds begin to stir and prepare for their northward migration. This is one of the most emotionally impactful wildlife experiences you can have — the sheer density of newborns against the Ndutu plains is staggering.
How crowded is Tanzania in February?
February is peak season, but crowds tend to thin slightly after the New Year rush. January sees the highest volume of the dry season; February is a close second but feels less crowded at popular viewpoints and on the trails. Safari camps and Kilimanjaro routes are busy — this is not a month for solitude — but our operators know the less-visited areas of each park and can still create a sense of exclusivity even within a busy park.

What should I pack for a February Kilimanjaro climb?
February's dry season means pack lighter for rain than in the green months, but the summit is still cold. Bring: thermal base layers, a warm fleece, a down jacket for summit night, waterproof shell, sturdy hiking boots (broken in), headlamp with extra batteries, sunscreen, and lip balm with SPF.
