The Last of the Migration Herds
March sees large herds still moving through the central Serengeti, heading north toward the Western Corridor. While peak calving is over, there are still thousands of animals concentrated in the central plains — a spectacular sight in its own right.
Green Season Photography
By mid-March, the first rains have transformed the landscape. Dark storm clouds over green plains, dramatic light, and newborn antelope make March exceptional for photography. The Serengeti in green season is a completely different — and in many ways more beautiful — experience from the dry-season gold.
Fewer Crowds
March sees significantly fewer tourists than January or February. The parks feel more intimate, your guide has more flexibility, and the lodge experience is more personal. If solitude matters to you, March is a good choice.
Birding Season
March is peak migratory bird season. European and Asian migrants are present, and resident birds are in breeding plumage. The birding at Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro Crater is excellent in March.

Is March a good month to climb Kilimanjaro?
Honest answer: March is a marginal month for Kilimanjaro. The long rains typically begin in the second or third week of March, bringing daily rain to the southern routes (Machame, Lemosho, Umbwe) and making trails muddy and slippery. Success rates drop to 65–80%. We generally recommend the Rongai Route in March — it approaches from the drier north and receives significantly less rainfall. If you are committed to March, Rongai is your best option. Otherwise, consider April (better for safari, not climbing) or May (rainy but improving) or waiting until June.
Where is the Great Migration in March?
In March, the Great Migration is in transition. The herds have left the Ndutu calving grounds and are moving north through the central Serengeti toward the Western Corridor. The peak calving spectacle is over, but you will still see very large herds moving through the central Serengeti. This is not peak river-crossing season — that begins in May-June and peaks in July through October. March is a quieter wildlife month in terms of spectacle, but the landscape is still beautiful and game viewing is solid.

March is transitional. The first half of March is essentially an extension of the dry season — clear, warm, excellent conditions. The long rains typically begin in the second or third week, initially as afternoon showers and then more sustained rainfall. Daytime temperatures on safari remain warm (25–30C). Lodge prices drop significantly from February as March is considered shoulder season. If you can travel in the first half of March, you get near-peak conditions at off-peak prices.
What does March mean for safari conditions?
Early March (1–15) offers peak-season-like conditions at shoulder-season prices. The grass is still short, wildlife is easy to spot, and skies are predominantly clear. From mid-March onward, afternoon showers become more frequent — these are usually warm, brief, and do not ruin game viewing. The landscape begins to green up, which many photographers actually prefer. Roads in remote areas of the Serengeti can become muddy by late March, but the northern circuit parks (Ngorongoro, central Serengeti) remain accessible.

April is better than March for safari photography and wildlife viewing. If your priority is the climb: June is the better choice, when the long rains have ended and the mountain is at its greenest and most beautiful. March is a transitional compromise — early March is still worth it, late March is better skipped in favour of April or June.
