May green season — emerald Kilimanjaro slopes and lush Serengeti plains

May 2026 — Green Season Value

Kilimanjaro Safari in May

The cheapest month of the year. Lush green landscapes, Grumeti River crossings, and nearly empty parks. An honest guide on what May really means.

The May Verdict

Kilimanjaro in May

Challenging but beautiful. Full long rains make all routes except Rongai difficult. Muddy trails, reduced visibility, success rates 55–70%. The mountain IS beautiful in May — waterfalls full, slopes green — but the practical challenges are real.

Rongai only, or wait until June.

Safari in May

Excellent for the right traveller. Grumeti River crossings, lush Ngorongoro Crater, 50–60% off peak lodge pricing, and parks so empty they feel private. Afternoon rain is manageable. May is one of our best-kept secrets.

Best value safari month of the year.

What You Will See in May

Grumeti River Crossings

The Great Migration reaches the Grumeti River in May. While less famous than the Mara River crossings, watching thousands of wildebeest and zebra plunge into the crocodile-filled Grumeti — with lions and hyenas waiting on the other side — is an extraordinary wildlife spectacle that few tourists witness.

Emerald Mountain

Kilimanjaro in May is a different mountain from the brown peak-season version. Waterfalls cascade down the slopes, the Heather and moorland zones are a vivid green, and the landscape is lush and alive. For photography of the mountain itself, May may be the most beautiful month of all.

Empty Ngorongoro Crater

In peak season, Ngorongoro Crater can feel busy. In May, you regularly have the 3,000 square kilometre floor almost to yourself. Wildlife is concentrated by permanent water, and the combination of crater walls, soda lake, and green grass is one of Africa's most distinctive landscapes.

Birding Bonanza

May is peak migratory bird season. Flamingo populations on Lake Natron and Ngorongoro Crater are at their highest. Migratory birds from Europe and Asia are present in large numbers. The combination of resident and migratory species makes May exceptional for birders.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is May a good month to climb Kilimanjaro?

May is a challenging month for Kilimanjaro. The long rains are in full force — daily rain, muddy trails, poor visibility, and slippery conditions on all routes except the Rongai (which remains the most viable option). Success rates drop to 55–70%. That said, May has a hidden advantage: the mountain is at its most beautiful. The landscapes are emerald green, waterfalls are at full flow, and the overall scenery is dramatically more beautiful than the brown, dry slopes of the peak season. If you are an experienced hiker who prioritises beauty over comfort, May delivers. Otherwise, June is a better option.

Is May a good month for a Tanzania safari?

May safari is genuinely excellent for the right traveller. Lodge prices are at their absolute lowest — up to 60% off peak season. The landscape is lush and green, wildlife photography is spectacular, and birdlife is extraordinary. May is one of our favourite months for Ngorongoro Crater specifically — the crater floor stays accessible, wildlife is concentrated, and you often have the entire crater almost to yourself. The trade-off is afternoon rain that can sometimes interrupt game drives, and some remote roads in the Serengeti become difficult.

Where is the Great Migration in May?

In May, the Great Migration is crossing the Grumeti River in the Western Serengeti. While not as dramatic as the famous Mara River crossings of July–October, the Grumeti crossings are still spectacular — large numbers of wildebeest and zebra crossing a river full of crocodiles, with predator action following. May is an excellent month for these crossings and you will often have far fewer spectators than at the Mara River in high season.

What is the cost of a May Kilimanjaro and safari combo?

May is the lowest-priced month of the year for Tanzania. Lodge rates are 50–60% below peak season. A 10-day Lemosho Route + 4-day northern circuit safari starts from $2,912 per person — the best value of any month for this itinerary. Rongai + safari starts from $2,496 per person. If budget is a primary concern, May delivers the most experience per dollar.

How rainy is May really?

May is rainy — but it is not a monsoon. The rains typically come as afternoon showers, often dramatic thunderstorms that clear quickly. Mornings are frequently clear and sunny. The total rainfall is actually less than April in many areas. The key is flexibility — your game drives may have rain interruptions, but the green landscapes, dramatic skies, and empty parks more than compensate. Our safari vehicles are all-enclosed and comfortable in all weather.

Should I wait until June instead of May?

If your priority is the Kilimanjaro climb, June is better — the long rains are ending, conditions improve rapidly in June's first two weeks, and the mountain is still beautifully green. If your priority is the safari and budget is important, May is excellent — the Grumeti crossings are still happening, Ngorongoro is superb, and the price advantage is significant. Both months offer exceptional value compared to peak season.
