The best-kept secret in Tanzania. Green season beauty, lowest prices, dramatic skies, nearly empty parks. November is the traveller's reward for understanding Tanzania.
The November Verdict
Kilimanjaro in November
Challenging. Short rains make southern routes muddy and wet. Success rates drop to 60โ75%. Rongai Route (drier north) remains more viable at 75โ82%. Not recommended for first-time climbers on southern routes in November. December is better for the climb.
Safari-only November recommended for most travellers.

Best value safari month of the year.
What You Will See in November
Green Season Paradise
The November landscape is profoundly different from peak season. The Serengeti is emerald green rather than gold, the air is fresh, and the skies are dramatic with towering cumulus clouds and shafts of sunlight. For landscape photography, November is arguably the finest month of the year. The combination of green grass, dark clouds, and wildlife creates images that are impossible to capture in the dry season.
Migration Herds Arriving
November marks the beginning of the migration's return to Tanzania. Herds are entering the southern and eastern Serengeti from Kenya, concentrating in the area that will become the Ndutu calving grounds by January. While the calving is still two months away, you will see very large herds of wildebeest and zebra moving south โ a spectacular sight in its own right.
Newborn Animals
November is peak birthing season for Thomson's gazelle and Grant's gazelle (not to be confused with the wildebeest calving of January-February). You will see many newborn antelope across the Serengeti plains, which attracts predators. The combination of newborns, green grass, and dramatic skies is extraordinary.
Parks Without Crowds
November parks are almost empty. The Ngorongoro Crater floor may have fewer than 10 vehicles on it โ compared to dozens in peak season. The Serengeti's southern areas feel entirely private. If you have been to Tanzania in peak season, November will shock you with its intimacy and solitude.
Park Conditions in November
| Park | Conditions | Wildlife |
|---|---|---|
| Serengeti (Southern) | Excellent โ migration arriving, landscape green, few tourists | Large herds arriving, newborn antelope, predator activity |
| Ngorongoro Crater | Excellent โ accessible year-round, very few visitors | Lion, elephant, rhino, flamingo, high density, minimal crowds |
| Serengeti (Central) | Good โ green landscape, resident wildlife | Resident cats, good general game |
| Tarangire | Difficult โ mud season, roads challenging | Reduced elephant access |
| Lake Manyara | Good โ birding excellent | Flamingo, diverse bird species |
| Kilimanjaro (Rongai only) | Marginal โ short rains established, muddy but viable | N/A |

Frequently Asked Questions
Is November a good month to climb Kilimanjaro?
November is a challenging month for Kilimanjaro. The short rains are established, bringing daily rain to the southern and western routes (Machame, Lemosho, Umbwe). Trails become muddy and slippery. Success rates drop to 60โ75%. However, the Rongai Route โ approaching from the drier north โ remains more viable even in November, with success rates of 75โ82%. We do not recommend November for first-time climbers on the southern routes. If you are set on November, use Rongai only. Otherwise, December typically sees the rains ease as the short rainy season winds down.
Is November a good month for a Tanzania safari?
November is a genuinely excellent month for a Tanzania safari โ one of our hidden gems. The short rains have transformed the landscape into a vivid green paradise. Photography conditions are extraordinary โ dramatic skies, newborn animals, emerald grass, and clear air. Lodge prices are at their lowest of the year โ 50โ60% below peak season. The trade-off: afternoon rain showers are common (but usually brief and warm), and some remote roads become difficult. The Serengeti's southern and central areas are at their most beautiful.
Where is the Great Migration in November?
By November, the Great Migration has moved south from Kenya and is beginning to enter the southern and eastern Serengeti, heading toward the Ndutu calving grounds. The exact timing varies year by year, but November is when the herds begin arriving in the southern Serengeti โ the same area where they will calve in January-February. This means large herds are present in the southern Serengeti, which is quieter and more accessible than the northern crossing points. November witnesses the beginning of the cycle that will lead to the January calving.
What is the cost of a November Kilimanjaro and safari combo?
November is the lowest-priced month for the safari component โ 50โ60% below peak season. Lodge rates are at their annual minimum. A 10-day northern circuit safari starts from $1,664 per person. For the Kilimanjaro component, November pricing is off-peak โ Rongai Route + safari starts from $2,704 per person. November is the best value of any month in Tanzania. If budget is a primary consideration, November is impossible to beat.
How rainy is November really?
November's short rains are different from the long rains of April-May. They typically come as afternoon showers โ dramatic, warm thunderstorms that last 1โ2 hours and clear to blue skies. Mornings are frequently clear and sunny. The total rainfall is moderate โ not a continuous downpour. Our safari vehicles are comfortable and enclosed. The key is flexibility in your daily schedule โ if an afternoon shower interrupts a game drive, you simply wait it out and continue. The green landscapes and dramatic skies that result from the rain make November exceptional for photography.
What should I pack for a November safari?
November packing is a mix of wet and dry season. Bring: quick-dry clothing in layers, a light rain jacket for afternoon showers, a fleece or light jacket for early morning game drives, sturdy waterproof hiking boots for Kilimanjaro (essential), gaiters (recommended for muddy trails), a waterproof daypack, dry bags for electronics, and the usual safari essentials. Binoculars are critical โ animals tend to stay near cover in the green season, making long-range viewing more common.
