September's temperatures are the most comfortable of the year for safari. The intense heat of October and November has not yet arrived. Daytime game drives in the Serengeti are warm but pleasant (22β28C). Early morning game drives require a warm layer but are not cold. This is the most comfortable month for photography from open vehicles.

September is our top recommendation for climbing Kilimanjaro. The dry season continues in full force β trails are dry and in excellent condition, skies are crystal clear, and the mountain is at its most stable. Success rates are 88β95%, among the highest of any month. More importantly: the August peak crowds have subsided. September delivers peak-season conditions with significantly fewer people on the mountain. All routes are open and performing at their best. This is the single best month for the overall Kilimanjaro experience.
Where is the Great Migration in September?
In September, the Great Migration is crossing the Mara River in the northern Serengeti β peak crossing season continues from August into September. The crossings are still dramatic and reliable, and the crowds of August have thinned significantly. September offers near-identical wildlife viewing to August, with a more comfortable safari experience. The herds begin their slow return southward by late September, but early-to-mid September crossings are still spectacular.
How crowded is Tanzania in September?
September is significantly less crowded than August β but still busy. The European summer holiday season has ended, reducing tourist volumes. The northern Serengeti still has good numbers of visitors for the crossings, but the overwhelming crowds of August are gone. Kilimanjaro's trails are more comfortable in September than any month from July through October. This combination β excellent wildlife, excellent climbing conditions, and reduced crowds β is why we consider September the single best month to visit Tanzania.

September pricing is high season but below August peak. What is the weather like in Tanzania in September?
September is dry, sunny, and comfortable. The intense heat of later months has not yet arrived. Daytime safari temperatures are 22β28C β ideal for game drives. Nights are cool (10β15C on safari, much colder on Kilimanjaro's summit). On the mountain, September's clear skies mean cold nights (summit: -15C to -25C) but beautiful daytime temperatures on the lower slopes. This is the most comfortable safari month from a temperature perspective.
Is September better than August?
For most travellers, yes β September is better than August. The wildlife viewing is nearly identical (both have peak Mara River crossings), the Kilimanjaro conditions are excellent in both months, but September has meaningfully fewer crowds and costs 10β15% less. The only reason to choose August over September is if your holiday schedule demands it. Otherwise, September is the better choice for every reason.
