Organised hiking gear and boots laid out before a Kilimanjaro climb

Gear & Packing

The Kilimanjaro Safari Combo Gear Guide

What to pack for the climb and the safari โ€” and what to leave at home. The gear list that makes the difference between a comfortable trip and a difficult one.

The combination of a high-altitude mountain climb and a Tanzania safari presents a unique packing challenge. The mountain demands cold-weather gear, technical layers, and serious footwear. The safari requires neutral-coloured clothing, binoculars, and sun protection. Most people over-pack one and under-pack the other. This guide is the result of 48 years of guiding both โ€” and watching what clients arrive with versus what they actually needed.

The most important principle: every gram matters on the mountain. Your main duffel bag is carried by a porter, and there is a 15kg weight limit. Internal flights between safari parks have similar weight restrictions. Pack with discipline, and you will move through this trip with far more ease.

Rent vs Buy โ€” Key Decisions

Sleeping bag

Rent for first-timers. A good -15ยฐC down bag costs $312โ€“500 to buy. Renting costs $31โ€“50 for the duration.

Rent

Trekking poles

Rent or buy. If you hike regularly, buy. If this is a one-time trip, rent.

Either

Hiking boots

Buy โ€” but break them in thoroughly. This is not an item to rent.

Buy

Technical layers

Buy. Good base and mid layers last for years and make any future outdoor activity more enjoyable.

Buy

Binoculars

Rent if you don't own a pair. Buy if you already have them. Safari without binoculars is significantly diminished.

Rent or buy

Headlamp

Buy โ€” a good headlamp costs $31โ€“60 and is useful for many years.

Buy

Duffel bag

Rent (your operator provides this as part of the climb package).

The Gear Mistakes We See Every Year

These are the failures that cause the most problems. Most are avoidable with the right preparation.

critical

Gear Guide for Kili Safari | Packing List Tips

The most common gear mistake. New boots cause blisters even if they feel comfortable at home. Wear your boots on long hikes for at least 4โ€“6 weeks before departure. If they cause hot spots at home, they will be debilitating at altitude.

high

Gear Guide for Kili Safari | Packing List Tips

Porters have a strict 15kg weight limit for your duffel bag. Every gram counts when you're paying for excess baggage on internal flights and your porter is carrying your bag up a mountain. Pack light, then pack lighter.

high

Your layers work in your garden at sea level โ€” test them on a cold hike or in a walk-in freezer. Familiarity with cold-weather gear is as important as having it.

medium

Gear Guide for Kili Safari | Packing List Tips

The combination of altitude (thinner atmosphere), reflective dust, and equatorial sun is more intense than most people expect. SPF 50 is a minimum โ€” apply before every game drive and on the mountain.

medium

Gear Guide for Kili Safari | Packing List Tips

At altitude you lose moisture faster than you realise through respiration. Carry at least 2 litres on walking days and drink before you feel thirsty. By the time you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated.

high

A cold night on Kilimanjaro is not just uncomfortable โ€” it affects your sleep, your recovery, and your ability to acclimatise. Rent the highest-rated bag available, not the minimum spec.
