The Combo Calendar

Best Time for the Kilimanjaro Safari Combo

Every month gives you something โ€” but not every month gives you both the climb and the safari at their best. Here is the honest seasonal guide.

The Kilimanjaro-safari combo is a rare double experience โ€” one of the world's great climbs followed by one of the world's great wildlife experiences. Getting the timing right means both deliver at their best.

The challenge is that the optimal climbing season and the optimal safari season do not perfectly overlap. January-February is extraordinary for both. July-September is peak for both but also peak in every other dimension โ€” price, crowds, and the need to book 9-12 months ahead. Here is the complete picture.

March

Season

Climb

Fair โ€” long rains begin mid-month. Trails become slippery. Some routes less accessible.

April

Season

Climb

Poor โ€” peak long rains. Trails extremely slippery. Summit success rates drop significantly.

Safari

Good for birding, green landscapes. Some remote park access difficult.

Combined verdict: Not recommended for the combo. The climb will be compromised by rain, and the safari wildlife is dispersed. Consider safari-only or postpone the climb.

May

Season

Climb

Fair โ€” rains easing but trails still wet. Lower summit success rates than dry season.

June

Season

Climb

Good โ€” dry season begins. Trails drying. Good summit conditions.

July

Season

Climb

Excellent โ€” peak dry season. Clear skies, stable conditions, highest summit success rates.

Safari

Peak โ€” wildebeest crossing the Mara River in northern Serengeti.

August

Season

Climb

Excellent โ€” peak dry season continues. Stable, clear conditions.

September

Season

Climb

Excellent โ€” late dry season. Clear skies, good conditions. Often less crowded than July-August.

Four Seasonal Insights We Tell Friends

โ€”

July-August delivers the best of everything โ€” but also peak prices and crowds. The summit conditions are at their most reliable. The post-climb safari in the northern Serengeti coincides with the migration crossing. The trade-off is paying the highest prices and competing for space at popular viewpoints.

โ€”

January-February is the best-kept combo secret. Summit conditions are excellent, the post-climb safari coincides with the wildebeest calving โ€” arguably the most extraordinary wildlife spectacle in Africa โ€” and the crowding is significantly less than mid-year peak.

โ€”

May and October are the value months. The climb is slightly less reliable but significantly cheaper, and the safari wildlife experience is nearly as good as peak season. For the traveller who prioritises value over perfect conditions, these shoulder months deliver the best return.

โ€”

April is genuinely not recommended for climbing. The long rains make the mountain dangerous for inexperienced trekkers, and the safari wildlife is dispersed. If you are fixed on April, consider a safari-only itinerary and save the Kilimanjaro climb for a drier month.

Combo Timing โ€” FAQs

Should I do the safari before or after the climb?

The vast majority of operators recommend safari after the climb, for two reasons: the mountain takes 6-7 days and leaves you fatigued, and the wildlife contrast โ€” from the physical challenge of the summit to the relaxation of a game drive โ€” is psychologically satisfying. Safari before the climb also works, but it means starting the mountain while still fatigued from travel and game drives. Some operators offer the safari split: one day before the climb (Arusha area), the main safari after.

Does the safari season affect when I should climb?

Partly. The best months for the combined experience are January-February and July-August-September. These periods offer the most reliable climbing conditions AND the best safari wildlife experiences. Outside these windows, you compromise either the climb or the safari. January-February specifically pairs the clearest skies on Kilimanjaro with the wildebeest calving on the Ndutu plains โ€” two extraordinary experiences back to back.

Is it safe to do a safari immediately after summiting Kilimanjaro?

Yes โ€” with conditions. Most clients who summit are physically capable of game drives within 24 hours of descending. The immediate post-summit fatigue is real but short-lived โ€” you will sleep heavily and wake feeling notably better. Within 48 hours of descending to Arusha, most clients are ready for game drives. The key is building in a proper rest day between summit and safari start.

What is the minimum number of days for a good combo?

A realistic minimum is 10 days: 7 days for the climb (including arrival day, preparation, and the summit push) and 3 days for safari. Three days of safari after a climb is tight โ€” it gives you one full day of game drives plus travel days. Five to six safari days after the climb is the sweet spot, giving you time to relax into the wildlife experience.

Does the time of year affect my chance of summiting?

Yes. Summit success rates are highest during the dry seasons (June-October, with July-August being peak) and lower during the rainy seasons (March-May and November). Route choice matters more than month โ€” Lemosho and Machame 8-day itineraries have the highest success rates regardless of month. Avoid April regardless of route โ€” the long rains make the mountain genuinely dangerous.

Can I do the northern Serengeti migration and the climb together?

Yes โ€” and this is the most spectacular version of the combo. To catch both the Mara River crossings and the summit, you need to be in Tanzania from late June through September. The typical itinerary: fly into Kilimanjaro, climb (6-7 days including arrival), fly or drive to the northern Serengeti within 24 hours of descending. You need at least 3-4 days in the northern Serengeti to maximise crossing sighting probability. Book 9-12 months ahead for camps in the northern Serengeti during this period.
