Duration FAQs

Is 10 days enough for Kilimanjaro and a safari?

10 days is the minimum viable option โ€” it is possible, but it requires accepting trade-offs. A 7-day Machame climb combined with a tight 2-day safari gets you both the summit experience and wildlife viewing, but the safari is rushed and there is no rest day between the mountain and the game drives. Altitude symptoms can carry into your first game drive. If you are an experienced hiker with limited time and a flexible body, 10 days works. For most first-time combo travellers, we recommend 14 days.

What is the minimum days needed to summit Kilimanjaro?

The minimum for Kilimanjaro is 5 days on the Marangu Route (the only route with hut accommodation). However, 5 and 6-day Kilimanjaro itineraries have significantly lower summit success rates โ€” 27% for 5-day Marangu versus 90%+ for 7+ day itineraries. Going faster means less acclimatisation, more altitude illness, and a much lower chance of reaching the summit. The minimum recommended for a genuine attempt at the summit is 7 days.

Can I do Kilimanjaro and a safari in 2 weeks?

Yes โ€” 14 days is the ideal duration for a Kilimanjaro and safari combination. The 14-day option gives you 8 days for the Lemosho climb (the route with the highest summit success rate) and 4 days for a proper northern circuit safari covering Tarangire, the Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater. There is a full rest day in Arusha between the descent and the safari start. Most of our combo clients travel for 14 days.

How many safari days do I need after Kilimanjaro?

Minimum: 2 days. This covers Ngorongoro Crater (half a day, which is enough for the density of wildlife there) and one other park. Ideal: 3โ€“4 days. This allows you to do Tarangire or Lake Manyara, the central Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater properly โ€” without rushing. Extended: 5โ€“10 days. If you are combining the northern circuit with Selous or the southern parks, you need 7+ days for the safari alone.

What happens if I don't summit โ€” do I still have time for the safari?

You do. The safari component of your trip runs regardless of your summit outcome. Our 14-day itinerary is structured so that the safari starts after a full rest day in Arusha โ€” giving your body time to recover regardless of whether you turned back at Stella Point, Barafu, or reached the summit. Most clients who do not summit still have an extraordinary time on safari. The wildlife of the Serengeti and Ngorongoro is an equally valid Tanzania experience.

Does the safari need to come after the climb, or can I safari first?

Almost always after. Climbing first means you arrive at altitude fresh, with the best possible chance of summiting. Safari first means you arrive at the mountain fatigued, with potential altitude issues compounded by pre-existing tiredness. The only scenario where we recommend safari first is if you are planning a very short trip (under 10 days) and want the easier experience โ€” the safari โ€” first, accepting the reduced summit chance this creates.

How many rest days do I need between the climb and safari?

Minimum: 1 day. This is included in all of our itineraries from 12 days up. The descent from Kilimanjaro takes you from 5,895m to 1,800m in a single day โ€” your body needs time to readjust. A full rest day in Arusha โ€” real bed, hot shower, a proper meal โ€” is essential. We strongly recommend against itineraries that combine the descent directly with a same-day safari drive. The 14-day itinerary includes a full rest day.

What is the best duration for Kilimanjaro and Safari for first-time combo travellers?

14 days is the unanimous recommendation from our team and from past clients. It gives you: 8 days for the Lemosho climb (best acclimatisation profile, highest summit success rate), a full rest day in Arusha, and 4 days covering the three core northern circuit parks properly. The pacing is comfortable, the wildlife variety is excellent, and the overall trip is long enough to be genuinely transformative without being so long that fatigue becomes a factor.
