Arusha town and the road to the Serengeti โ€” logistics made seamless

The Practical Details

Kilimanjaro + Safari
Logistics

Arusha basecamp, airport transfers, road vs flight to the Serengeti, travel documents, tipping, and what to do with your luggage. Everything logistics โ€” in one place.

One operator handles everything. Here is how it all connects.

The logistics of combining Kilimanjaro with a Tanzania safari are simpler than most travellers expect โ€” particularly when one operator runs both. Arusha is a small city by developing-world standards: manageable, navigable, and home to every operator worth using. The road to the Serengeti is good. The airports are small and efficient. The handovers are internal.

This guide covers the practical details that travellers consistently ask about: airport arrival, where to stay in Arusha, the road vs flight decision, travel documents, what to pack for each leg, tipping norms, and money in Tanzania. Read it before you book โ€” or bookmark it and return when the logistics questions start.

Road vs flight: Arusha to the Serengeti

Road Transfer

Arusha โ†’ Ngorongoro Gate โ†’ Serengeti

Strict 15 kg soft bag limit per person. Excess luggage stored in Arusha at no charge.

Private aircraft. Your group only. Depart when you want.

Luggage

Same 15 kg soft bag limit applies.

Documents

Travel documents and health

The checklist below covers everything most travellers need. Requirements change โ€” verify with your doctor and the Tanzania embassy or consulate in your country before departure.

Passport

6+ months beyond your intended departure date

Tanzania requires at least one blank page

Tanzania Tourist Visa

$52 (US citizens free for stays under 90 days)

Available on arrival at JRO or online at immigration.gov.tz. We recommend the e-visa option โ€” faster and fewer queues

Yellow Fever Certificate

Required

Required if arriving from a yellow fever endemic country

Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Nigeria, Ghana, and many others are endemic. If transiting through Nairobi, bring it. Not required for direct flights from Europe, US, UK, Australia

Travel Insurance

Required

Mandatory for Kilimanjaro climbs

Must cover: altitude climbing to 6,000m, helicopter evacuation from altitude ($52,000+ recommended), trip cancellation. We can recommend providers who specialise in Tanzania travel

Diamox (Acetazolamide)

Required

Recommended for altitude acclimatisation

Consult your doctor before departure. Some clients start 1โ€“2 days before the climb. Not mandatory but significantly reduces altitude sickness risk

Malaria Prophylaxis

Required

Required for safari portions below 1,800m

The Serengeti and Tarangire are at altitudes where malaria is present. Ngorongoro Crater rim (2,200m+) is generally low risk. Consult your travel clinic 4โ€“6 weeks before departure

Tipping Guide

How tipping works in Tanzania

Tipping is not mandatory but is the standard way guides, porters, and safari drivers are rewarded for good service. Amounts below are per climber โ€” based on a group of 1โ€“4. Larger groups typically tip proportionally more.

Role
Per Day
Total Estimate
Note
Lead Guide (Kili)
$16โ€“$21/day per climber
$109โ€“$166 for a 7-day climb
Lead guides are certified, highly trained professionals. Tip reflects their skill and years of experience
Assistant Guide (Kili)
$10โ€“$16/day per climber
$73โ€“$109 for a 7-day climb
Typically 2โ€“3 assistant guides per group, depending on group size
Porters (Kili)
$8โ€“$12/day per climber total
$58โ€“$87 for a 7-day climb
Distributed among the porter team by the lead guide โ€” they have an established system
Safari Guide
$21โ€“$31/day per group
$83โ€“$156 for a 4-day safari
For groups of 1โ€“4 clients. Larger groups typically add more. Safari guide tips are often combined at the end of the trip

Questions

Logistics FAQs

How do I get from Kilimanjaro Airport to Arusha?
Safari Kilimanjaro arranges all airport transfers. We meet you at arrivals at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) with a sign and transfer you directly to your Arusha hotel. The drive takes 40โ€“50 minutes on good roads. If you are arriving on an international flight and connecting to the mountain the same day, we will have you at the climb start point by early afternoon.
Should I do a road transfer or fly from Arusha to the Serengeti?
Road transfer (4โ€“5 hours): included in standard packages and highly recommended for first-time safari clients because the route passes through Ngorongoro Conservation Area โ€” you will see wildlife (giraffe, zebra, buffalo, and sometimes elephant) before you reach the main Serengeti park. Flight (45 minutes, $187โ€“$291): worth the upgrade if you are short on time, you found the mountain physically demanding, or you want to reach the northern Serengeti Mara River crossing zone directly. We book the flight through our local airline contacts.
Where does my luggage go during the safari?
During the climb: your large suitcase or duffel bag is stored at our Arusha office at no charge. You bring only your day pack (8โ€“15 kg) on the mountain. During the safari: your luggage travels with you in the roof rack of the Land Cruiser. If you fly from Arusha to the Serengeti, there is a strict 15 kg soft bag limit per person on the light aircraft โ€” we provide soft bags if needed, or bring your own. Excess luggage continues by road with the ground crew.
What happens if my international flight arrives late โ€” can I start the climb the next morning?
Usually yes. Most international flights land at JRO between 14:00 and 20:00. With an evening arrival, you transfer to Arusha, have dinner, and sleep. We start the climb briefing that evening or early the next morning depending on your route. For the Machame Route (7 days), the first day begins at Machame Gate at 9:00am โ€” you can comfortably make this even if you landed the evening before. For early morning flights, let us know and we will adjust the itinerary accordingly.
Do I need a visa for Tanzania?
Most nationalities can obtain a tourist visa on arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport ($52, payable in USD) or apply for an e-visa online at immigration.gov.tz before departure. US citizens do not need a visa for stays under 90 days. UK, EU, Australian, and Canadian citizens pay $52 on arrival. The e-visa is recommended as it reduces queuing time at immigration. Your passport must be valid for 6+ months beyond your intended departure date and have at least one blank page.
How much money do I need for tips and extras?
Tipping in Tanzania is customary but not obligatory. The guideline for a 7-day Kilimanjaro climb is $208โ€“$364 total per climber (lead guide $125โ€“$187, assistant guides $42โ€“$83, porters $42โ€“$94 โ€” distributed by the lead guide). For a 4-day safari, safari guide tips run $83โ€“$156 per group. Outside of tips, budget for souvenirs (Arusha has good markets), personal purchases, and any emergency expenses. ATM cards work in Arusha; cash (Tanzanian shillings or USD) is needed in the parks and smaller towns.
