Tanzania's safari parks — the Northern Circuit's iconic plains from above

Post-Kili Safari Planning

Tanzania Safari Parks Guide

From the iconic Serengeti to the remote chimpanzee forests of Mahale — which parks belong in your post-Kilimanjaro safari?

After the Summit, the Wildlife

You are climbing Kilimanjaro. The next question — which safari parks should you add? Tanzania has more safari park diversity than any other country in Africa. The Northern Circuit alone covers three completely different ecosystems. Add the Southern and Western circuits, and you have a range of experiences from the most iconic wildlife concentrations on earth to genuinely unexplored wilderness.

This guide covers every major safari park that pairs with a Kilimanjaro climb. It is designed to help you decide — based on your experience level, time available, budget, and what you most want to see. All of these parks are reachable from Arusha. All of them can be combined in longer itineraries. None of them are wrong choices.

Tanzania's Three Safari Circuits

Southern Circuit

3-5 days$$

Parks: Ruaha, Katavi, Nyerere (Selous)

Best for: Remote wilderness, repeat visitors, elephant lovers

Kili pairing: Ideal as extension after Northern Circuit — adds 3-5 days

Western / Chimp Circuit

2-3 days minimum$$$$

Parks: Mahale Mountains, Gombe Stream

Best for: Primate enthusiasts, most remote experience in Tanzania

Kili pairing: Best combined with Southern Circuit — adds 3-4 days

Northern Circuit

Cost

$$$

Great Migration, big cats, first safari, iconic Tanzania

Wildlife highlights

  • Wildebeest, zebra, gazelle (Great Migration)
  • Lion, leopard, cheetah
  • Elephant, buffalo, hippo
  • Crocodile (Grumeti and Mara Rivers)

Best season

Year-round — river crossings July-Nov, calving Feb-Mar

Crowd level

High in peak season (Jul-Oct)

Pairing with Kilimanjaro

Natural pairing — Serengeti is a 5-6 hour drive from Kilimanjaro, or a 90-minute flight

Non-negotiable for first-timers. Return visitors should explore the western corridor and northern Serengeti.

Northern Circuit

Ngorongoro Crater

Cost

$$$ (higher park fee than any other Tanzania park)

Best for

Big Five in one day, highest wildlife density in Africa

Wildlife highlights

  • Black rhino (highest density anywhere)
  • Lion, hyena, leopard
  • Elephant, buffalo, flamingo (in crater lake)
  • Cheetah on the rim slopes

Best season

Year-round — best for rhino is dry season (Jun-Oct)

Crowd level

High — crater floor has vehicle limits but the impact is noticeable in peak season

Pairing with Kilimanjaro

Closest major park to Arusha — 2.5 hour drive. Ideal as first or last night of safari

The single best wildlife viewing experience per square kilometre in Africa. Do not skip it.

Northern Circuit

Tarangire National Park

Cost

$$

Best for

Elephant herds, birding, quiet relative to Serengeti

Wildlife highlights

  • Elephant herds (300-500 in dry season)
  • Tree-climbing lions
  • Buffalo colonies, waterbuck, impala
  • 550+ bird species including Asio and yellow-collared lovebird

Best season

Jul-Oct for elephant concentration — year-round for birding

Crowd level

Low to moderate — dramatically quieter than Serengeti

Pairing with Kilimanjaro

90 minutes from Arusha — works as a first or last day addition, or a rest day between longer parks

Underrated and undervisited. A half-day in Tarangire is one of the best wildlife experiences per hour in Tanzania.

Southern Circuit

The best value park in Tanzania. Exceptional wildlife, lower costs, almost no vehicles.

Southern Circuit

Wildlife highlights

  • Hippo (largest concentrations in Africa)
  • Crocodile (massive individuals in the Katuma River)
  • Lion, leopard, hyena
  • Wild dog denning sites (high success rate)

Best season

Jun-Oct — floodplains are accessible and wildlife concentrates

Crowd level

Extremely low — approximately 3,000 visitors per year

Pairing with Kilimanjaro

Typically combined with Ruaha (3-4 hour drive or charter flight). Adds 2-3 extra days to a Southern Circuit itinerary

For experienced Africa travellers who have done the Northern Circuit and want something genuinely wild.

Southern / Western Circuit

Mahale Mountains

Cost

$$$$ (high permit cost, limited availability)

Best for

Chimpanzee trekking, Lake Tanganyika, most remote experience in Tanzania

Wildlife highlights

  • 800+ chimpanzees (habituated)
  • Blue monkey, red colobus, yellow baboon
  • Lake Tanganyika's 2,000+ fish species
  • African fish eagle, Livingstone's flycatcher

Best season

Jun-Dec for chimp trekking — dry months give easiest access

Crowd level

Very low — permit limits enforced strictly

Pairing with Kilimanjaro

Light aircraft from Arusha (via Dar or Katavi) + 2-hour boat ride. Often combined with Katavi for the complete remote Tanzania experience

The most unusual wildlife experience in Tanzania. Combine with Katavi for the trip of a lifetime after Kilimanjaro.
