How to Plan a Kilimanjaro + Safari Trip
From 12 months out to standing on Africa's rooftop — the complete timeline for climbing Kilimanjaro and adding a Northern Circuit safari. No vague advice. Just what to do, and when.
A combined Kilimanjaro climb and Tanzania safari is one of the world's most rewarding travel experiences — and one of the most logistically complex to organise. You're coordinating Park permits, climbing routes, safari logistics, accommodation, international flights, gear, vaccinations, and fitness preparation simultaneously. This guide breaks it down month by month, so nothing falls through the cracks.
When Should You Start Planning?
Best time to book peak season
June–October camps and summit permits fill months in advance. Starting early gives you the widest choice of dates, routes, and accommodation tiers.
Good for shoulder season
January–February or November still offer excellent wildlife and climbing conditions. Some availability remains — message us to check.
Last-minute openings possible
Low season (April–May) occasionally has last-minute availability. Peak season last-minute is rare — most permits and camps are fully booked.

Plan Your Kilimanjaro Safari 2026: Expert 6-Step Guide
This is the most consequential decision you'll make. Your operator handles everything — Park fees, climbing permits, guides, food, accommodation on the mountain, and all safari logistics. A good operator means the difference between reaching Uhuru Peak and turning back at Barranco Wall. At Safari Kilimanjaro, we've been running climbs since 1978 from our base in Arusha. We own our vehicles, employ our own guides, and use no brokers. Ask specifically: Who is my point of contact on the mountain? What is their summit success rate? Do they carry supplemental oxygen?

10–11 Months Out

The route you choose determines your summit probability. Lemosho (8 days on the mountain) offers a 95%+ summit rate — the highest of any route. Machame (7 days) is more scenically dramatic but has a lower success rate (~85%) because of the steeper Western Breach section. Rongai (7 days) is the quietest route, approached from the north. For the safari: pair Lemosho or Machame with a 3–4 day Northern Circuit (Serengeti + Ngorongoro + Tarangire). Season affects both: July–October means Great Migration but peak prices; January–February means Ndutu calving and lower costs.

8–9 Months Out

International flights to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) fill up fast for peak season. Turkish Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, and Qatar Airways all operate routes via their hubs. Average economy return: $832–1,400 from Europe, $1,248–1,800 from North America. At this stage, lock in your operator with a deposit (typically 20–30% of the total price). Safari Kilimanjaro requires a deposit to secure Park climbing permits, which are issued based on available quota. Without confirmed permits, you cannot climb — and peak-season permits sell out.
6–7 Months Out
Plan Your Kilimanjaro Safari 2026: Expert 6-Step Guide
Climbing Kilimanjaro is 80% cardiovascular and 20% willpower. At altitude, your body's ability to use oxygen drops dramatically — and no amount of mountaineering skill compensates for poor fitness. Start a structured programme now: 3–4 cardio sessions per week (hiking, running, cycling), 1–2 strength sessions focused on legs and core, and one long weekend hike per month if possible. The Montane VIA Trail running shoe is the single most important gear investment — break it in over 100km before your climb. Altitude sickness is unpredictable, but fitter climbers consistently report a better experience.

4–5 Months Out

Three documents need attention: (1) Passport — ensure it has 6+ months validity and at least one blank page. (2) Vaccinations — Yellow Fever is required if arriving from an endemic zone; discuss Malaria prophylaxis with your doctor. (3) Travel insurance — your policy MUST explicitly cover high-altitude climbing (above 4,000m) and medical evacuation by helicopter. Many standard policies exclude these. Providers like Battleface, World Nomads, and Safety Wing offer specific Kilimanjaro policies. Keep digital copies in your phone and email originals to a trusted contact.

2–3 Months Out
Plan Your Kilimanjaro Safari 2026: Expert 6-Step Guide
Your operator provides: sleeping bag, mattress, tent, all meals on the mountain, drinking water, and emergency equipment including supplemental oxygen. You need to bring: quality broken-in hiking boots, thermal layers (base, mid, outer), down jacket for summit night (-20C wind chill), waterproof jacket and trousers, headlamp with extra batteries, 60–80L duffel bag (your main luggage goes by porters), and a daypack (30–40L). Sun protection is critical — the equatorial sun at altitude burns fast. We provide a full kit list when you book.
6–8 Weeks Out
Plan Your Kilimanjaro Safari 2026: Expert 6-Step Guide
Your operator confirms all Park fees, climbing permits, and safari vehicle. You'll receive a detailed kit list, a physical meeting agenda for your pre-climb briefing in Arusha, and your climb and safari itinerary. Now is the time to: notify your bank of travel dates and countries, arrange airport transfers (Safari Kilimanjaro includes these), download offline Maps.me for the region, and brief your family on communication plans — there is limited phone signal on the mountain. Confirm dietary requirements with your operator.
2–4 Weeks Out

Tapering is key. Reduce training volume by 40% but maintain intensity. Your muscles need recovery time before the climb, not more stress. Mentally: visualise summit night. The 1,400m final ascent from Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak is the hardest part — it starts at midnight, in freezing temperatures, with 40% less oxygen than sea level. Your guides will tell you: slow and steady wins. Pole pole (Swahili for 'slowly slowly') isn't just advice — it's the strategy that gets people to the top. Read accounts from people who summited. Know that the descent, though long, is manageable.
Arrival Week — Days 1–2
Plan Your Kilimanjaro Safari 2026: Expert 6-Step Guide
Arusha sits at 1,400m — a useful buffer before the mountain. Spend your first day resting, hydrating, and adjusting. A city tour or coffee plantation visit is a gentle way to ease in. In the evening, you'll meet your climb guide team at our Arusha office for a full equipment check and briefing. We show you how to layer your kit, distribute weight between your daypack and duffel, and what to expect on the mountain. Dinner is at a local Arusha restaurant — red meat and carbs are your friends now. No alcohol. Hydrate aggressively.
Days 3–10 — The Climb
Plan Your Kilimanjaro Safari 2026: Expert 6-Step Guide
Days 3–6 take you through five distinct climate zones: cultivated farmland, rainforest, alpine moorland, alpine desert, and finally the arctic zone at the summit. Each day involves 4–8 hours of walking, stopping at designated camps. Your guides monitor every climber twice daily for altitude symptoms — no one pushes through severe AMS. On summit night, you wake at 11pm, gear up in the dark, and begin the final push. You reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m) as the African sun rises over the continent. The descent to Kibo Hut takes 4–6 hours. Then you drop to Millenium Camp (3,800m) for a few hours of sleep before continuing down.

Day 11 — Rest Day
Plan Your Kilimanjaro Safari 2026: Expert 6-Step Guide
After descending from the mountain, you spend this day in Arusha at a comfortable hotel. Your body has been at altitude for 8 days. Hot shower, cold beer, a proper mattress — these simple things feel extraordinary. Your safari guide arrives for an initial briefing and to check your camera gear. The wildlife you're about to see will be far more varied than what you observed on the mountain. Rest. Hydrate. Eat everything. Tomorrow begins something entirely different.
Days 12–15 — The Safari
Plan Your Kilimanjaro Safari 2026: Expert 6-Step Guide
Day 12: Depart Arusha after breakfast, drive to Tarangire National Park. Known for its massive elephant herds and cathedral-like baobab forest, Tarangire is Tanzania's most underrated park. Overnight at a nearby lodge. Day 13: Drive to the Serengeti via Ngorongoro Crater viewpoint (no descending on this itinerary — the crater floor is saved for day 14). Evening game drive in the Central Serengeti. Day 14: Full day in the Serengeti — this is where Tanzania's wildlife reputation is earned. Big Five, cheetah, wildebeest, giraffe. Sunset from a private kopje. Day 15: Sunrise game drive, then descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for the world's most concentrated wildlife viewing. By late afternoon, you're back in Arusha for your final dinner.

Common Questions
Planning questions answered
How far in advance should I book a Kilimanjaro + Safari combo?
For peak season (June–October), we recommend starting your planning 6–10 months before your travel date. Route permits, summit camps, and safari lodge availability all fill months in advance. The good news: if you start early, you have the widest choice of dates, routes, and accommodation tiers. Even for shoulder season (January–February or November), 3–4 months ahead gives you the best selection. Message us to check availability for your preferred dates — no commitment needed.
What is the total cost of a combined Kilimanjaro climb and Tanzania safari?
A 10-day combo (7-day climb + 3-day safari) starts from $3,952 per person. A 14-day combo (8-day Lemosho + 4-day Northern Circuit) starts from $5,096 per person. These prices include Park fees, accommodation, meals, guide, and all ground transport. International flights are separate (typically $832–$1,456 from Europe, $1,248–$1,872 from North America). See our full cost breakdown for climbing Kilimanjaro for a detailed comparison of what's included and where the price ranges come from.
Do I need a visa for Tanzania?
Most nationalities get a tourist visa on arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Dar es Salaam. The visa costs $52 for US passport holders, $104 for most European passport holders. You need a return ticket, proof of accommodation, and at least 6 months validity on your passport. For the climb, we handle the climbing permit separately — it's included in your package price.
How fit do I need to be for a Kilimanjaro + Safari?
For the safari portion: moderate fitness is fine. Game drives involve some walking, but nothing strenuous. For Kilimanjaro: you need cardiovascular endurance and leg strength. We recommend 4–6 months of preparation including hiking, running, cycling, or swimming. The fitter you are, the more you'll enjoy the experience. Our 8-day Lemosho route offers the best summit success rate (95%+) because of its gradual elevation profile.
What vaccinations do I need for Tanzania?
Yellow fever vaccination is required if arriving from a yellow fever zone (including some neighbouring countries). Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended — discuss with your doctor. Standard vaccinations (Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid, Tetanus, Polio) are advisable. Your safari vehicle uses mosquito nets on windows and you're in higher-elevation areas where malaria risk is lower than in lowland areas.
Can I combine Kilimanjaro climbing with the Great Migration?
Yes — timing is everything. The Great Migration river crossings happen in the Northern Serengeti from July to October. To combine a Kili summit with the migration, plan for September. By then the mountain is past its coldest and wettest, and the Serengeti is at peak wildlife action. You'll need a minimum of 13 days (8-day climb + 4-day Northern Circuit including Northern Serengeti). See our 13-day Kilimanjaro + migration safari itinerary for details.
