The Machame Route accounts for roughly half of all Kilimanjaro climbs. It is popular because it works — a 6-day ascent that achieves 85% summit success in fit hikers, passing through some of the most dramatic scenery on the mountain along the way.
Unlike the Marangu route (hut-based, lower success rate), Machame uses tents and follows a more varied southern circuit approach. The Barranco Wall, the Lava Tower acclimatisation day, and the final summit push via Barafu are defining Machame experiences that draw climbers back year after year.

The 9-day Machame achieves approximately 90% summit success vs. 85% for the tighter 7-day version. For just $624 more per person, the extra day is genuinely worthwhile.
Is 7 days on Machame enough to summit?
Yes, but it is tight. The 6-day Machame itinerary has a lower margin for error than the 7 or 8-day options. Your fitness, hydration, nutrition, and pacing on summit night are all critical variables. If you are already a strong hiker with recent multi-day altitude experience, 7 days is achievable. If you are a genuine first-timer or have any cardiovascular concerns, the 9-day option at $3,952 is better value over the long run.
Why does Machame have a higher summit rate than Marangu?
Machame's ascent profile is superior for acclimatisation. It climbs higher during the day (Lava Tower at 4,600m) before descending to sleep at Barranco (3,900m) — the 'climb high, sleep low' principle. Marangu climbs continuously to Hutte (3,720m) without this variation, making altitude sickness more likely. Machame's 85% summit rate vs. Marangu's 65% is the physiological consequence of this difference.
Can I add the Serengeti to the Machame combo?
Yes — the 9-day option can be extended to include the Serengeti for an additional $291–$364 per person (park fees and vehicle). The drive from Ngorongoro to the Serengeti is 2–3 hours. Why do the safari after the Machame climb?
