The Choice

Two routes. One mountain. Very different experiences.

Machame and Marangu are by far the most climbed Kilimanjaro routes โ€” together accounting for roughly 70% of all summits. They represent a genuine fork in every climber's planning process. The decision matters: it affects your summit chances, your daily comfort, the scenery you see, and your total Tanzania trip cost.

We have guided both routes thousands of times. The honest answer is that Machame is the better route for most climbers โ€” but Marangu has legitimate use cases, and we will make that case clearly here rather than simply steering you toward our most popular option.

The fundamental difference is acclimatisation. Machame takes 8 days โ€” Marangu takes 5 or 6. The additional days on Machame allow your body more time to adjust to altitude before the summit push. Altitude sickness is the primary reason climbers fail to summit, and the longer route directly addresses this physiological reality.

Marangu is cheaper and more direct. It uses mountain huts rather than tents. But the compressed timeline is a genuine risk factor, not a minor inconvenience. The data on summit success rates reflects this.

Machame Route

The climber's choice

Machame is the most climbed route on Kilimanjaro for good reason. An 8-day itinerary through five distinct climate zones, with a rest day at Barranco Camp (3,900m) that is specifically designed to improve acclimatisation and summit chances. The Barranco Wall scramble on Day 6 is one of the most memorable moments of any Kilimanjaro climb.

The scenery on Machame is unmatched โ€” rainforest giving way to alpine desert, with views of the Southern Icefield that are simply not available from the Marangu northern slope. The terrain variety keeps each day interesting. The 85-90% summit success rate on the 8-day itinerary reflects what experienced guides know: more days on the mountain means a better chance of standing at Uhuru Peak.

Marangu Route

The direct choice

Marangu is the oldest established route on Kilimanjaro, and the only one that uses permanent mountain huts rather than tents. This is its defining feature โ€” each hut has 4-8 bunks, a mattress, and electricity. You do not need to set up camp each night, which some climbers find appealing. The route follows the northern slope more directly, without the scenic variety of Machame.

The 6-day Marangu itinerary is faster and cheaper than Machame. But the compressed acclimatisation schedule is a genuine concern. If you are fit, under 45, and have no history of altitude issues, Marangu can work. However, the 60-65% summit success rate reflects the difficulty of adjusting to altitude in six days. Many operators offer a 5-day Marangu โ€” we recommend against this. The 5-day pushes the already compressed timeline further and dramatically increases altitude illness risk.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Which route has the higher summit success rate?

Machame consistently achieves higher summit success rates than Marangu โ€” typically 85-90% versus 60-65%. The main reason is the acclimatisation profile. Machame uses an 8-day ascent with a crucial rest day at Barranco Camp (3,900m), allowing your body to adjust before the final summit push. Marangu's shorter 5-6 day itinerary compresses the ascent, giving less time for acclimatisation. Altitude illness is the primary cause of summit failure, and the Machame schedule directly addresses this.

Is Machame more expensive than Marangu?

Yes, Machame costs $208-400 more per person than Marangu on equivalent itinerary lengths. The price difference reflects the longer route (more camping fees, more food to porter up the mountain, more staff days) and the fact that Machame requires higher-quality tented accommodation rather than Marangu's mountain hut system. When comparing 7-day Machame to 6-day Marangu, the gap narrows to roughly $104-200. The better question is not which is cheaper โ€” it is which gives you the best chance of summiting.

Is Marangu route easier because it has huts?

Not necessarily. While Marangu huts eliminate the need to set up a tent each night, the route is steeper in places and the shorter timeline creates real acclimatisation challenges. The huts at Mandara (2,700m), Horombo (3,700m), and Kibo (4,700m) are basic โ€” 4-8 bunk beds per room, no heating, cold nights above 3,000m. The perceived comfort of huts is offset by the faster altitude gain. Experienced guides consistently report that Machame climbers arrive at the summit night in better condition because of the superior acclimatisation schedule.

Can I combine Machame with a safari?

Absolutely โ€” and this is the most popular combination. A 7-day Machame climb followed by a 4-5 day Northern Circuit safari (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire) is our most requested package. The safari serves as both a reward after the climb and a continuation of your Tanzania experience. Most climbers feel recovered enough for game drives the day after descending from Kibo. We run these two parts of the trip as a seamless itinerary with a single operator.

Which route has better scenery?

Machame is widely considered the most scenically beautiful route on Kilimanjaro. The 8-day itinerary takes you through five distinct climate zones: cultivated farmland, rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and arctic summit. The ascent via the southern slope delivers more varied terrain, dramatic views of the Southern Icefield, and the iconic Barranco Wall scramble. Marangu follows a more direct northern slope path with less dramatic terrain variation. If scenery is a priority, Machame is the clear choice.

Is the Barranco Wall on Machame dangerous?

The Barranco Wall โ€” also called the Breakfast Wall โ€” is a steep scramble of approximately 300 vertical metres at the start of Day 6. It is not technical climbing (no ropes required) but it is physically demanding and exposed in places. Some people find the scramble intimidating, but with an experienced guide and proper footwear, it is manageable for anyone with reasonable fitness. The wall is one of the most memorable parts of the Machame route. Marangu does not include the Barranco Wall.
