Tanzania Beach Extension
Mafia Island, Tanzania
Tanzania's most unspoiled marine paradise. Whale shark encounters, pristine diving, and a pace of life that has not changed in decades. The perfect extension after your Kilimanjaro climb or Serengeti safari.
When travellers think of Tanzania, they think of Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater. Almost nobody mentions Mafia Island — and that is precisely why it has remained one of East Africa's best-kept secrets.
Mafia Island sits off Tanzania's Indian Ocean coast, south of Zanzibar, within the Mafia Island Marine Park — Tanzania's first marine park, established in 1995. The island is roughly 50 km long and 20 km wide, with a population of around 50,000 people who live primarily from fishing and small-scale agriculture. Tourism is limited by design: there are no large resorts, no beach parties, and no crowds. What there is, is extraordinary.
The island's main draw is the chance to swim with whale sharks — the world's largest fish — in the shallow waters of the Mafia archipelago between October and March each year. Add exceptional diving, pristine mangrove forests, and an unhurried pace of life that feels genuinely remote, and you have one of Tanzania's most rewarding travel experiences.
What Makes Mafia Special
Why Go to Mafia Island Instead of Zanzibar?
Swim with Whale Sharks
From October to March, juvenile whale sharks — measuring 4-10 metres — gather in the shallow lagoon of the Mafia archipelago. Swimming with them is one of the most breathtaking experiences in African wildlife tourism.
Diving Excellence
Mafia's dive sites are rated among the best in the Indian Ocean. Deep pinnacles, coral gardens, and consistent big fish encounters — including reef sharks, rays, and eagle rays. Far fewer divers than Zanzibar or Mnemba.
Genuine Remote Feel
No beach parties, no crowds, no resort sprawl. Mafia retains the feel of a working fishing island. The lodges are small, the beaches are empty, and the local community is present without being intrusive.
Marine Park Protection
The Mafia Island Marine Park was Tanzania's first marine protected area. The waters are actively managed, which means the coral and fish populations are healthier than at heavily visited Zanzibar.
Dhow Sailing
Traditional dhow sailing around the archipelago is part of the Mafia experience. Day trips to remote sandbanks, snorkeling reefs accessible only by boat, and sunsets over the lagoon aboard a wooden dhow.
Birdwatching
Mafia is a designated Important Bird Area. The island and its mangroves support over 200 bird species, including the endemic Mafia weaver and a variety of waders, kingfishers, and raptors.
October – March
Swimming with Whale Sharks
The Mafia archipelago is one of the few places in the world where you can reliably swim with juvenile whale sharks in their natural feeding grounds. Between October and March, these enormous but harmless creatures — they eat only plankton — gather in the shallow lagoon channels of the marine park.
The sharks are not fed or attracted by food. They are simply there, filter-feeding on plankton in the rich tidal waters between the islands. You snorkel alongside them, treading water as they glide past at close range — sometimes 2-3 metres away. An adult whale shark can be 10 metres long. The scale is humbling.
Maximum group size for whale shark encounters is 6 guests in the water at a time. Our guides manage the encounter carefully to minimise disturbance. No scuba gear is permitted during whale shark encounters — snorkelling only.

Diving at Mafia Island
Mafia is increasingly recognised as one of Tanzania's premier dive destinations, though it remains far less visited than Zanzibar's dive sites. The marine park designation means fish populations are robust and the coral is in good condition.

Dive Certification Requirements
Most Mafia dive sites are suitable for Open Water certified divers and above. The deep pinnacles require Advanced Open Water or equivalent. If you are not certified, Mafia is an excellent place to complete your PADI Open Water course — small groups, patient instructors, and warm water year-round (27–30°C).
Planning Your Mafia Island Extension
Getting There
From Dar es Salaam: Safari Air and Coastal Travels operate small charter flights to Mafia Island Airport (approximately 30 minutes). Flights are weather-dependent and sometimes delayed — build in a buffer day if you have international connections.
By boat: A scheduled dhow service runs between Zanzibar and Mafia on selected days (approximately 4-5 hours). Private dhow charters are also available and can be arranged as part of your package.
Best Time to Visit
Whale shark season: October – March (peak November–December). Water temperature: 27–30°C.
Diving: Year-round, though October–April offers the best water clarity. May–September can have slightly rougher seas.
Where to Stay
Mafia's accommodation is deliberately low-key. Think small beach bungalows, locally owned guesthouses, and one or two mid-range island lodges. There are no large resorts. This is part of the appeal.
Options range from basic but charming lakeside rooms (from $52/night) to comfortable beachfront bandas (from $156/night). We will match your preferences and budget to the best available option.
How Long to Stay
Minimum: 3 nights / 4 days — enough for whale shark encounter, one dive or snorkel trip, and time to relax.
Ideal: 5–7 nights — allows for multiple dives, a dhow day trip, birdwatching, and genuine relaxation after a Kilimanjaro climb or safari.
Combining Mafia Island With a Kilimanjaro Climb or Safari
Mafia Island works as either the start or the end of your Tanzania trip. Here is how to fit it into a larger itinerary.
After a Kilimanjaro Climb
A Kilimanjaro climb followed by Mafia Island is one of the great recovery itineraries. You have spent 7-9 days on the mountain; your body is tired but your spirit is high. Mafia's warm water, gentle pace, and zero agenda is exactly what the doctor ordered. Fly from Arusha → Dar es Salaam → Mafia. Allow 4-5 days on the island after your climb.
After a Serengeti Safari
From the northern safari circuit, you typically fly from the Serengeti or Ngorongoro to Dar es Salaam, then connect to Mafia (30 minutes). This is a natural end point: the safari finishes, you decompress on the beach for a few days, then fly home refreshed. Allow 4-5 days for the full Mafia experience.
Mafia vs. Zanzibar
If you are choosing between Mafia and Zanzibar for a post-safari extension: Zanzibar offers more infrastructure, better-known beaches, and a wider range of accommodation. Mafia offers genuine remoteness, whale sharks, and better diving. If your priority is relaxation and beach time, Zanzibar. If you want an active wildlife experience with a marine focus, Mafia.
Frequently Asked Questions — Mafia Island Tanzania
Is Mafia Island safe for tourists?+
Yes. Mafia is a quiet, welcoming island with a low crime rate. The main risk is standard travel advice: secure your valuables, follow your lodge's guidance on swimming conditions, and use a registered tour operator. The marine park wardens are active and professional.
Do I need a visa for Mafia Island?+
Mafia Island is part of Tanzania — you need the same visa as for the mainland. Most nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival at Dar es Salaam International Airport, or apply in advance via the Tanzanian embassy. The visa covers both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar (including Mafia).
Can non-swimmers visit Mafia Island?+
Absolutely. You do not need to swim to enjoy Mafia. Dhow trips, birdwatching, cultural village visits, and simply relaxing on empty beaches are all available to non-swimmers. The whale shark encounter is snorkelling-based, but non-swimmers can view from the boat while others are in the water.
What is the food like on Mafia Island?+
The lodges serve fresh seafood — snapper, kingfish, octopus, and lobster when in season — alongside rice, cassava, and local vegetables. Dietary restrictions can be accommodated with advance notice. Do not expect international cuisine or wide-ranging menus — the food is local, fresh, and honest.
How does Mafia Island compare to Zanzibar for a beach extension?+
Zanzibar is better known, more developed, and offers a wider range of accommodation and activities. Mafia is quieter, more remote, and better for wildlife-focused marine experiences (whale sharks, diving). If you have already been to Zanzibar, or if you prioritise marine wildlife over beach infrastructure, Mafia is the better choice.
Is there malaria on Mafia Island?+
Mafia Island is a low-risk malaria area compared to mainland Tanzania. However, mosquito avoidance measures are still recommended: use DEET repellent in the evenings, sleep under a net, and consult your travel health clinic about prophylactic medication before your trip.
What should I pack for Mafia Island?+
Light clothing, swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent, a rash guard or UV-protective shirt for snorkelling, and waterproof bags for boat trips. If you dive, bring your certification card. A good underwater camera (or waterproof phone case) is highly recommended for whale shark encounters.
Can I use my phone on Mafia Island?+
Vodacom and Airtel have mobile coverage on Mafia Island, though signal strength varies. Most lodges have Wi-Fi in the main areas, though it is slow. For international connections, consider a local SIM card in Dar es Salaam before heading to the island.
