Safari vehicle at golden hour in Tanzania's Mikumi National Park — lions visible on floodplain

Southern Circuit Safari

Mikumi National Park, Tanzania

Tanzania's most accessible southern park — excellent lion and elephant sightings, massive hippo pods, and zero crowds. Perfect companion to a Kilimanjaro climb.

Mikumi National Park (3,230 km²) is Tanzania's fourth-largest national park and one of the most accessible wildlife destinations south of the northern circuit. Located between Morogoro and the Selous Game Reserve, Mikumi sits within the larger Mikumi-Selous ecosystem — a wildlife corridor that holds significant populations of lions, elephants, African wild dogs, and over 400 bird species. A Mikumi safari typically runs 3–4 days and combines naturally with a Kilimanjaro climb — either before you summit or after you descend.

Wildlife in Mikumi

Mikumi holds substantial populations of Tanzania's most sought-after wildlife

Lions

Large prides with high success rates; Mikumi lions are known for their visibility on the main Mkwajuni road

Elephants

Family herds of 20–50; the park has an estimated 4,000+ elephants and is one of Tanzania's most reliable elephant-viewing parks

Giraffes

Masai giraffes common throughout; often seen at close range near waterholes

Zebras

Abundant on the floodplain grasslands alongside wildebeest and buffalo herds

Hippos

Pod of 200+ hippos in the Mindu Dam — one of Tanzania's largest hippo populations

Crocodiles

Large Nile crocodiles in the Hippo Pool area; visible on boat safari excursions

Wild Dogs

Mikumi holds one of Tanzania's few viable wild dog populations — sightings possible but not guaranteed

Bird Species

400+ species recorded; African fish eagle, Lilian's lovebird, yellow-throated sandgrouse

Why Add Mikumi to Your Kilimanjaro Trip?

Closer Than the Northern Circuit

Mikumi is 4–5 hours from Arusha (vs 6–7 hours to the Serengeti). After the physical demands of a Kilimanjaro climb, the shorter drive to Mikumi means less road fatigue before your wildlife viewing.

Exceptional Lion Sightings

Mikumi's lions are among the most visible in Tanzania. The Mkwajuni floodplain road runs through prime lion habitat, and large prides (15–20 individuals) are regularly seen in the open grasslands. Guided game drives at dawn maximise your chances.

Massive Hippo Pods

The Mindu Dam at Hippo Pool holds one of Tanzania's largest hippo populations — over 200 individuals in a single pod. Boat safaris bring you within metres of these enormous animals. It is one of the most reliable hippo experiences in East Africa.

Wild Dogs Possible

Mikumi holds one of Tanzania's few viable African wild dog populations. Sightings are never guaranteed — wild dogs are wide-ranging and elusive — but Mikumi is one of the most reliable places in Tanzania to have a chance. Combined with Ruaha (which has a strong pack), Mikumi is a credible wild dog destination.

Far Fewer Crowds Than the North

Unlike the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, Mikumi receives a fraction of the visitor numbers. During peak season, you may go an entire game drive without encountering another tourist vehicle. The safari experience feels genuinely wild.

Combine with Selous

Mikumi and Selous Game Reserve are 30 minutes apart by light aircraft. A combined Mikumi + Selous itinerary gives you the best of the southern circuit in one trip — lions and hippos in Mikumi, wild dogs and boat safaris in Selous, and the world's largest protected wildlife area as your backdrop.

Best Time to Visit Mikumi

June–October (Dry Season)

Prime safari season. Wildlife concentrates around waterholes and the floodplain grasses thin out, making animals easier to spot. September is the standout month — short grass, high predator activity, excellent visibility.

Best for: General game viewing, lion sightings, elephant herds, photography

November–May (Green Season)

Lush landscapes, newborn antelope calves, and exceptional birding. Migratory birds arrive from Europe and Asia. The park is green and photogenic. Some roads become passable only with 4WD. Lower prices at camps and lodges.

Best for: Birding, photography, budget travellers, fewer crowds

Mikumi National Park FAQ

Where is Mikumi National Park located?+
Mikumi National Park is in south-central Tanzania, straddling the Mikumi-Selous ecosystem between the Uluguru Mountains to the east and the Ikeuta Mountains to the west. The park covers 3,230 km² and is the fourth-largest national park in Tanzania. The nearest major town is Morogoro (60km), and Mikumi is approximately 300km from Dar es Salaam — about a 4-hour drive.
How do I get to Mikumi from Kilimanjaro?+
The most practical route: fly or drive from Kilimanjaro/Arusha to Dar es Salaam after your climb, then drive 4 hours north to Mikumi (or fly to Dar es Salaam and drive). Mikumi is 280km from the northern circuit — a 5–6 hour drive from the Ngorongoro area. Alternatively, fly Dar es Salaam to Mikumi via light aircraft (Rural Air Service and Auric Air operate flights). Mikumi is increasingly popular as an add-on to northern circuit itineraries due to improved road access.
What is the best time to visit Mikumi?+
The dry season (June–October) is prime safari time in Mikumi. Animals concentrate around water sources and the floodplain grasslands offer exceptional game viewing. September is particularly good — the grass is shorter, wildlife is more visible, and predator sightings are at their highest. The wet season (November–May) brings lush green landscapes, excellent birding (migratory species arrive), newborn antelope calves, and lower prices. Mikumi is accessible year-round but some roads become difficult after heavy rain.
Can Mikumi be combined with a Kilimanjaro climb?+
Yes — Mikumi works well as either a pre-climb or post-climb safari destination. As a pre-climb destination, it is closer to Kilimanjaro than the northern circuit (4–5 hours from Arusha vs 6–7 hours to Serengeti) and offers excellent wildlife without the long drive. As a post-climb destination, it provides a gentle wildlife experience after the physical demands of the mountain. Most Kili+Mikumi combiners allow 3–4 days for Mikumi.
What animals can I see in Mikumi?+
Mikumi is known for its large lion prides, substantial elephant population (4,000+), and the massive hippo pod in the Mindu Dam. Giraffes, zebras, buffalo, and wildebeest are commonly seen. Wild dogs are present but elusive. The birding is excellent, with over 400 species. Unlike the northern circuit, Mikumi rarely has the dense crowds of vehicles at wildlife sightings.
Is Mikumi better than the northern circuit (Serengeti/Ngorongoro)?+
Not better — different. The Serengeti and Ngorongoro offer higher wildlife density, the Wildebeest Migration, and Ngorongoro Crater's unique geology. Mikumi offers fewer crowds, lower costs, and equally reliable predator sightings (particularly lions). For travellers who have already done the northern circuit, or for those on a tighter budget who still want a quality wildlife experience, Mikumi is an excellent alternative. The wildlife is exceptional — the main difference is scale and the absence of a iconic geological feature like the Crater.
What activities are available in Mikumi?+
Standard game drives are the primary activity — the park's Mkwajuni road runs through excellent habitat. Boat safaris on the Mindu Dam offer a different perspective and close hippo and crocodile viewing. Walking safaris with an armed ranger are available. Mikumi also connects well with Selous Game Reserve (30-minute flight) for a combined southern circuit experience.
