After the summit, the reward
Private Safari After Kilimanjaro
You have earned this. A private vehicle, a guide who knows exactly where the lions are, and camps where the only noise is the bush at night. One operator, zero handoffs โ from the summit to the savanna.
Why go private
The difference between a safari and your safari
After six days on the mountain with a shared group, the privacy of a private safari is its own reward. No compromise on departure times. No waiting for other vehicles. Your guide's full attention, every moment. The wildlife viewing is the same โ the experience is transformed.
Private Safari After Kilimanjaro | Exclusive Wildlife
Decide when to leave, when to stop, how long to watch a leopard in a tree. No group's schedule to accommodate. No waiting.
Private Safari After Kilimanjaro | Exclusive Wildlife
By the second day, your guide understands your interests โ whether you are there for big cats, birds, or photography. They tailor the experience.
Private Safari After Kilimanjaro | Exclusive Wildlife
Champagne breakfast in the Serengeti. A private sundowner on the Ngorongoro rim. These moments are yours to create โ no one else's schedule to fit around.
The Northern Circuit
Three parks. Two Crater. One extraordinary safari.
After Kilimanjaro, we go north. Three hours from Arusha to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Five hours to the Serengeti. The parks are close enough that you can move between them, each offering a different wildlife experience.
2-3 hours from Arusha
Tarangire National Park
Elephants and ancient baobabs
Often overlooked in favour of the Serengeti, Tarangire is one of Tanzania's most under-rated parks. Massive elephant herds, ancient baobab trees, and a quieter atmosphere make it the perfect first safari day after the mountain.
Best for: Elephant herds, birdlife, baobab photography
3.5 hours from Arusha
Ngorongoro Crater
The world's largest inactive volcano
A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most wildlife-dense landscapes on earth. In the caldera, you will see lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo,...
Best for: Big Five, black rhino, crater viewpoint
45-min flight or 5-hour drive from Arusha
Serengeti National Park
Where the world was born
The Serengeti is why you came to Tanzania. Rolling golden plains as far as the eye can see, teeming with wildebeest, zebra, and the predators that...
Best for: Big cats, migration (seasonal), hot air balloon
4-day private safari
How we pair it with Kilimanjaro
After your summit, we build in a recovery night in Arusha, then head to the Northern Circuit. Four days is the minimum for a meaningful private safari; six is better.
Day 1
Private Safari After Kilimanjaro | Exclusive Wildlife
Descend from Kilimanjaro and transfer to Arusha. Your lodge is comfortable, quiet, and has a pool. Rest, eat well, and sleep. Your guide will brief you on the safari ahead. No rush โ this day is built in to the itinerary for a reason.
Day 2
Private Safari After Kilimanjaro | Exclusive Wildlife
After breakfast, depart for Tarangire. The park is approximately 2.5 hours from Arusha. Expect to see elephant herds, giraffes, and a good variety of plains game. Tarangire is quieter than the Serengeti โ the wildlife feels more intimate. Overnight at a small luxury tented camp near the park.
Day 3
Private Safari After Kilimanjaro | Exclusive Wildlife
Depart early for the crater. Descend 600m to the caldera floor for a full morning game drive. The crater has one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Africa. Return to your lodge on the crater rim in the late afternoon โ the view at sunset is extraordinary.
Day 4-5
Private Safari After Kilimanjaro | Exclusive Wildlife
Drive or fly to the Serengeti. Two days allows you to really explore: the central Serengeti for predator action, the northern sector for the migration (July-October), or the eastern plains for cheetah. Your private guide adjusts the route based on recent wildlife sightings and your preferences.

Private safari after Kilimanjaro โ FAQ
What makes a safari 'private' after Kilimanjaro?
A private safari means you have a dedicated vehicle and guide exclusively for your group โ no sharing with other travellers. After the shared experience of the mountain, this privacy is often exactly what people want. Your vehicle is for you alone: you set the departure time, the pace, where you stop, how long you spend watching a pride of lions. It is the difference between a taxi and a chauffeur.
How soon after Kilimanjaro can I go on safari?
Most people are ready to safari 1-2 days after descending from Kilimanjaro. The key recovery factor is altitude: once you are back below 2,000m, the headaches and fatigue fade quickly. By the time you reach the Serengeti or Ngorongoro, you will be eating normally, sleeping well, and ready to be in the bush. We always build in a rest night in Arusha between the climb and safari โ that evening meal and full night's sleep makes a significant difference.
What is the difference between a private safari and a group safari?
Group safaris share a vehicle with up to 7 other passengers, departing on fixed dates with a set itinerary. Private safaris are exclusively for your party โ whether that is two people or ten. The advantages are control (you decide everything), flexibility (change the plan on the day if the wildlife warrants it), and attention (your guide's full focus is on you). The trade-off is cost: private safaris are approximately 30-40% more expensive per person because you are covering the vehicle and guide cost alone rather than splitting it.
Which parks are best for a private safari after Kilimanjaro?
The Northern Circuit is the natural pairing: the Serengeti for big cats and the Great Migration (seasonal), Ngorongoro Crater for the density of wildlife, and optionally Tarangire for elephants and baobab scenery. These three parks are close to Arusha โ 2 hours to Tarangire, 3.5 hours to the Ngorongoro gate, 5 hours to the Serengeti (or a 45-minute light aircraft flight). We typically recommend 3-4 days of safari: one in Tarangire, one in Ngorongoro, and two in the Serengeti.
Is a private safari worth the extra cost after Kilimanjaro?
If your budget allows it, absolutely yes. After six days of sharing the mountain experience with other trekkers and guides, the privacy of a private safari is a genuine reward. You can celebrate your summit achievement without compromise โ linger over a champagne breakfast in the Serengeti, take a private sundowner in the crater, request a specific wildlife experience your guide can work into the route. For couples, families, or small groups of friends, the private format transforms the experience from a good safari to an exceptional one.
What wildlife can I expect to see on a private safari?
The Big Five โ lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, rhino โ are all achievable within the Northern Circuit parks, though rhino sightings require luck and a skilled tracker. The Serengeti offers the highest density of big cats anywhere in Africa; you will almost certainly see lion prides and likely cheetah. Ngorongoro Crater has excellent black rhino viewing and huge concentrations of wildebeest, zebra, and flamingo. Your private guide knows the territories and reading the signs โ they can often position you before other vehicles arrive.
Can I combine the private safari with Zanzibar?
Yes โ and it is a natural sequence. After the physical intensity of Kilimanjaro and the early starts of a safari, Zanzibar is the recovery destination. A private safari in the Serengeti followed by 4-5 days on Zanzibar's beaches is a complete trip: summit, wildlife, beach. We price these as a combined package and the logistics are straightforward: light aircraft from the Serengeti to Zanzibar (1.5 hours) with a short stop in Arusha.
What level of comfort can I expect on a private safari?
For a private safari after Kilimanjaro, we typically pair exclusive tented camps or small luxury lodges with the safari itinerary. These are not budget tented affairs โ think en-suite tents with proper beds, gourmet dining under the stars, and camp staff dedicated to your comfort. In the Serengeti, camps like Lemala or Kubu Kubu offer this level. In the crater, Entamanu or Wilderness Usawa provide genuine luxury with extraordinary crater views. The price reflects this: $364-600 per person per night for the safari accommodation on top of the vehicle and guide costs.
