The Price Question

Why some operators charge half our price

After publishing our Kilimanjaro + Safari combo pricing โ€” from $3,952 per person for a 10-day private package โ€” we regularly receive questions about operators advertising similar combos for $1,404โ€“$2,808. The honest answer: these are two different products, and the price difference reflects that.

The cheaper operators are offering group-joining packages. You share a Land Cruiser with up to 7 other travellers, follow a fixed departure schedule, and are assigned a guide from their seasonal pool. The itinerary cannot be changed mid-trip. You travel with strangers whose expectations may not match yours.

Our pricing is for private groups โ€” your own vehicle, your own guide, your own schedule. After the physical demands of climbing Kilimanjaro, most of our clients want exactly this: no compromises, no waiting for strangers, no fixed schedule that doesn't account for the exceptional sighting that appeared out of nowhere.

Neither model is wrong. But they're not the same. And we think you deserve to understand the difference before you book.

What You Actually Get

What "private" means on your Safari Kilimanjaro combo

Private vs Group Kili Safari | Which Is Better?

After summit day, your dedicated Land Cruiser is waiting at the mountain. No sharing with strangers, no waiting while other groups load. Your vehicle, your schedule.

Private vs Group Kili Safari | Which Is Better?

Your safari guide meets you on descent day. By the time you reach the Serengeti, they understand what you want from the experience โ€” longer at big cat sightings, more photographic opportunities, earlier mornings, whatever your preference.

Private vs Group Kili Safari | Which Is Better?

Private camps and lodges selected for your trip โ€” not whatever group booking algorithm assigned you. After Kilimanjaro, you deserve a proper bed, hot shower, and food that doesn't taste like emergency rations.

Private vs Group Kili Safari | Which Is Better?

We handle the climb and the safari. The same Arusha-based family company. No hand-offs to a different safari operator you've never heard of. No sub-contracting to a broker. Since 1978.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Why do some Kilimanjaro + Safari operators charge half of what you charge?

Two different products. The operators advertising $1,404โ€“$2,808 per person are offering group-joining packages โ€” you share a Land Cruiser with up to 7 strangers, follow a fixed itinerary, and depart on a set date regardless of your preferences. Our pricing is for private groups of 2+: your own vehicle, your own guide, and complete flexibility. After summiting Kilimanjaro, the last thing most people want is to share a safari vehicle with strangers and follow someone else's schedule.

What exactly does 'private safari' mean?

Private means: a dedicated 4x4 Land Cruiser with your group only (not shared with strangers), a professional guide who works with you throughout the safari (not a different seasonal guide each day), and an itinerary that can be adjusted mid-trip based on wildlife sightings, weather, or your preferences. It does not mean exclusive accommodation โ€” you may share a camp's public areas with other guests, which is normal and social.

Is a private safari worth the price difference after climbing Kilimanjaro?

This depends on what you want from the experience. If you've just spent 7โ€“10 days pushing toward Uhuru Peak, a private safari offers the decompression the trip deserves โ€” no compromises on timing, no rushing past a leopard sighting because seven strangers want to move on, no arguments about when to leave in the morning. Most clients who choose private describe it as the best money they've spent. If budget is the primary constraint, a group safari is still a remarkable experience โ€” just a fundamentally different one.

How many people are in your private combos?

Our standard private combo pricing is based on 2 people travelling together. Single travellers pay a solo supplement. Groups of 4 or more receive a per-person discount because the fixed costs are shared. The private vehicle and dedicated guide are included regardless of group size.

Do you ever sub-contract the safari part of the combo?

Never. The same family company that runs your Kilimanjaro climb runs your safari. We own our vehicles, employ our guides year-round (not seasonally), and manage every component of every itinerary. This is what 'since 1978, zero hand-offs' means in practice. Many operators advertise 'Kilimanjaro + Safari combos' but sub-contract the safari to a third party they've never met. You only find out when you arrive.

What if I fail to summit โ€” do I still get a private safari?

Yes, unconditionally. If you descend early for any reason โ€” altitude sickness, injury, or simply deciding you've had enough โ€” your private safari vehicle and guide are waiting. The safari component is not contingent on summit success. Most clients who turn back from the mountain still have an extraordinary safari. The wildlife of the Serengeti and Ngorongoro is equally profound as an experience.
