The Other Sequence

Do the safari first.
Then earn the summit.

Most people climb Kilimanjaro then do a safari. This is the other way around โ€” and for some travellers, it is the better way.

The Case For Safari First

Why some experienced travellers choose the reverse order

The standard advice is climb first, safari after. The mountain is the challenge; the wildlife is the reward. That narrative makes sense โ€” and for most people, it is the right sequence.

But not everyone follows the standard advice. Some experienced travellers โ€” people who have done multi-week expeditions before, people who think carefully about motivation and momentum โ€” choose to do the safari first. Here is why.

The Case For Safari First

Five reasons the wildlife-first sequence works

๐Ÿฆ

Safari Before Kilimanjaro | Which Order Is Better?

Summit night on Kilimanjaro is dark, cold, and genuinely brutal. The wind cuts through every layer. Your legs are burning. You are above 4,500 metres and every step feels like a decision. In that moment, having something real to come home to matters. When you have already seen lions and leopards and elephants on safari โ€” when you have felt how extraordinary Tanzania is at ground level โ€” the idea of going home without the summit story feels wrong. The safari adds stakes to the climb.

๐Ÿง

Safari Before Kilimanjaro | Which Order Is Better?

A safari teaches you patience, stillness, and attention. You learn to wait. You learn that the best moments come when you stop rushing. These are exactly the mental skills that Kilimanjaro requires โ€” particularly on summit night, when patience is the difference between turning back at 4,500m and reaching the summit at 5,895m. Safari teaches you not to force things.

Safari Before Kilimanjaro | Which Order Is Better?

Arriving in Tanzania for the first time and going directly to the mountain is efficient but intense. Your first views of the country are from a trailhead. Doing the safari first means you arrive at the mountain already comfortable with Arusha, already adjusted to the food, the pace, the heat, the sounds. You are not processing everything at once.

Safari Before Kilimanjaro | Which Order Is Better?

Here is the counter-intuitive truth: the fatigue you feel after a week of safari is actually useful preparation for Kilimanjaro. Not the physical fatigue โ€” the mental adjustment. You have already pushed through early mornings and bumpy roads and long days. By the time you start the climb, you have already been in adventure mode. The transition from luxury lodge to mountain tent feels less jarring.

The safari parks โ€” Tarangire, Lake Manyara, the Ngorongoro Crater โ€” sit at 1,200โ€“2,400 metres above sea level. This is not altitude risk, but it is altitude exposure. Your body begins adjusting to thinner air before you reach the mountain. It is not a substitute for proper acclimatisation on the mountain itself, but every metre of pre-adaptation helps.

Sample Itinerary

How a safari-first 18-day itinerary flows

This is one example. We design every itinerary around your dates, fitness, and preferences.

Days 1โ€“2

Arrival in Arusha

Rest, acclimatise to time zone, meet your guides. This is also when we brief you on both the safari and the climb.

Days 3โ€“7

Northern Circuit Safari

Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater. Active but paced โ€” we design these days for comfortable wildlife viewing, not endurance.

Day 8

Final Safari Day + Arusha Transfer

Morning game drive, then transfer back to Arusha. Check into a comfortable lodge โ€” your last night in a proper bed before the mountain.

Day 9

Arusha Rest Day

This is deliberately quiet. A walk around town, a swim, a long lunch. No agenda. Your body is processing the safari and preparing for the climb.

Days 10โ€“17

Kilimanjaro Climb

Begin the climb on your chosen route. You are rested, adjusted to Tanzania, and motivated by everything you have already experienced in the country.

Day 18+

Recovery + Departure

Arusha recovery night, then transfer to Kilimanjaro Airport or onward travel. If you want to extend the safari after the climb, we can add days here.

Honest Answers

The concerns people raise โ€” and the honest answers

Will I be too tired from the safari to climb?

Not if the itinerary is designed correctly. The key is sequencing: put the most active safari days first, then taper. End the safari with a restful day โ€” ideally at a luxury camp where you barely move. Then transfer to the mountain. By the time you begin the climb, the physical fatigue from safari has largely resolved. The mental readiness from safari, however, stays with you.

Is the safari harder if I am not yet acclimatised to altitude?

No. Safari parks in Tanzania sit between 1,200m and 2,400m โ€” well within the range where altitude has no meaningful effect on healthy adults. The altitude concern on Kilimanjaro begins at 3,000m. Your safari will not affect your ability to acclimatise on the mountain.

Does this sequence cost more logistically?

It can. Safari first means two Arusha stays โ€” one before the safari and one before the climb โ€” rather than one Arusha stay between the climb and safari. We handle all Arusha logistics and build the overnight stays into the itinerary pricing. The difference is usually one additional hotel night, which adds approximately $83โ€“$208 depending on the lodge.

What if the safari takes longer than expected โ€” will I be rushed to start the climb?

We build buffer days into every safari-first itinerary. If a morning game drive runs long, or if you want to spend an extra hour at a sighting, we adjust the schedule โ€” not your climb start date. The mountain booking is fixed; everything before it is flexible.

Does this sequence work for all fitness levels?

Safari first suits most people, but not all. If you are planning a physically demanding route like the Northern Circuit โ€” which is 8โ€“9 days โ€” arriving pre-exhausted from a safari is not ideal. For Machame, Lemosho, or Marangu (5โ€“8 days), the safari-first sequence works well for most fitness levels. We will give you honest guidance during the planning process.

Not Sure Which Sequence?

We will tell you which order suits your trip

The right sequence depends on your fitness, your dates, which route you are climbing, and how long your safari is. Tell us your plans and we will give you honest guidance โ€” including if we think the standard safari-after approach is better for your specific situation.

Safari Before Kili? Ask Kassim

Common Questions

Safari first or safari after โ€” what is right for you?

Is it better to do safari before or after Kilimanjaro?

There is no universally correct answer. Most climbers prefer safari after the climb โ€” they want the wildlife reward after the mountain effort. Safari before the climb is better for those who want to build wildlife appreciation before the challenge, or who are combining a long safari (10+ days) with the climb and want the safari to be the main event. We can discuss which sequence fits your specific trip.

Does safari affect Kilimanjaro summit success?

There is no evidence that a properly-paced safari reduces summit success. Summit success on Kilimanjaro is determined by altitude acclimatisation strategy, physical fitness, and weather โ€” not prior safari activity. The key variable is whether you arrive at the mountain adequately rested, which our itineraries ensure.

How many days should I plan between safari and climb?

We recommend a minimum of one full rest day in Arusha between the last safari activity and the climb start. Two days is better if your safari was particularly active. This rest period allows physical recovery and mental preparation for the mountain.

What if I see a leopard on safari and decide I want more wildlife time after the climb too?

This is the best problem to have. We can always add post-climb safari days to any itinerary. Many clients who start with safari first and then climb decide they want a third or fourth wildlife day once they have tasted both. Tell us during the trip and we will make it happen.
