7-Day Kilimanjaro + Safari โ€” Machame Route Combo

The 7-day Machame route + Ngorongoro Crater safari is our most compressed โ€” and most popular โ€” option for travellers with limited annual leave. Six days on the mountain with proper acclimatisation stops, followed by one full day in Ngorongoro Crater, the world's most wildlife-dense volcanic caldera.

Why the 7-Day Machame Route?

The Machame Route offers the best balance of scenery, summit success rate, and value among Kilimanjaro's seven routes. At 6 days (the minimum viable duration), Machame still delivers a proper acclimatisation profile โ€” the Lava Tower day on Day 3 is the critical 'climb high, sleep low' opportunity that makes the difference between summiting and turning back.

Unlike Marangu (hut-only, faster ascent, lower success rate), Machame uses quality tents and follows a scenic southern circuit. Unlike Rongai (dry-season only, adds transfer time), Machame is accessible year-round and deposits you close to Arusha for the safari leg.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 7 days enough for a Kilimanjaro climb and a safari?

Seven days is the most compressed combo we offer. You get a 6-day Machame climb and one full Ngorongoro Crater safari day. The Machame route at 6 days is faster than the ideal 7-day profile โ€” summit success rates are approximately 80โ€“85% for fit hikers versus 90%+ on the 7-day version. If you have any flexibility in your dates, we strongly recommend the 10-day minimum: it gives your body proper time to acclimatise on the mountain and allows a more relaxed safari.

Why Machame and not Marangu for a short trip?

The Machame route has a significantly higher summit success rate than Marangu (85% versus 65%) because the ascent profile allows better acclimatisation. On a tight 7-day timeline, you need every advantage โ€” Machame's 'climb high, sleep low' profile at Lava Tower on Day 3 is your key acclimatisation opportunity. Marangu's continuous ascent without proper height variation makes altitude sickness more likely. We do not recommend Rongai for combo trips โ€” the northern approach adds transfer time that cuts into your safari days.

What does a typical 7-day itinerary look like?

Day 1: Arusha to Machame Gate, climb to Machame Camp (1,840m). Days 2โ€“3: Machame Camp to Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower โ€” the critical acclimatisation day. Day 4: Barranco Wall scramble to Karanga Camp. Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,673m). Day 6: Summit at Uhuru Peak (5,895m) then descend to Mweaki Camp. Day 7: Mweaki to Arusha, drive to Ngorongoro Crater for a full game drive, return to Arusha in the evening.

Why does the safari only cover Ngorongoro Crater?

Time. The drive from Kilimanjaro base to the Serengeti takes 6โ€“7 hours each way. On a 7-day itinerary, you do not have those hours. Ngorongoro Crater delivers the highest wildlife density per square kilometre of any park in Tanzania โ€” the Big Five can all be seen in a single game drive. It is the most time-efficient safari option when combined with a tight mountain itinerary.

What is included in the 7-day package price?

All park fees for both the mountain and Ngorongoro Crater, certified mountain guides and porters, all camping accommodation and meals on the mountain, one night lodge in Arusha, private Land Cruiser safari vehicle, park entry fees for Ngorongoro, and all ground transfers between Arusha, the mountain, and the crater. Not included: international flights, Tanzania visa (USD 52 at JRO), travel insurance (mandatory), crew tips (USD 208โ€“250 per person), and personal gear.
