The Kili Safari Combo — Day by Day
From Arusha to Uhuru Peak to the Serengeti — what actually happens on each day of the trip.
This is the 7-day Machame route + 4-day safari version of the Kili+safari combo — the most popular itinerary for people combining the climb and safari. Longer routes (Lemosho, Northern Circuit) add days before the summit; shorter safaris remove a day here and there. But the arc is the same: arrive, climb, summit, descend, rest, safari, fly home.
The day-by-day structure below reflects what you actually do at each stage — not the marketing version, but the real experience of each morning, afternoon, and evening.

Frequently Asked Questions
What day do you summit Kilimanjaro on the combo?
On the 7-day Machame route combo, summit day is day 6 — you wake at midnight and begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) around 1am, reaching the summit at dawn. On longer routes (Lemosho, Northern Circuit), summit day falls on day 7 or 8. The safari starts on day 8 (7-day combo) or day 9-10 (longer combos).
What happens on summit night?
Summit night is the most challenging 12 hours of the trip. You wake at midnight, eat a light snack, and begin the final ascent at 1am. You walk for 5-7 hours in the dark, using headlamps, to reach Uhuru Peak at sunrise. The temperature is -15C to -20C with wind chill. After 30-60 minutes on the summit (photographs, the certificate), you begin the 3-4 hour descent to base camp, followed by a further descent to the lower camp. Total time on your feet: 12-14 hours.
How tired will I be after the climb?
Very tired on day 7 (immediate post-descent day). By day 8 (safari day 1), most climbers feel approximately 80% recovered. The rest day in Arusha helps significantly. By the first game drive on day 8 afternoon, the tiredness is noticeable but manageable. By day 9-10, most people feel essentially normal. The safari is physically easy compared to the climb — you sit in a vehicle.
What time do I arrive at the safari on day 8?
On the 7-day combo, you leave Arusha after breakfast on day 8 and drive to the Serengeti or Ngorongoro. You arrive at your camp in time for lunch, rest during the heat of the day, and do an afternoon game drive from approximately 3:30pm to 6pm or sunset. The first wildlife sighting of the safari is usually on this afternoon drive.
What is the safari day rhythm?
The safari day is: wake at 5:30-6am, depart at 6am for a 4-5 hour morning game drive, return to camp by 10-11am. Lunch and rest from 11am to 3pm. Afternoon game drive from 3:30pm to 6:30pm or sunset. Dinner at 7:30-8pm. Bed early. This rhythm is consistent across all safari days, with variation in the distance driven and wildlife encountered.
Can I customize the day-by-day itinerary?
Yes — the itinerary described here is the standard 7-day Machame + safari combo. We can extend the climb (Lemosho 8-9 days, Northern Circuit 10+ days) before the safari, or extend the safari (add Ngorongoro, Tarangire, or a Zanzibar beach extension). The rest day between mountain and safari is fixed — your body needs it regardless of itinerary.
What if I don't make the summit?
The safari still happens. If you turn back before the summit (due to altitude illness, injury, or exhaustion), you descend to a lower camp, rest, and return to Arusha the following day. The safari portion of the trip is entirely independent of whether you summited. Our guides are experienced in managing this situation and ensuring you still have a meaningful experience even if the summit is not reached.
Is the day-by-day itinerary the same for different routes?
The safari days (8-12 or similar) are the same regardless of which Kili route you climbed. The ascent days differ by route: Machame has steeper terrain and higher camp elevations than Lemosho; the Northern Circuit has a longer approach and more remote camps. But the summit day structure is the same across all routes: midnight start, pre-dawn ascent, sunrise at the summit, long descent.
