After the physical demands of Kilimanjaro, the safari that follows should feel like a reward. Not just in the obvious sense — wildlife, comfort, hot showers — but in the deeper sense of immersion in something vast and unhurried. Southern Tanzania delivers that in a way the northern parks, for all their wonders, increasingly cannot.
The southern circuit — Ruaha National Park, Nyerere National Park, and Mikumi National Park — covers a combined area larger than Belgium. It receives a fraction of the visitors that crowd the Serengeti and Ngorongoro. The roads are rougher, the camps fewer, the wildlife just as abundant. For travellers who have done the iconic northern circuit or who want something genuinely remote, this is where Tanzania still feels like the Africa of the imagination.
Why Go South After Kilimanjaro
The transition from mountain to safari is one of the most dramatic in travel. You go from the thin, cold air above 4,500 metres to the warm, animal-rich lowlands of the Rufiji River basin. The altitude symptoms — lingering fatigue, slight breathlessness — clear faster in the warm lowland air. Most clients report feeling physically recovered within a day or two at a southern Tanzania camp.
The practical case is equally strong. Internal charter flights from Kilimanjaro Airport or Arusha to the southern airstrips take 1-2 hours. You can be on the ground in Ruaha or Nyerere the same afternoon you descend from the mountain. There is no backtracking, no long drive, no re-entry into Arusha except to collect bags. One operator — us — handles the entire transition.
The wildlife case is the strongest of all. Southern Tanzania has the largest elephant population in East Africa, healthy populations of wild dog, cheetah, and hyena, and one of the last genuinely remote wilderness experiences in Africa. No minibuses, no crowding at predator kills, no queues at the crater gate.
Ruaha National Park — East Africa's Largest
At 22,000 square kilometres, Ruaha is the largest national park in East Africa. It spans a dramatic range of ecosystems — from rolling savanna and rocky outcrops to riverine forest and open plains. The Great Ruaha River runs along its eastern edge, attracting concentrations of wildlife during the dry season that rival anything in the Serengeti.
The park is famous for its elephants — an estimated 15,000-20,000 individuals, among the largest populations in Africa. Herds of 200+ elephants crossing the river are a regular sight. The lion population is dense, and Ruaha is considered one of the best places in Africa for leopard sightings. Wild dog denning packs are seen regularly, something increasingly rare elsewhere.
What Ruaha does not have is crowds. In peak season, you might see two or three other vehicles in a full day of game drives. At camp, the silence is absolute — no roads within earshot, no generator hum, just the sounds of the bush.
Kili + Ruaha: What to expect
A typical Kili + Ruaha itinerary: descend from summit on day 7-9 (depending on route), fly to Ruaha the next day, spend 3-4 days on game drives, then fly home or onward. Total trip: 12-16 days. Ruaha fly-camp option available for experienced travellers wanting maximum wilderness immersion.
Nyerere National Park — The Rufiji Wild
Nyerere (formerly part of Selous Game Reserve) is the largest national park in Africa — 50,000 square kilometres of pristine wilderness that dwarfs the Serengeti. The Rufiji River, Tanzania's largest river, cuts through it with a network of channels, lagoons, and sandbanks that create one of the most varied wildlife habitats on the continent.
The park is one of the few places in Africa where you can do walking safaris with armed guides, boat safaris along the Rufiji, and traditional game drives in a single day. This variety — the diversity of how you experience the wildlife — is what makes Nyerere unlike any other park in Tanzania.
Wildlife highlights include large buffalo herds, hippo pods of 100+ individuals, Nile crocodiles basking on sandbanks, and excellent wild dog sightings. The birdlife along the Rufiji is exceptional — over 440 species recorded. For photographers, the riverine environment creates extraordinary golden hour light.
Nyerere is accessed primarily by light aircraft. The main airstrips are Siwandu, Samo, and Mbuya. From Arusha or Kilimanjaro, the flight is approximately 1.5-2 hours with a brief refuelling stop.
Mikumi National Park — The Accessible Southern Gem
Mikumi is the most accessible of the southern parks — just a 4-hour drive from Dar es Salaam or a 45-minute flight from Kilimanjaro with a connection. At 3,230 square kilometres, it is smaller than Ruaha and Nyerere but punches well above its weight for wildlife density.
Mikumi borders the Selous (now Nyerere) and together they form one of the largest protected wilderness areas in Africa. The park is known for its large buffalo herds — often 500+ at a time — and elephant populations that have recovered strongly from past poaching. Lions are common, and Mikumi has one of the highest hyena densities of any park. It is also one of the best places in Tanzania to see the rare African wild dog.
For Kilimanjaro climbers flying home from Dar es Salaam rather than JRO, Mikumi is a natural add-on — it is en route to Dar, and a 2-3 day safari here adds minimal extra logistics. The park's proximity to the main highway also makes it more affordable than the more remote southern parks.
Southern Circuit vs Northern Circuit — Which Should You Choose
This is the wrong question for first-time Tanzania travellers. The northern circuit — Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater in particular — delivers iconic experiences that are genuinely irreplaceable: the Migration, the Crater floor, the density of wildlife in a concentrated area. If you have never been to Tanzania, start north.
The southern circuit is the right answer for: travellers who have done northern Tanzania before and want something different; those who want genuine remoteness and do not mind rougher logistics; photographers who want golden-hour landscapes without five other vehicles in the frame; and anyone drawn to the idea of a park that feels genuinely undiscovered.
Combining both circuits in one trip is possible for travellers with 18+ days. The usual approach: Kilimanjaro climb, 3-4 days northern circuit (Serengeti or Ngorongoro), then fly south to Ruaha or Nyerere for 3-4 days before flying home. The total trip runs 18-21 days.
Getting From Kilimanjaro to Southern Tanzania
The most common route is a charter flight from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport to Msembke Airstrip (Ruaha) or Siwandu (Nyerere). These flights are booked through your operator and are typically scheduled to depart the morning after your descent. Flight time is 1-2 hours depending on routing.
The drive option is available but long: 8-10 hours from Arusha to Ruaha on good roads, longer on rough tracks. We recommend the flight for comfort and time efficiency, particularly after the physical demands of the climb.
From Dar es Salaam, Mikumi is a 4-hour drive on the surfaced Iringa highway — making it the most practical southern park for travellers departing from Dar. Charter flights from Dar to Mikumi take 45 minutes.
Safari Kit After Kilimanjaro — What You Need
The good news: safari requires far less gear than Kilimanjaro. You do not need technical layers, crampons, or a down suit. The basic safari kit you need is: neutral-coloured clothing (bush colours: khaki, olive, brown — no bright colours or white), a light rain jacket (southern Tanzania can get rain year-round), sturdy closed shoes or boots for walking safaris, a sun hat, high SPF sunscreen, binoculars (seriously — bring these, wildlife is often at distance), and a camera with reasonable zoom.
Your safari operator provides: vehicle, guide, all park fees, meals, and accommodation. You do not need to bring anything special for southern Tanzania compared to northern — the kit list is the same.
One thing to note: southern Tanzania camps are more remote than northern lodges. Power is often solar or generator-limited; some camps have limited or no cell signal. This is part of the appeal. Let your family know you will be off-grid for a few days.
Combining Southern Tanzania With Other Destinations
Ruaha + Northern Tanzania: Fly from Ruaha back to the northern circuit (Serengeti or Ngorongoro) in 1.5 hours. This combination works well for 16-18 day trips.
Ruaha + Zanzibar: The classic end to a Tanzania trip. Fly from Ruaha to Zanzibar (via Dar or direct, depending on charter routing) in about 3 hours total. Beach recovery after mountain + safari is a combination that never disappoints.
Kilimanjaro + Ruaha + Rwanda Gorillas: For the ultimate East Africa trilogy: climb Kili, fly south to Ruaha for 3-4 days, then fly to Kigali (via Dar) for gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park. This requires 20-24 days and is suited to travellers in excellent physical condition.
