Why the 10-Day Kilimanjaro Safari Combo Is Our Most Popular Package
Year after year, the 10-day Machame + Northern Circuit tops our booking charts. Here is the honest reasoning โ and whether it belongs in your plan.
Since we started offering the Kili + Safari combo in 2009, one itinerary has outsold every other, every single year: the 10-day Machame Route + Northern Circuit. Not the cheapest, not the longest โ just the right balance of challenge, reward, and time commitment for most travellers.
If you are researching which combo to book, this is the honest account of why so many people land on the 10-day, who it suits best, and who should consider something different.

Why the 10-Day Works Better Than Shorter Combos
The most common mistake first-time Kili climbers make is choosing too short a route to "save time." The Rongai route (5-6 days) and Marangu (5-6 days) have meaningfully lower summit success rates โ typically 60-70% versus 85%+ on Machame 7-day โ precisely because they gain altitude too quickly for most bodies to acclimatise.
The 10-day uses Machame specifically because its 7-day itinerary builds in the "climb high, sleep low" pattern that triggers proper acclimatisation. By Day 4 at Lava Tower (4,630m), your body has been at altitude long enough to adapt. This is why Machame consistently produces the highest success rates of any non-technical route on Kilimanjaro.
The safari portion โ Tarangire and Ngorongoro โ is calibrated to give you 2 full days after the mountain. This is not rushed: Tarangire is a 2-hour drive from Arusha, meaning you arrive in good time on Day 9. Ngorongoro is a further 2 hours and is done as a full-day descent on Day 10 before airport transfer.
Who the 10-Day Is Right For
First-time climbers with a moderate fitness level (you do not need to be an athlete)
People with 10-12 days of available holiday (including travel days)
Those who want the best summit success rate without adding extra mountain days
Travellers who prefer game drives to technical scrambling (Machame is non-technical)
Couples, friends, or solo travellers where one person is a hiker and the other primarily wants the safari
Anyone combining Kilimanjaro with a broader Tanzania trip โ the 10-day slots neatly into a 2-week leave
Who Should Consider a Different Combo
The 10-day is not always the answer. Here is when to look elsewhere:
- โ
14+ days available: The 14-day Lemosho + Serengeti is a materially better safari experience โ you spend 4 days in the Serengeti instead of 1, and you have a full rest day in Arusha between climb and safari. Worth it if you can stretch the time.
- โ
Under 8 days total: If you have fewer than 8 days, do not force the combo. A standalone safari (5-7 days) or a standalone Kilimanjaro climb (5-7 days) beats a rushed half-measure of both.
- โ
Only interested in the safari: If you are primarily a safari person who is considering Kili "because it is there," spend those extra mountain days on a proper Southern Circuit safari instead (Ruaha, Selous, Mahale). The 10-day combo is for people genuinely motivated to summit.
- โ
Serious altitude risk: If you have a history of AMS (acute mountain sickness) or a cardiac condition, consult our medical team before booking any Kili itinerary. The 14-day Lemosho with its extra acclimatisation day may be more appropriate.
What Happens After the Summit on the 10-Day
Summit night on Machame is extraordinary โ midnight departure, 4am at Stella Point, sunrise on Uhuru Peak, then a full descent to Mweka Camp. By the time you reach Mweka, you have been moving for 12-16 hours.
Day 9 starts with a short descent to Mweka Gate, then a transfer back to Arusha. You will feel the summit in your legs, your lungs, and possibly your head (mild altitude after-effects are normal and resolve within 24-48 hours). The rest day in Arusha is exactly what the body needs: a real bed, a hot meal, and time before the safari vehicle picks you up on Day 10 morning.
The safari on Days 10-11 is deliberately paced. Tarangire is a relaxed full-day drive โ the vehicle is comfortable, the distances are short, and the wildlife is dense. Ngorongoro Crater is more active โ an early start, a full descent, and a packed morning of sightings before you surface for lunch and the airport transfer.
