The Remote Tanzania Extension
Chimpanzee Trekking After Kilimanjaro
The summit was the mountain. Now add the forest. Gombe Stream and Mahale Mountains — Africa’s most intimate primate encounters, after Africa’s highest peak.
From the Summit to the Forest
You reached the roof of Africa. Now consider what comes after the descent — not another wildlife drive, not another national park, but an entirely different Tanzania. Gombe Stream and Mahale Mountains, on the cobalt shores of Lake Tanganyika, are home to habituated chimpanzee troops that have been studied for decades. Sitting with them in their forest — watching a mother groom her infant, a juvenile play with a stick, a silverback rest in the shade — is one of the most quietly profound wildlife encounters available anywhere on the continent.
For Kilimanjaro climbers, the combination works exceptionally well. You have already spent a week in Tanzania. You understand what effort means, what the landscape asks of you. The chimpanzee trek — a few hours in the forest, at altitude well below what you have already acclimatised to — feels less like an exertion and more like a privilege. The two experiences, summit and forest, are different enough to feel like separate journeys yet connected enough to form a coherent arc.
Tanzania’s chimpanzee destinations are remote. That is part of their power. Gombe is a two-hour wooden boat ride from the lakeside town of Kigoma. Mahale is accessible only by light aircraft and then by boat. Neither is easy to reach. Both are extraordinary.
Why Add Chimpanzee Trekking After Your Climb?
Chimpanzee Trekking After Kili | Mahale Mountains
After the savanna plains of a typical safari and the high-altitude environment of Kilimanjaro, the forest of Lake Tanganyika is a completely different landscape. It is the third Tanzania.
Chimpanzee Trekking After Kili | Mahale Mountains
You have worked for your wildlife encounters on Kilimanjaro. Sitting with wild chimpanzees — having descended from 5,895 metres to a lowland forest — feels like the natural completion of that journey.
Chimpanzee Trekking After Kili | Mahale Mountains
Gombe and Mahale are at 800-1,500 metres elevation. After acclimatising on Kilimanjaro, this altitude feels trivial. Your fitness from the climb transfers directly to the forest trekking.
Chimpanzee Trekking After Kili | Mahale Mountains
Fewer visitors reach these parks than virtually any other wildlife destination in Tanzania. The combination with a Kilimanjaro climb means you have already committed to adventure — now go all the way.
Chimpanzee Trekking After Kili | Mahale Mountains
Mahale and Gombe are in Tanzania’s southwest, near Ruaha and Katavi. The classic extension is Ruaha (or Katavi) followed by Mahale — two of Africa’s most unvisited major parks in sequence.

Bobby Tours handles the full itinerary — Kilimanjaro, safari, and chimp trek — as a continuous programme. No hand-offs, no rebooking, no new briefing for a new operator.
Gombe Stream vs Mahale Mountains
Eastern Shore, Lake Tanganyika
Gombe Stream National Park
Tanzania’s smallest national park at 52 km². Reachable by a 2-hour wooden boat ride from Kigoma. No roads, no vehicles — only forest and lake. Fully habituated chimpanzee troops including the Mitumba troop studied by Jane Goodall since 1960.
Western Shore, Lake Tanganyika
Mahale Mountains National Park
1,613 km² of forested mountains rising from Lake Tanganyika. More remote, more demanding, more dramatic. Trek to find the ~800-member chimpanzees can take several hours. The setting — steep forested slopes above a turquoise lake — is unmatched in Africa.
After a Kilimanjaro climb, most climbers find Gombe the more relaxing option. If you have energy to spare and want the full adventure, Mahale is one of Africa’s great wilderness experiences.
Itinerary Logic
How to Combine With Your Kili Climb
Option 1: Southern Circuit + Mahale
+7-8 daysKilimanjaro (7 days) → Rest Arusha (1 night) → Fly to Ruaha or Katavi (4-5 days, Southern Circuit) → Fly/boat to Mahale (2-3 days including trekking). This is the most coherent remote Tanzania itinerary — three very different parks, each progressively more wild.
Option 2: Northern Circuit + Gombe
+6-8 daysKilimanjaro (7 days) → Northern Circuit safari — Serengeti and Ngorongoro (4-5 days) → Fly via Dar es Salaam to Kigoma → Gombe (2-3 days). This gives you the iconic Northern Circuit plus the chimp trek — the classic Tanzania combination with a primate twist.
Option 3: Chimp trek only after Kili
+3 daysIf time is short, Gombe alone can be reached from Arusha via a flight to Kigoma. A 3-day Gombe extension — 1 travel day, 2 trekking days — is manageable even within a 10-day total itinerary. This is the minimum addition; anything shorter does not do justice to the experience.
Practical Information
Chimpanzee Trekking After Kili | Mahale Mountains
Chimpanzee trekking permits are issued by TAWIRI (Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute). Permits at both Gombe and Mahale are limited — we recommend booking at least 6-8 weeks in advance, and earlier during peak season (June-October). The permit is the main cost component; your tour operator handles the booking process.
Chimpanzee Trekking After Kili | Mahale Mountains
Most Kilimanjaro climbers find Gombe trekking straightforward — the terrain is similar to the lower sections of the mountain, without the altitude. Mahale is more demanding due to steep, forested slopes. We recommend at least 2 full rest days after your summit descent before the chimp trek. This also gives your body time to recalibrate to low altitude after the mountain.
Chimpanzee Trekking After Kili | Mahale Mountains
Lightweight hiking boots with good grip on wet terrain. Long trousers and a long-sleeve shirt for the forest — there are mosquitoes and other insects in the forest. Rain gear (both parks receive significant rainfall, particularly during the green season). Binoculars for birdwatching — both parks have exceptional avifauna, including the stunning livingstone’s flycatcher.
Chimpanzee Trekking After Kili | Mahale Mountains
Adding chimpanzee trekking to a Kilimanjaro and safari itinerary adds approximately $624-1,400 per person depending on which park, how many days, and whether combined with the Southern Circuit. Internal flights between Ruaha/Katavi and Mahale are the biggest single cost. We design the itinerary to minimise internal flight segments while maximising the experience.
